In this video, I talk about learning for fun and hobby learners and why learning in your free time (like learning during the summer) might be super beneficial for you.
John needs a Ted Talk. Prove me wrong. You can't.
Agree
Couldn't agree more.
What even is this comment lol
VixXstazosJOB a Ted talk is basically someone giving a “speech” of sorts to inspire or teach people.
@@maggieeidel1237 - TED, TEDDY... ugh -
Dammit ... i don't wanna relate something really important in Life to a stupid stuffed doll
John Fish. You're such a huge inspiration to me, for years now. Last November, watching one of your videos, I decided to try a 2months long break from social media (including youtube - except useful channels) + television... I made it and instead started learning coding and reading a lot. Since then I've been much more productive and somehow, your videos started this. Next May I'm applying for software engineering and I wouldn't do it nor believe in myself without you being truly helpful. Sorry for being too sentimental but I really think your videos help lots of people 💙 Also sorry if I made some grammar mistakes, I'm from Slovakia so... ✌
fighting!i am a chinese student, and maybe i should really learn for fun and calm down to think about my life , i like your comment !加油!
Love story like this
@@user-cs9ty4cd8z You should, you can learn another language :) Btw, does your last sentence read zai jen or goodbye? My Mandarin is rusty, didn't practice for a few months...

John, I will put it simply.. I am in a desperate need for your constant advice.
You from India?
@@rupayan6309 yes I am
@@RajendraKumar-ni2xf me too
You’re so right...this entire time I’ve been studying and I’ve been viewing it somewhat negatively and thus I don’t get as much outcome out of it
That's so true. I've just graduated from college last week and realized that there wasn't much to everything.
learning is a lifetime pursuit, might aw well enjoy it
@@MsVynix so true
i don’t think you know it, but your videos are so important to so many people. you literally give the best advice and i’m so grateful for you! keep inspiring others ✨
She is right
Ditto!
me: how productive and time efficient are you?
John Fish: *yes*
John Fish reminds me of Cal Newport.
A Brilliant sponsorship with this video would’ve gone so damn well.
so much truth in one comment!
It would have gone so well that it would have made look the whole video as an ad
I totally agree.
Stax what is Brilliant?
Stax jeez I did. But it’s always helpful to understand a website from other people instead of just looking it up and not really understanding what it is. Anyways, yeah I did.
I was in grade 12 last year and I was seeing learning as a necessary task to get through school. I'm now in college and I truly believe in learning for fun. Being motivated and enthusiastic about learning has tremendously changed the way I perceive it. I feel empowered with the opportunity to learn any subject I want and it's making feel very happy.
5:53-7:43 he makes his best point. If you put full consideration and consistency into leading your favorite subject daily, It’ll become beneficial and help you on later in life with your job. Even just by putting in 10-30 minutes everyday, you can learn something new.
As a homeschooler who’s developed a love of learning, I want to say that this video was really amazing! Learning is beautiful and really fun, and so thanks for inspiring me to remember to learn for fun more often!
4:57 Did anyone else catch that "wee" flying around ahaha
Helen G. What do you mean?
Hanna Stocks there was a small text that flew behind John in the background lol
doing school is a responsibility you can hate it or enjoy it (still struggling and improving)
we are made to avoid danger and things we hate sometimes your goals are what you hate
wich you dont have to
Totally agree, and I have been tutoring for almost 10 years.
idk why this motivated the shit OUT OF ME !!!!
When I see this guy talking, I feel as if I'm talking to myself. You're such an inspiration John. Thank you for being who you are!
You've such a clarity of the ideas you present, really thought provoking.👍
you're also one of those people who you can talk to about literally anything and that's really rare and awesome. keep doin' what you're doin'!
dude, John Fish you are the best CZcamsr ever. You have inspired me greatly. Although I am only going into highschool your videos still affect me. Thank you so much for posting.
I can physically feel Your creativity. And this video is so full of these moments.
This is what I need to be motivated. I feel like I have unlimited motivation after watching this. Kudos!
