In It Lives Inside, an Indian-American teen struggling with her cultural identity has a falling out with her former best friends and in the process, unwittingly releases a demonic entity that grows stronger by feeding on her loneliness. We're breaking down the story, including what the entity is all about, and explaining the ending.

Kinda makes me sad thinking the demon is a metaphor for depression. It eats you up inside, isolates you, makes you feel helpless. She was only able to fight it when she told her mom and even though they subdued it, it's still inside her. And if she gives in to her depression, it can kill her
i agree when i was in my worst i looked just like that girl with the jar.
it is no longer depression, it is the entity which causes her to feel hopeless, if the entity consumes on loneliness then it is able to manifest that same feeling itself, logically sam has no reason to feel alone and depress anymore, sealing a primordial demonic entity inside yourself doesnt come with no consequence
This is kinda similar to the metaphore about grief in the Babadook.
@@cloudstalker8956 Every notice anyone else like that anywhere around you?
kinda makes you sad? did we watch the same movie? is everyone stunted now? yes that was the whole fucking point rogert ebert
Culturally specific horror is such an untapped niche in Hollywood. Though the story itself wasn't surprising from the perspective of Sam it's new and odd and just as confusing as it would be for us COMPLETE outsiders because THATS how sam feels. Due to it being so heavily specific to real cultural lore were all able to immediately feel how big and bad the monster is without the movie spending half of itself giving exposition we all immediately know Sams in danger she just don't know it lol
Been saying that for years. Instead of rebooting old films that don't need new versions, or pissing off and insulting fans by race, gender swapping characters (especially when it is a historical or mythological based story and doesn't make any sense) they should instead look to the Nearly Endless supply of Fascinating, scary, fantastical stories that are just waiting to be plucked and developed for audiences who are bored to tears of the stale, soulless, drastically lesser quality crap or endless sequels, reboots, reimagined takes of beloved films that ALWAYS end up sucking and flopping! Hollywood got so obsessed with preaching and pushing the message, meeting race, gender, sex preference based hiring quotas to promote "equity instead of equality... They Fired or Ran off all the Talented and Experienced writers and directors in the process.
As such it has become Creatively Bankrupt! And people ain't paying all that money to be preached at, or to see their favorite characters turned into morons to prop up self insert characters who are always infallible... Nobody can relate to that.
People want escapism! Good story, character development, life situations we all can relate to... Nobody cares about the other things except them. Which is why Hollywood is hemorrhaging money and making flop after flop!
@@blahblah6497 Or try pushing the envelope further on the difference from the original
Yeah because they’re to busy demonizing nuns
As a horror enthusiast, I DESPERATELY need more cultural horror stories. We've been stuck with the same handful of European folktales and not even any of the cool lesser known ones! So many cultures have amazingly terrifying monsters and entities that are completely overlooked in a genre that's already so oversaturated with the same old shit.
Check out some
Korean horror movies.
Honestly aggreged. It's not even different european ones, it's the same old ones all the time. Where I live (europe) there's plenty really cool creatures and stories, but even THAT is too different from the norm.
People want the same stories over and over. And studios are scared of new things.
I want more foreign cultural horror stories. We get to see different cultures and they get to be represented. Win-win. Just needs to be respectful honestly.
My family (Filipino) has a strong third eye (sixth sense) and would always tell me different experiences with the supernatural growing up and they were always terrifying. My dad told me of this one time during all Saints day where in the Philippines, some people would sleep at graveyards or churches to show signs of respect to the dead. Him and his friends slept at a church one time and he woke up around the devil's hour (3-4am) to take a piss. To get to the bathroom you'd need to go down this long hallway and down these spiral stairs which leads you to a short hall to the bathroom. My dad did all that, took his piss and when he opened the door he looked down the hall and saw a sleeping bag in front of the steps to the stairs. He said he freaked and closed the door. He knew it was something supernatural and told himself he's just going to look away and run. He opened the door and saw the sleeping bag half open with hands coming out of it. Closed the door again, recollected himself and tried to hype himself again to run. He