Cheers T Man, glad you enjoyed it, lovely area it is, when I said unspectacular I meant not really flashy like nearby Thong Lor. Briefly lived in Soi 61 in 2004 then moved to Thong Lor in Sukhumvit 53, that cleaned me out financially as I wasn't earning fast enough, my spending and money management were awful. Back then Thong Lor was pretty quiet at night.

NOthing spectacular, but pretty peaceful and lots of surprises - more of 'wow this place is still around' feeling especially traditional noodle shops (the beef noodle one opposite Santika is pretty traditional). Also a couple of modern food and drink in the area - and less crowded - too. Khlong Saen Saeb now smells much better than now compared to the 80s. Oh and back during the 70s you could still find small rice fields around Sukhumvit 71, and Ramkamhaeng was really baan nok.

@@BangkokPat My family and I usually enjoy staying at a riverfront hotel for part of our trip. Last trip (August 2017) we enjoyed staying at the Sheraton on the Chao Phraya. It was awesome! It had two swimming pools for my son to enjoy, a magnificent water view, and a stellar breakfast buffet. Anyway, the Oriental Hotel (ranked number one in the world on some lists) is in close proximity and has a rich/legendary history. So much so, you could dedicate at least half of an episode to the hotel itself. It has a magnificent hotel bar to be enjoyed in the lobby and outdoors along the river. I would imagine that a moderately priced drink there is between 800-1,000 Baht each. I’m going to buy you at least two! It’s pricey but it’s an experience that is truly memorable! Afterwards, if your schedule permits, we’ll then join my family on one of those awesome boat tours. The food on those is usually subpar but we can option to buy only drinks. Perhaps we can have a quick meal somewhere decent prior to boarding. You can leave your wallet at home that day as it won’t be needed.

CZcams was recommending your Ekkamai vlog from last June, so I had a look, as it is one of my preferred areas. I used to stay near the bus station, so I could get an early bus direct to Trat ferry port & onto Koh Chang. I used to stay at Lodge61, on 61 alley. There used to be a nice outdoor restaurant with live music, on the corner of 63 - is that Ekkamai Rd? Looks like it's going to condos now? I must have wondered up Thong Lo Rd, and found a small bar with live music - hundreds of light bulbs hanging down. You must right what you say about the bkk bus stations originally being on the edges of the City. Being the cynic I am, I've seen many places build new bus stations on the outskirts, and assumed it was also to give business to all the taxi drivers. I noticed the vegetable garden you covered had large 'lego' bricks for dwarf walls - two big connecting circles on top lol. Odd how this never took off in Europe.

Cheers Jimmy, Ekkamai keeps a low profile and is a great place to live, when the bars and pubs are all open it can get lively along there but many are going down the connecting sois. Shame about Santika but they took risks! There's always cats hanging around so it's hard to avoid them!! Thank you Steve, I was told in 2003 that Hi Tech tower was a great place close to Thong Lor and all transport links. I had a look and wasn't too tempted I'm afraid. Mainly because of the characters that were lurking around the internet shop nearby. I been to Major many times over the years but for some reason never the cinema, I worked down Soi 61 for a while and was there every lunchtime so maybe I got fed up of the place. Cheesecake House is great for cakes, of course. The old Music One record shop was upstairs too, used to stock vinyl until they disappeared around 2004/5.

Oho! Donki has made it to Bangkok. A whole mall, at that (in Singapore it's a shop within a mall, there's several), in Japan it's called "Don Quijote" and there are some big ones and some small ones. In Singapore they had to change the name because there was already a bar called "Don Quijote". (My idea of a "souvenir" when I visited Singapore was a Donki tote bag.) I wonder if the Donki jingle has been translated to Thai, it's in English in Singapore. Very catchy. It's the king of quirky merchandise - men's underwear with "SAPPY" or "BLACK MAN" printed on the waist band, for instance. Lots of CZcams videos (usually from Japan) on this subject.

@@BangkokPat True - I didn't find much that I actually wanted to buy. I suppose if you want Japanese snacks, or Japanese cooking ingredients, it's a great place to get them. But it is super quirky, and worth looking at at least once. I guess if there's one there's probably several in Bangkok by now. The prices may be low by Japanese standards (in the stores in Japan) but in Singapore the prices were still Japanese prices and they were pretty expensive (much like Family Mart prices in Malaysia).

One of my fave/regular haunts when it was originally on Washington Square & I believe Doug is still running the place. a great guy!!!!!!! Are you still boxing? @BangkokPat  Před 3 lety

Thanks Anton, must have been a few decades back, walking over that bridge. Did they have the same old buses at Ekkamai? Actually now most are the mini buses, smoother, quicker and lots of leg room. I covered Bourbon St in my Washington Sq video and the owner noticed it so it's only right I give a quick glimpse of it if I'm down this way!! I stopped daily boxing training about 10yrs ago, I do use a bag and practice but no sparring. They got a bag at Chatuchak park weights area. You fought for cash? What kind of paydays were they? I always wondered about that back in the day, quick cash but I hated body shots!!

No, i never boxed for money, i wasnt that good or that crazy, certainly not in Thailand, although i was a schoolboy amateur boxer for the Irish school i attended & later boxed for the company i served my engineering apprenticeship with!!!!!