Thanks to you, I’ve been able to commit more time to my channel, while also focusing on school.
When I get stuck and feel a lack of motivation, John's videos always inspire me a lot.
I enjoyed college this year and it was so nice, so now I do a lot more stuff and I feel better and more productive.
been waiting for this new video! glad your getting back John! keep up the great work, love the content.
This is so inspiring. I've always been a curious person and although school makes learning exhausting at times, I feel the same way as you. I've always thought it was kind of sad that people learn or shove massive amounts on information into our brains just because we have to do it to get a job or be successful. I find it sad that we can no longer enjoy learning and studying just because there are topics and subjects out there that are so interesting to learn about. It makes me sad that some people in uni are studying things they don't even want to learn just because they feel like they need to study something or their parents pressured them to do it. I honestly hope that one day, people will view learning in the same way that you do. Thanks for the video ♥️♥️
People like you help people like us to reflect on the things we do in our daily lives. Never have I ever been motivated like this from any other video out there. I can relate to you so much and as a full time student your videos allow me to be clear about my future and my goals. Thank you for making these kind of videos!
john, you are one of those people who can make others really excited about life (such as myself) and learn and do things with heart and positivity. i love your advice and im so glad i subscribed. because of you, i began to use Brilliant and practice harder on my sats (which i scored really well on). thank you for everything :)
Evoke curiosity, ask what's holding me back from learning,be consistent and patient in what u r doing- golden ideas worth spreading thanks a lot Johnny Fish!!!
Thank you so much. I would probably actually drop out if I hasn’t stumbled upon your videos. You’ve changed my thinking about school and learning. Thank you so much!
You had given me inspiration through doing anything for Fun to be more optimistic day by day. Thanks a lot
From VietNam
You're inspiring in how you perceive and approach the world... At your core, you're optimistic, which drives your motivation whereas it's so easy for me to fall off the rails and feel overwhelmed and discouraged. Watching your videos really do remind me that life doesn't have to be bleak.
this was so INSPIRING TO ME. your content is GOLD my friend! THANK YOU FOR THE MOTIVATION.
For some reason, I am here watching (listening).
Mile and miles for away (doesn't metter where I am on the globe)
Just one click it is enough to making a true invaluable connection.
Connecting strong minds, thoughts, expirences.
I love the simple breakdown here and your ideas on learning. I have been trying to read more and have been really successful this year. I am at 15 and that is more than I have read in the past several years... This idea really works!!
I have subscribed on several channels on youtube with one and only object = to enhance my english skills through watching native speakers .
But I should say that I'm learning more than that ... you are inspiring me ! thank you ! Keep up the good work .
It's always meaningful to hear a advice from a guy from Harvard.
Another great video of John Fish who's such a huge inspiration to me as I started following his channel last year. For instance, I feel tremendously excited learning English for fun changing the journey of my preparing the IELTS exams in daily life. I honestly believe that commitments and consistencies are the key to be a successful person. Again, Thank John.
I like that idea about consistency. I've been learning English for the past 4 years. I never missed a day since then. Right now English is my major in the Uni, I have a job that requires a decent level of English fluency. I've read and watched so much content that is not available in my native language, I've met so many people, I've done so much. My life has changed. Everything it took was at least 15 minutes a day.
You've got me on as a sub when you mentioned good will hunting and show "my boy wicked smart" scene, I think that is one of my all time favourites movies exactly because of the self taught topic.
You are amazing ! I do study in summer for myself, but I can’t stop feeling that I won’t have enough time to relax before the next year. You’ve changed my point of view. I’ve never told myself that study could be fun..Thanks for the inspiration! I am a medical student from Russia, Kazan
Totally agree with you. I remember 1 year ago I started learning English. I used to have a very small vocabulary and poor grammar. But now I'm preparing for TOEFL exam. Your videos are really helpful tysm!
Thank you so much John Fish! This is just what I needed to hear at the right time.
Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I have problems with stress, anxiety, and also if I just open a book or think about studying, I will start overthinking, I can't focus, I will start stressing, shaking, getting headaches, like just ... STRESSING. But this video helped me a lot. Thank you thank you THANK YOU for making this. I am going through a hard time in my life and I still have to study no matter what, and this helped me. Nice work, dude 💓😄
Jhonn!! ahhhhh Im from Israel and I've been watching your videos for a year now. You are such an inspiration to me!! Because of you, I managed to get my life together, study much more productivily and start coding without being afraid ! Also I became happier person and calm. Keep going with this holly work!
*sorry for my english
Finding a little bit of time each day to read really makes a difference. This works well for language learning too. I'm chipping my way through Tolstoy's War and Peace in Russian that way. I mostly read it on the metro when I go to work.
You're so inspiring John!
I love how motivational you are
SUCH an inspirational video! Reading and learning for fun is the best part of my day, every day.
78 books :O wow. truly inspiring
It means reading books is one of John's top priorities.
I don't how , but I don't think it's a coincidence that I was constantly about this topic and now this my summer holidays so this video came to me in the perfect timing , Thank you so much
You're so inspiring. Thanks to you, I've started to improve as a person and I'm focusing on things that really make me happy. Greetings from Poland ♥
My God, you are so young and truly so wise. That's amazing.
Best video on CZcams right here. Good luck with the next couple years John👍
Awesome video John!!! Keep up the good work. I am an avid follower of your full-on content video. You keep inspiring me. Thank you man!!!
4:47 It would be wonderful if you could make a video about why college is worth it :)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about this amazing topic John. I think we need to learn how to use the internet out of a lot of entertainment and do it a favor to our brain by learning more that being distracted
Amazing! I am learning new language just for fun also math and quantum physics and reading books about biology just for the fascination it brings. Highly recommend having such a "hobby" 😊
I’ve been learning for fun through CZcams for 6 of the 15 years of my life. There is just SO much educational content on this. It’s actually absurd. What’s also crazy is how easy it was to learn here. Only a small percentage of the educational videos I’ve seen have been boring, which allows me to just inhale them. Not to mention the CZcams algorithm that can keep the cycle of learning going for hours a day. The internet is so underrated when it comes to learning and education.
I’m even shocked at times by how much I know. What happens a lot in conversation is that a nerdy topic is brought up, and I’ve got basically talk down to the other person. It’s just all so crazy. I think I need to donate my both my kidneys to youtube as a thank you.
This video just improved my perspective in live! Thankyouuu
You're killing it John!
My inspiration now come out. I need to learn English so well that i can listen to you and your brilliant ideas.
Learning for fun in school would have completely changed my collegiate experience. Unfortunately the motivation was to get a post grad job locked down 🤷♂️
Well it’s hard to enjoy many “fun” things in life when you’re stressed up and struggling
One of the best videos from you so far. Thank you
This is one of your best videos yet John, superb stuff!
So glad I found your channel.
People: complaining that they have not enough free time.
John Fish : 4:57 ... lets put a "wee" text over that fly xD
LOL
Cheers to u man to find that out.. Lol
You’re an inspiration for all of us
Keep doing this..
I think you missed something: motivation. A lot of people struggle outside of a structured environment given how overwhelming the amount of information out there is. Personally, I've self studied a lot of things, learnt to 'learn for fun' and it has helped me approach everything differently but I would've been more productive if somebody had planned it all out for me and told me what to do instead of me having to hunt down information and draw conclusions and comparisons on my own. Otherwise, spot on!
Another thing he doesn't mention is the curation of availible knowledge. Sure, you could learn everything that you learn in a college course online; but finding the right material, and getting feedback on your work, is very difficult to do online
Sounds like you've improved your researching skills greatly, ain't that worth something?
It's worth something, but if you're looking to learn something specific it can be an unnecessary waste of time. Although if you're a US resident and have to pay for college that "waste of time" might be worth it
Zig Ziglar recommended a dose of motivation a day
remove all distractions from ur life and find something u truly love to do that will help others and u'll be truly motivated to learn that thing
Wow John you are absolutely right. I'm gonna start my first year engineering and I decided to learn coding in spite of having mechanical engineering as my branch. I was a bit confused whether I should continue with my learning as I thought that it'll not be beneficial for a student like me who has opted for a core branch, but now I think I should continue with it. Thanks for your motivation.