opened the door and this time he saw a woman with half a body and long hair dragging herself out of the bag reaching out to him and moaning in pain. Again he closed the door. Told himself he just needs to look away and run as fast as he can. Swung the door open, and ran down the hall, up the stairs and ran out of the church. Got near the front gates of the church and took a breather. He turned back to look at the church, but instead of the church, what he said he saw was the same woman in front of him with her hands on his shoulders and her intestines hanging and trailing to the sleeping bag that was on the floor. He then fainted and didn't wake up till the next morning where people found him. That story made me terrified of stair ways. Specifically coming out of rooms situated in front of stairs. I'd always imagine seeing a sleeping bag at the end of stairways.
@@defstone999 That sounds like he had a run in with a mannanangal or something similar!
@@animefallenangel just googled it and wow that definitely fits the description lol, he didn't say anything about wings tho.
That poor girl looking "haunted" is an understatement
2:39 When she runs out of the house she purposely forgets her lunch. You also see her sniff her sweater walking to school. I’ve watched interviews of 2nd gen adults say as kids they would beg their parents to have a “normal” lunch and try to “forget” their lunches at home. Kids in school would tell them the food smelled.
Well to be honest the spices do have a really strong smell. Im not saying its bad or kids deserve to be made fun of but if you aren't use to it the odor is overwhelming. I remember when I was in 8th grade there was an indian girl who was picked on a lot but she was a sweet girl and her and I were friends. Once during class I got really cold and she offered me her hoodie but the smell was so strong I only wore it long enough to not be rude then took it off and thanked her saying I was warm enough. On the bus that afternoon this girl that sat next to me asked me why I smelled like that. And I only wore the sweater for about 10 min. After christmas break that same year I had received a jacket for Christmas that was a big deal to me bc we were very poor when i was growing up. (My mom, God rest her soul, did everything she could to provide for my little brother and me all on her own but brand new clothes were a luxury even if they were from Family Dollar or the like) So the first day back to school in January I was so excited to have a new piece of clothing to wear. The same indian friend of mine asked me to wear my jacket as soon as I took it off. I was so scared of hurting her feelings so I handed it over. She wore it all freaking day even though it was way too hot to have it on. I was still too nice to ask for it back until the very end of the day when it looked like she was literally going to wear it home. Of course she sweated in it all day so it was damp on the inside. And I swear I literally never got the smell out of it. No matter how many times I washed it. I still had kids ask me what that smell was on me. My Christmas present was ruined. I was devastated. Now that im much much older I see it a little differently. I actually think she wanted to wear my clothes bc she was tired of being teased and wanted to fit in as well. The teasing i got was miniscule compared to how much she was made fun of. Ultimately what i went through was less traumatizing than it would have been for her had I said something and embarrassed her. The subtle scenes in this movie where she left her lunch of purpose kind of confirm to me what I already suspected my friend from middle school was going through. Humans can be very cruel. Anyways that's my little personal experience on this topic. Sorry for the rambling paragraph.
What I don't get about Persians and Indians is why their parents are so fucking hard headed about that shit and FORCE their kids to continue to follow their religion, eat their food and refuse to allow them to assimilate. Why bother moving to America if you are not going to allow your children to benefit from the freedoms?
What I enjoy the most about your channel is how you let the content shine through, without resorting to hysterical sketches, loud noises or distracting catchphrases. Thank you
Edit: I’m not referring to dead meat (love James and how he supported the unions). I was thinking more nostalgia critic as loud and screaming.
He definitely does sketches sometimes, just a good content creator
@@Zayzurfer well yes, but it’s rare or atleast quite infrequent and even the sketch itself isn’t a cacophony of high pitched noises and loud colors.Contrast it with Doug walker for instance
You can just say dead mean /s

Just in case anybody wants to know - the diary had "crow meat" and "lonely" written all over in Hindi. I'm guessing Karan(?) was feeding the Pishash/pissasu/pishachi/pichachi crows.
Crows are important in hinduism. They ferry the souls. Hindus are forbidden to kill crows.
@@MichToJoshya okay
@@MichToJoshya Then wouldn't killing crows make her situation worst?

