    I bought a used 2003 Camry 8 years ago with 130,000 miles on it for 3500 bucks. I also will NEVER sell it! Runs like a dream and besides changing the brakes / battery and oil...I have only had to change 1 ignition coil and very recently the starter. This car is now reaching 200k miles and again...I will never sell it. Best 3500 dollars I have ever spent.

    I do know that generation with thr 2.4L had striped head bolt issues. I bought a 2006 dirt cheap back in 2020 but needed a new head gasket. I don't think a recall was ever made for for just a service bulletin. They also burn quite a bit of oil. But other than that, these cars are bullet proof reliable. Valve cover leaks and ignition coils are common maintenance items that go bad over time. Just keep up with the maintenance they can last almost forever. I have about 213k miles on mine as I bought it already with 187k miles on it.

      @@amrtarek-c7w Not every year of the 2.4 liter engine is known for oil burning. Just the ones with low compression piston rings. My understanding is that- there was a TSB and extended warranty beginning in 2007 6th generation Camry for the oil burning issue.
      That being said - a fifth generation Camry May burn oil at this point because it’s a car that’s about 20 years oil. Any car this old May burn more oil than a new car. Valve seals dont seal perfectly forever 🤷‍♂️ Mine burns a little oil but I just make sure to change the oil every 5 k with Mobile 1 high mileage full synthetic. 275k now… I’ve seen them with over 350,000 miles and still going. 🚗

    • @MJ100k
      @MJ100k  Před 5 měsíci +1

      If it’s bright red, smells ok and shifts fine, the fluid has been changed at some point. There’s no way 20 year old fluid would still be red and smell ok. The problem is YOU don’t know when the fluid was changed last.
      If I were you, I’d (gently) drive it around a month or two…. Then go ahead and do a transmission drain and fill using the OEM fluid. You won’t get out all the fluid… but that’s ok. That’s good in fact. On older cars, I think flushes can do more harm than good sometimes.
      I’ve never flushed my trans fluid on my 04 Camry. I just drive it real gently and do drain and fills approx every 50k.
      You can go ahead and change your other fluids at that time if you want. Brake fluid, coolant and power steering fluid. Keeping your fluids changed, with the factory fluid… and driving the car nice and easy… will extend the life of the vehicle as much as possible 👍

    When buying a used car what is the max mileage I should buy or not buy because so many people are selling their cars for a lot of money but the year and mileage is a lot. Would a 2004 Camry go cross country on long road trip?

    • @MJ100k
      @MJ100k  Před rokem +1

      It depends on the 2004 Camry lol
      And for max miles… it depends on the car and what kind of shape it’s in.
      It’s actually harder to drive around a city for two weeks than it is to drive on the highway across the country. Highway miles are much easier on a car than city miles.
      If it were my Camry… that now has 274,000 miles… I might replace my fuel pump first because it’s the original fuel pump and fuel pumps in Japanese cars I’ve noticed tend to go out before 300k(which is ALOT of miles BTW)
      Other than that I’d just inspect it and make sure there was anything it needs.
      For your potential cross country road trip car… How much do you have to spend ?

      I’d take the one that’s in better condition… and if you have access to the maintenance records- the one that has the better previous owner. You don’t just shop a cars year and engine by themselves…. With used cars … especially ones this old… Closely inspect the individual car and Try and screen the previous owner as much as you can. • @MJ100k
      @MJ100k  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Undercoating a car with grease is a known way that people try to prevent rust. So it’s not sketchy in an of itself. I’m just hoping they didn’t apply it to the vehicle in hopes of covering up an already super rusty situation.
      For cars - some surface rust is not a big deal… rust becomes a safety problem when it gets deep and parts / frame begins to flake of and crumble. If I were you I’d pay a mechanic or mobile mechanic to go with you to look at the vehicle.
      You can find one in your area on Craigslist most likely. They can bring those little plastic ramps to drive the car up onto to get a good look underneath and make sure your not buying a rusted out, unfixable disaster.
      Remember you’re NOT looking for perfection here: just looking to a avoid wasting several thousand dollars. If the mechanic finds a-few small things wrong ie tie rods, small leaks from the valve cover gasket or power steering rack… I would still get the car, (you can fix them at your discretion) use those things as an excuse to lower the offer 2 or 300$… Then that will offset the cost you had to pay the mechanic. If they find it’s really in terrible shape. You’ll lose 100/150$ inspection fee…. But you won’t lose your whole 4500$ 💯👍

