- Foreign guys who date Thai women are stereotypically branded 'mongers' or 'sex tourists' because mainstream media puts a sleazy, suspicious spin on it, which is sometimes inaccurate and ridiculous. That's not to say there's no sleaze or red lights, or dodgy bargirls about, it's just that so many men fall in love with them. Thailand's nightlife is legendary in places like Bangkok and Pattaya. It's an adult playground, and I have a sneaky feeling there's a wiff of jealousy from these haters! There are plenty of guys who don't fit their ideal stereotype and not every Thai woman is a goldigging hustler with a sick buffalo back home in the village, times have changed. But there are many farangs who arrive here ready to fall for the first bargirl who looks at them. Men are falling in love very quickly and easily with Thai women. Why?

I visited Thailand twice before I moved there for work in '01. What I quickly realized was this. On vacation, you had little to no chance of meeting a 'normal' Thai woman no matter what your situation. However, once you began working for a company, you interacted with these women daily and many of them wanted to date or have a serious relationship with you. Being in that situation caused me to view barhopping as a waste of time and I never frequented them again. Anyway, another high-quality video, Pat! You keep bringing back old memories for me.
I've been to Thailand multiple times, but I am also in my 20s. I loved the night bar scene, and found it very easy to find real relationships away from the bars. Some of my best friends I still talk to I met in Thailand.
Going back in November, I can't wait.
Great ! I agree, even when you visit for a brief period. Pat has a great channel and it's the first time I believe he's addressed this. At the same time, other channels only profit and exhaust this angle. Their followers are the ones that hail a taxi to Pattaya upon BKK arrival. Most old and dilapidated with fallen ego's rise when told they are handsome. 😀 Channels like @thailandbound cater to these type of fallen men. His monger minute is akin to the drop at a EDM venue, and frenzy of deplorables get wilded up again. The next drop is for. "Spot the Lady Boy" which activates another frenzy amongst the downtrodden.
It's not a waste of time if your not seeking a girlfriend...😅

I married a Thai girl in 2006 (met in 2003) and 17 years later we are still together.
A few of my English friends raised their eyebrows and predicted doom and ironically since then some of their marriages have gone down the toilet.
The culture did provide challenges at first to both of us but you meet half way and learn to understand one another.

Never once tried to “date” a “normal girl” I’m just happy with bargirls. They are my level.

Having seen some of the living hell relationships that exist with western culture I don't begrudge anyone coming here to have some fun and feel something again. If you are older and don't have much time left in this world and have squandered decades on failed miserable relationships I say blow your money have a good time and at least have a few memories before you check out.
Then go and experience a living hell over there in a relationship.. just as many horror stories there.. if not more.

This is a very perceptive well balanced vlog in my opinion Pat. Having travelled to Thailand for many years and NOT having fallen into a bar girl relationship it didn't stop the nudge, nudge, wink, wink comments from friends and work colleagues. Sadly Thailand still comes across as a country of sleeze and more sleeze. Such as shame as anyone who has travelled around the Kingdom will know there is so much more than Soi Cowboy etc etc.
A lot of lonely men are attracted by the thought of meeting a 'dusky maiden' in the land of smiles. Sadly Western women take a dim view of this, more so when a financial transaction is involved. I have heard many times, 'Why don't they just find someone of their own age here'. Well maybe if they looked in the mirror the answer might be staring them in the face!
Agree with Rob - Thai women are very good at showing love and making you feel loved, wanted, needed.
For a lonely man, regardless of age, that feeling (or risk of losing that feeling) will make you do things you'd never dreamed you'd do at any other point in your life.

I have lived here since 1977, so your old footage is very familiar and a lot of it doesn't seem that old. I have been happily married for that last 26 years. I learned to live in Thailand on my own, I learned the language and generally got a life before I met my wife. I wasn't wife hunting or lonely so things happened more naturally with real love, chemistry and attraction. Coming here as an emotional and financial refugee is a recipe for disaster in my opinion. I try not to judge but I keep my distance from the impending train wrecks as I don't want to deal with the drama. In my opinion the most important thing is to know yourself. People like to blame Thailand or Thai girls but it is all down to the guys, in my opinion.

My friends stopped asking about me getting a GF/Wife after I explained I am happy 85% of the time and lonely 5%. I am not willing to destroy the 85% to fill that 5%. If I meet the right woman then I will bring her into my life. It is so nice not needing a relationship. Too many men must have one and they take whatever they find which leads to disaster.

