- A former FC Barcelona striker, Gary Lineker always has positive words for the club. The player-turned-TV presenter also appeared for Tottenham Hotspur, Barça's next opponents, during his successful career, and spoke to their media ahead of Wednesday's Champions League clash.
In the interview, Lineker emphasised that Spurs will have a difficult task ahead in the game: "Stopping the best player in the world, Leo Messi."

People forget what a great player Gary Lineker was
Why I think Messi is the best player I have ever seen play:
He's actually a complete player. Being complete doesn't mean being strong and fast. Those are just physical aspects. Being complete is knowing to read the game on the highest level. What's reading the game? It's having great vision, seeing players making runs and giving them a pass or forcing them to make a run by sending them away with a pass. It's knowing how your opponent is facing you and how you can play that by choosing to make a dribble or give a pass. Messi can go right, left, stop, look around before he got the ball, pass, shoot etc. He isn't predictable. He can go any way around you. He has forced teams to park the bus. Just putting a defender on him with 2 or 3 extra players isn't enough. They have to defend him with whole defenses and sometimes whole teams.
Next to his smarts and great decision making he has the highest level of touch. He can touch the ball in every single way. His first touch is the best, he has total control. He also has the best dribble because of that touch. He keeps the ball so close to him, he can touch the ball so many times and be in total control over it while also running at a fast pace. It's staggering how much control he has.
He can easily play everywhere in the forward positions and on midfield. That's his level of insight, vision, dribble, passing, positioning, making runs etc. There isn't a player in the world that can do all of these things so good.
He has qualities of an Iniesta, Modric, Zidane, Ronaldo etc. all in one. A better pass than Modric, a better dribble than Zidane, scores more goals than a Brazillian Ronaldo, sees the game better than a Zidane or a Pirlo. And he has freekicks on a Beckham level, a specialist level.
I've seen players like Zidane play, Pirlo, Scholes, Ronaldo 9, Ronaldo 7 etc. etc. and without any hate towards any of them. Messi is just the best. I also loving seeing Ronaldo 7 play but it doesn't come close to the refined quality of Messi. Just the way Messi touches the ball is pure beauty. Seeing him walk around and looking around already thinking what he's going to do. It's such a joy to watch. He was even more dangerous when teams didn't adapt to him. I remember totally going through all kinds of defenses like a knife through hot butter.
Whenever people compare him to Ronaldo it's funny to me. Even after what Messi has shown people still underestimate him. Kinda crazy. It's even funnier when people start talking stats. Being a good footballer has nothing to do with stats. It's about what you see skillwise on the pitch. There is no stat for the level of someones first and second touch.
This is great and all, but I think Messi's greatest attribute is his intelligence. Think about the last time Messi actually smashed the ball rather than finessing it. Messi doesn't rely on brute power like Ronaldo. He calculates everything. From his positioning, to his dribbling, to his finishing. You rarely see Messi try scoring from crazy angles which is why he rarely misses. Compare that to Ronaldo, who is undeniably a great player, but has the one of the worst shot-to-goal ratio in Europe for many seasons now. Messi's brilliance comes in the simplicity that he brings to the game. If Messi was put into a situation where he could try scoring or passing, he would ALWAYS choose the better option. If passing to Suarez would guarantee a goal, he would pass. That selflessness combined with logic makes him more efficient than any other player I've seen. He is the perfect example of intelligent football.

This is honestly the comment I wanted to see to summarize my feelings too. There are great dribblers, there are great passers, there are great goal scorers etc...but I've never seen anyone actually master each and everyone one of those attributes. At this point it feels to me like Messi kept looking at his abilities and was like "hmm, I've mastered goal scoring and dribbling...what should I do next...maybe freekicks, passing?" the dude basically chooses to master an aspect of the game for fun.

Not only is Lionel Messi the greatest player to ever exist in the universe he is also the greatest role model for not only football fans, players, aspiring football players etc. but for any athlete whose sports isn't football. Plus, I think Lionel Messi can't be called a "world class" player because that class isn't big enough to contain this little man. He's way above what we call world class. There should be a God class and if it was actually a class then Messi is the only player I would see fit in it.