I wouldn't want to be fed crow meet either, because IMO, they're the "Karens" of the bird species with all that loud annoying screaming that they do.......just like how Karens are? 🤣
I'm happy to continue to see the actress who played the teacher in this horror film.. she did GET OUT and The Purge franchise to name a few
She also played in a movie called Upgrade, that was released in 2018. The movie itself was a hidden gem for me, & she was great as always in it! I love seeing her on screen as well!
@@teerice2692 oh okay.. I didn't see Upgrade just yet and I want to check out It Lives Insides as well.. well that's on my Netflix list for the weekend
sometimes you don't realize how important your culture and identity are until something bad happens
I agree but the mother still acts like a complete and utter bitch towards her daughter.
I agree, and where most ppl think the mom is overbearing, etc., I believe she just wanted Sam to not abandon her culture and that mom knew something was wrong and her friend needed help because of what happened to the other family recently? I also think maybe her mother had either experienced or witnessed a run in with ol Pistachio, before with how things played out in the movie? Sam's big eyes weren't right for how disgusted she behaved towards her mother, and was in a hurry to abandon her culture like a pair of funky drawls but just as soon as her little American boyfriend got dragged around the swing-set(I laughed so hard because it looked like how a dog shakes it's head when playing with a toy)all those non-minority American faces glaring at her as if she was some dog poop they dun stepped on? 🤦🏽♀
Like your loved ones dying or being lonely in the holidays
@@yucol5661 dude 50 % of mine nation is like dat
@@faithruckdeschel1294 Her mom *was* overbearing, and while a parent or other grown adult may see this is a minor issue at most, how its experienced by a teenage child is essentially a kind of abandonment, the lack of acceptance of who she is, in favor of who her mom insists she must be. It doesn't have to be severe abuse for it to be inadequate. And her mother recognizes this fact by the end.
Its the old story. Not at all exclusive to immigrant families to USA.
I’m glad you like the movie, I thought the metaphor was a little heavy-handed but I hope to see more horror movies about real issues like cultural tension
As soon as he described the film, I thought….oh man, this sounds like a heavy-handed analogy type film and NOT a “fresh take”, really. Although I would applaud a deliberate dive into East Indian mythology.
The poster of the movie with sam holding a jar and with multiple hands holding archaic hindu weapons is a nod to Goddess Durga who is depicted with those hands holding weapons and her two main hands holding a spear in the act of killing a demon (Mahishasur, water buffalo demon)
The book has कच्चा मांस written which means Raw meat.
Not my favorite movie but enjoy hearing your synopsis and analysis.
Thanks for so many great videos!!
Most of the time if I'm not sure about watching a movie, I'll watch his video on it to see if it's worth my time.
@@IWantToPetYourDoghaha I do that too, which annoys my family a great deal😅

i got to see this movie in April of last year at a film festival and im so happy to finally hear people talking about it! I really enjoyed the creature design and the positive themes especially in the main family dynamic. meeting the director was an honor as well
Was he proud? I felt like he was really happy with the end result fitting his vision:)

The girl who plays Sam and the women that plays her mom are both stunning!!
Yes about the women more. I was wondering why the daughter is so much darker than the mother.
lol no
I love that the entity comes by for dinner and the mom says "There is nothing here for you!". Like bruh, didnt YOU invite it here? Also, the fact it just flips the table when it doesnt see anything it likes and leaves. Thing is a chad xD
One other thing, why does the entity look like Pyke from League of Legends? It even has the invisibility ability.
i mean league of "legends" the entity is a religion legend im just spitballing here i dont play the game but could be

I love hearing about movies I’ve never heard of before on this channel. There are so many that would have never even come across my radar.
I enjoyed the movie. It was nice that it wasnt just pure gore and more on fear. Since the monster feeds on negative emotions. It just fucked around before wanting to kill you, it's like a cat.
yeah a cat whom you just say "PSH" and it fucks off. where is the fear in that lmao
My favorite channel, theres very few these days I eagerly await an upload from
But what if the demon possessed a happy, well-adjusted introvert? Alone, but without negative feelings about it?