Excellent vlog. Really enjoyed the old videos and pictures of Pattaya and Bangkok. You could say I'm one of those happy endings. Met my wife 20 years ago (now married for almost 18 years). When we met I was 33 years old, and she was 22. She was and is a beautiful lady both inside and out, but it wasn't love at first site and I entered our relationship with a lot of trepidation. When we met, I was not looking for a girlfriend, I'd been burned previously by a past Thai girlfriend. But over time she grew on me and there was a Hawaiian expat community that I was friends with that gave me the support I needed to take the next step. I was able to make our relationship work by being honest with myself and her and really embracing the Thai cultures and norms. I've never lived in Thailand but was able to mold my work into allowing me to have a two week block off every month and I had the means to make the 6 or 7 trips a year to Thailand.
I'm (the Dad here of our duo) and got branded for marrying a Mexican (a real one, not the Cheech and Chong 'East L.A.' stereotype); the easiest thing snooty people from 'Western Countries' love to do, to make themselves feel better I suppose, is to cast suspicions on who my wife is, what her motives truly are, and what a loser I must be... Fastforward 22 years, and we're ultra-happy, still like as well as love each other, and are looking forward to many more decades of bliss, unlike the miserable men around me still married to these 'Western Women' that have behaved themselves out of happiness due to them listening to all media that has indoctrinated them in "how to behave" around us evil men. I still laugh at these people...
Having said that, no matter who you are, to try and find love in a bargirl, stripper, etc; etc; is a recipe for disaster and I still do my best to hammer into the mind of my son that "for these women, you're NOTHING BUT A WALKING ATM!" - Truer words never spoken...
How true about many western women/wives! (especially the aging ones) hahha! Once they get past 40 they become professional whingers and naggers and believe almost any old rubbish that the media tell them to.
I'm married to a Thai lady (just a normal one who works in a normal job ..not a bar girl) and she just keeps getting better and better over time like a fine wine. There's only a 10 year age difference between us though, so generationally we're not far apart. Age difference is something men should take into account if looking to marry a Thai lady. If your 60 and she's only 22, there's a huge difference in age to overcome!. Not many men in their 60's (unless they are wealthy) would be dating a 22 year old back in their home country, yet they think that such a thing will be absolutely fine in Thailand for some reason. If men marry women who are closer to their own age it will increase their chances of a much happier and more faithful and mature relationship.
There are plenty of extremely beautiful older Thai women if one takes the time to look for them. (not in clubs!) I'm not saying that the age thing runs across board, as I'm sure there are couples with a 20+ year age gap who still manage to make their marriages work, but it's just common sense really.
Tell your son that it's easier to take the bar girl out of the bar, than it is to take the bar out of the bar girl!

Spot on observation Pat @10:20 mark. Too many Western women have made themselves unappealing to Western men. I will happily admit to traveling to Thailand partly for female company. Now as a short-term visitor and not a expat I don't have the time for proper traditional dating, though I have great respect for that. So it's ThaiFriendly and bars... I think I'm one of the lonely guys you referenced rather than a "monger". If I meet someone I like I stay with them, and treat them very well. Try to make it an enjoyable shared holiday experience. But I'm not naff enough to think it's anything but a holiday romance. It's over when you return to the airport. I feel sorry for the guys who lose sight of that.
Great video. A lot of this applied to me. I come to Thailand 3 or 4 times a year and made the mistake of falling for the wrong girl and money going back to them frequently. Now I’ve got it in my head that I won’t become involved with a Thai girl until the day i eventually move there permanently. But it’s so hard to not fall for them, they are good at what they do, lure you in to their web

If I had to guess Pat, I'd say that many blokes (not all) that move to SE Asia have been in "loveless" relationships for many years prior to making the move toThailand etc. I also think that most people just want to be loved! This situation makes them particulaly vulnerable and a little blind to a well trained and often very beautiful lady that might pray on these poor souls. They're not stupid. They're not evil. They're not bad or devious,, they're just misguided, lonely and feed up! IMHO.