#For the joy of learning😃😃😃.
There are a lot of useful information on this channel. I can compare 1 video with 1 page of a good book. And this is a rarity. Thank you for changing life’s! And good luck 🍀
You always motivate me! Thank you so much for these inspirational videos
This is the most honest review about "education". MY John Fish Fan Boy has been reignited again!
Love this John :) We do are brought up with a negative association with learning in our free time.
thanks john, you're really inspiration to me. FROM BRAZIL.
Love your channel!
Great content. Small work over time = large impact
Your videos are the most helpful ones I have ever watched...i truly enjoy watching them thank you so much😊
If I had watched this a year ago, I’d probably not have been able to catch the essence of the matter. Actually, I started learning English (it’s my 3rd language) through the internet and omg I’ve learned so much more in several weeks than I do in a year of English taught at school. I’m almost fluent now and I could tell that it’s probably the best decision of my life. Throughout the year, I began considering the idea of studying abroad. Without a strong belief that my English will be consistent enough once high school is over, the motivation would have faded away in a few days. But because I was seeing amazing results of my learning, I persisted. I didn’t have the slightest idea of how it feels to learn for fun. But don’t get me wrong, it’s not something that comes in an instant, it’s all about how dedicated you are. I’m now preparing the TOEFL, my application to UK universities and reading V. Woolf essays. Thank you John, thanks for reminding me that it applies to any other area, how easy it is to just get a book and grow interests and skills :)
Really out of all of your videos that I loved them all this one hit me hard! Nailed it.
Hi Fish, today i was in a depressive mood, my life in this moment it`s not the best and in just feel exhausted and dull with myself. However i found your videos, and just feel like slap. what i needed in this moment to wake up and think on me.
Sometimes it`s hard see the brigth side .
thank you.
(sorry if my writing it`s not the best, i learn english step by step).
Spent the whole video expecting: 'and that's why a sponsored up with skillshare'
Love this video!! Thanks John!!! ❤️

A truly inspiring video. Thank you very much!
Really love this guy.
Thank you so much for this!
You are an inspiration!🧡🧡
Thanks John 🙌
Thank you for that. I also study computer science and feel like it's never moving on and you motivated me :')
Well done John, Well said
ilysm. your videos are really motivating.
Really love you. Thank you for all the inspiration
For the past three days, I have been working on a python based project. I just graduated from high school and I was just thinking the same thing you are. When I got certain things to work from reading the documentation it felt good. I realized that learning could and SHOULD be fun. I had a terrible web development/computer science teacher in high school who just cared more about assignments than actual learning. This led me to not caring about learning and caring more about completing assignments (copy and paste ) *cough* *cough*. Anyways, I just started to learn on my own. I hope I become consistent in learning more. Thanks, now I know I'm not the only one.
yes one should read book ,learn, do.......But the thing i learn most from your videos is how to sell things.... thanks for inspiring
"that excited warm feeling" OMG I do feel that in historical method class!!!
Thank you john , you motivate me to study smart and study better and not waste so much time as i used to do
Now i'm going to get into colleague
My goal was to get 98% in high school
But last week if got 95% and i'm happy with it
Because if i wasn't working hard this could be 80% or maybe 70%
Now i can get into IT colleague and learn from my misatkes
I learned from my mistake in 9th grade ,
9th grade i've got 75%
12th grade 95%
And maybe in colleague i'll reach my goal and got the 98% and that's improvement because of you
So my last wish to student and every one have a goal is to learn from mistakes we made
Don't be sad if you haven't achived your goal, no you have to be smart and research what is the thing that made you not achive it
Love from syria🖤
This is so easy for you to say. Not everyone is a genius/ computer science prodigy taking one of the hardest CS courses in the world like you!!