    Do you have any thoughts on the Chevy Impalas the later ones with a 3.9 or 3.5 motors? you see them for sale sometimes - would they be OK if you can't afford a good used Camry or Honda Accord? Outside of the Ford Fusion, are they any other American Cars what would be OK as a daily driver for a while? thx Any thoughts on older Hyundai or Dodge/Chryslers? • @MJ100k
      @MJ100k  Před rokem +1

      Ehh.. I’m not a big fan of Impalas or old Hyundai/Kia.. I know for Dodge.. if you get something with the 3.6l engine try to make sure it’s not one of the first series, they had a problem with valves but they got it fixed eventually. Also if you can get one with the zf 8 speed transmission, that’s the better pick. ZF is a different company that Dodge buys their transmissions from and they are pretty good.
      But with any car have a mechanic check it out before you buy it. Also try to look at the car fax - some dealers have it online when you’re shopping on their website- sometimes they show maintenance records. If you can find a car with one owner (two at most) who did all their maintenance religiously then grab that car. That’s how I picked my second Camry. I saw the carfax online- it had one owner- oil change ever 5000 miles - coolant and trans flush done etc.. When your shopping for a used car- you don’t just shop for a good car- you shop for a good previous owner lol

      Any used car can have problems. Even Toyotas and Hondas. I try to get cars with a low chance of expensive problems. So when I look at used cars I try to focus on the engine and transmission.
      Any of the cars on my what is the best year playlist are potential good used vehicles. I also have videos on how to shop for used cars using the carfax and trying to screen the previous owner. That topic has a playlist too. I’d watch how to shop for the best Honda Crv - so you can see how it’s done.
      A vehicle I haven’t done a video on yet is the 3 rd gen Ford Escape years 2017-2019. I haven’t done all the research on the car yet but it does look promising. There are several at over 200k for sale right now, which is a good sign. For this car get the 2.5 liter duratec engine. If I’m getting a used Ford… I’d get one with a duratec series engine and not a turbo eco boost engine. Those eco boost can be problematic.

      What’s the most amount of miles an older car (2004-2008) should have considering the previous owner kept up with maintenance and I hire a mechanic to thoroughly inspect it? I’m currently looking at 2004-2008 Toyota Camrys, corollas and avalons. I want to be able to keep the car for at least 10 years without any major problems. I’m just not sure how much mileage matters if the cars been taken care of and doesn’t have any problems. I’m still reading more about it online.

      @@jasminecontreras7341 If it were me, I’d try to get one with under 160,000 miles and try to put 100,000 on it. I’d stick with the 4 cylinder engines. The Avalon only comes with a 6 cylinder engine. It’s a good engine too but cost a little more to work on. Even if you get a good car there is no guarantee there won’t be any major problems. It’s just much less likely. If something big goes like an engine or transmission it’s easier and less costly to replace in a four cylinder. Also, when I get a used car I try and shop the car AND the previous owners. A good previous owner is a huge part of the equation. A bad previous owner can turn any great car into a terrible car. @@MJ100k Super helpful video. I actually just got a call from the body shop saying that my 2016 Chevy Cruze was deemed a total loss after a collision that I got into last week. I really want to down grade to something modest and reliable that I could possibly use all of my insurance settlement to buy in cash. If I don’t have a lot of good options with the settlement amount I get then I’d consider getting a good car for 10k or less from a dealership to finance and hopefully get a monthly payment that’s lower than 200. The car I had before the Chevy Cruze was a 2008 Prius and I thought it was a good car, I got it for 10k with 50k miles on it. It ended up giving me a lot of problems like a transmission problem that was around 3k to fix. Also, in your recent video you mentioned some things that drain the car battery. Does getting a back up camera/apple car play system installed into an older car mess with the car battery?