I relate to this channel because my most loving nurturing aunt owned a video/VHS rental store back from the 80’s until she said tech is going another way. It’s time I let the next generation make their mind up on what they like. I will always respect her for that. Shout to you Aunt DiDI you were the best chain smoking coolest fucking aunt ever and as happy as I am you quit smoking 15 years ago I still get nostalgia when someone lights that’s first part of a cig.
My point is she had a video shelf that looked just like yours behind you. I was spoiled and able to pick every single movie before it came out to the public and they had a little banner across the bottom with a warning, saying this is for preview only something something. I watched so many cool movies she had stacks of shelves cinema, the most amazing art not many appreciate
Your aunt sounds like a total boss what great memories to have yo 😊
I really enjoyed this one. It was a pleasant surprise and, as you said, felt fresh despite using some common tropes. I loved the actress playing Sam and hope to see her in more stuff.

It's really nice to see some variety in the horror space, exploring different experiences AND cultures.

Awesome video!! Thanks for another year of great content!!
Finally! A movie review that you enjoy. It really makes a difference when you actually enjoy covering a movie that you find interesting. Here's to the strength to ignore retelling movies that you find a bore.
What? He reviews lots of movies he likes. I think his positive reviews outnumber the negative ones. You must be new here
@dontgivetwothwips3615 he does a lot of positive reviews but is not usually this enthusiastic about them. He mentions a lot that they all tend to blend together and it can be a burden to rewatch similar story line while still highlighting what he likes about each film.
Maybe think more critically and you wouldn't misunderstand so much.

my step brothers and step dad are Nigerian immigrants, i watched this movie with my step dad and he said that the movie touched him in many ways. The problem with being an immigrant, is that its hard for people to understand that there should be a balance, between the new and the old cultures, theres so many people who go to somewhere better and cast aside their old culture, ultimately becoming more racist than the people they feel shamed by, or those who refuse to adjust to their surroundings and new environment which makes them feel alienated and depressed. Though there will always be a feeling of isolation when you immigrate somewhere, its a lot easier of a process when you decide a balance, it makes you happier, thats what my step dad says. I appreciated this move and (i think its called His House or something) for showing the arduous process of trying to find that balance and adjusting to a brand new life, thank you for this movie analysis, wonderful video!
U should really cover Tumbbad if you wanna see Indian Horror/Thriller at its best. Love the videos
Tumbbad was such a great movie! Needs a rewatch but a bit too scared to watch again😂

I like the scene where the lights in the hallway are turning on by themselves. It's so simple, but an interesting way to turn the horror trope of the lights turning off one by one on it's head

One thing you can give props to the conjuring series for is that they laid out the plot of every supernatural horror movie: part 1: starts with the infeststion part 2: is the opression and finally posession
Wouldn’t give conjuring props for that. All possessed movies basically go with the same formula. Just a matter of how different is the story and characters
@malikkelly I agree but I'm saying they were the ones to literally come out and say it
Please do Beau is afraid! ❤😁
I loved this movie because this was me. I went to elementary & middle school in suburbia. I was the only biracial (white and black) girl in my grade. If I didn’t have a younger sister it would have been the whole school. I remember how hard it was just wanting to be the same. I always had friends, but coming to school with beads in your hair was hard. I’ve found myself years ago, but seeing someone like me find herself was good.
I’m glad that you’re now finding yourself.

Have you watched Hotel Acacia yet? Pretty creepy. Need it explained!
I think that thing might be spelled "Pisaca" and that tear from Sam at the end might be from the fact she had to become "That Girl." No normal or fully Americanized life for her at all, Sam has to be a warden to a demon ... and if she fails, the people closest to her are going to be the first to get got.
I was going to watch this movie but glad you explained it because i was right to wanting to watch it
I dare this demon to come at me. It would die from overeating.