The first time I was in Thailand was 25 years ago. At the time, it seemed like paradise. I stayed in a beautiful hotel, the staff were smiling, the nightlife was exciting. You met other foreigners who told you that the girls at the bar were often already married (which was true), but that they were tired of Thais who were always drunk and often beat the girls. In the years that followed, I kept coming back, for longer and longer. I had various "affairs", but I was always a bit suspicious. Naive as I was, I thought I had to be loved for my own sake.
Only later do you realize that pure love and affection don't exist. A foreigner asked his Thai girlfriend: "Would you love me even if I had no money?". The wise answer: "If you had no money, I wouldn't be able to love you."
The problem is often that the foreigner tries to impress the Thai woman with extreme generosity, according to the motto: "I'm not like the others". That can ruin you.
I have been together with my Thai wife for 16 years now, we have 2 children and are happy. That could be the end of the story. Or not.
Good job, Pat. As a Thai in a mixed race relationship living in London, it was quite hard for me at the beginning as I noticed the way some people looked at us. Nowadays I just don't give a rat's arse what they think about us. My husband is a good man and I'm proud of him. We met in Chicago while I was studying there.

A relative fell in love with a bar girl in Pattaya but thanks to the pandemic this ended when she started asking for money to be sent to help support her family. He is now talking about moving to Koh Chang and spend his days fishing. I am hoping that this works out for him as he doesn't have much for him at home.
Well on that note he will fall hook line and sinker once again. And it wont be a red snapper fish on the endo f the line either! Once bitten by Thai fever. Its for life! I know as had Thai fever for 23 years now.

@@shaunashton9744 koh Chang is an excellent place to see out your days. I know Thailand well. I actually lived Pattata area 2010 to 2015. And survived with my sanity!! In my early 50s now and working UK. Planning my return to Thailand🇹🇭 Had 2 long term Thai girlfriends over the years. One for 5 years and the last for 7 years. But pandemic lock down closed that relationship. First girlfriend I took out of the bar when she was 23 and lived together Pattaya. Second was lovely mainstream Thai professional. Both were lovely ladies. Circumstance broke relationships down. Don't listen to all the horror stories. I have fond memories of my ladies. Looking forward to finding the Third. She won't be a bar girl. I'm too experienced for that now.😉😎

Nice video, Pat, and thanks for the old video clips. Reminds me of the first time I went to Thailand in the 1980s. Single men can have a great time in Thailand, but it's important to remember that any relationship you might strike up with a bar girl is going to be transactional. She gets money to send home to the family, while you are rewarded with good company during your stay. Keeping things simple and not getting too involved is the best way to go.

Even now, when people say it's changed, that people are not as friendly as back in the day, I have to disagree. I'd give anything to nip down to my local coffee shop in Sukhumvit Soi 8 for a coffee. You are always welcomed by the staff, everyone always in a good mood, and happy to see you, it's infectious, and better than anything I get back here.

Great video Pat, quite a contentious topic and I enjoyed musing it with you on our walking tour (If you are in Bangkok and want to see a different take on the city then I can highly recommend Pats tours!). I certainly don't begrudge those that come here because the dating scene in the West has become abysmal. Unfortunately the type who only think below the waistline aren't the smartest buttons on the shirt. Just having light skin and a credit card isn't enough to cut it with regular Thai women, they are far more discerning than that!

Hi pat next time I’m in Bangkok I’m going to travel on that BTS train and hopefully visit the places your going to the victory monument and the park with the lizard and the circle, it’s great that the Thais are so proud of there history I’m like you from London and we have a great history, the only place I’ve really seen in Bangkok is the floating market and my girl dragging me around the shops, it great your channel really enjoy all the lovely peaceful places away from all the bars and stuff, keep up the great work pat good on ya.

I found my girlfriend simouy from lao in a jungle miles away from bang sarey. She was cooking there. It was 2 weeks before I was speaking to here .my mate misses and the owner said she was sound. Still with here 6 years.never been so happier. There are nice girls out their just take your Time.

Word of advice. Don't get carried away by emotions, just because you get noticed once you come to Thailand. I know most guys aren't use to this kind of attention back home. But brace yourself, and be cool. And for gods sake, don't get a relationship with a bar girl.

“To fall (spiral downward out of control) in love” is not a good description of love except in Hollywood movies and romance novels. Men are simply following their biological imperative and desire for unlimited access to unlimited women. Going from having no access in some cases to what seems like unlimited access can have serious consequences.

thank you for a very informative video. this would remind people to think consciously when they look for a partner.
some fact about Thai demographics: a) more female than male (more young men died from accident, other unnatural clauses, or locked away in prison), b) so many young men choose to become gals (my Thai friends estimate 5-10% Thai male who prefer their own type than women). I know a Thai female lawyer in her 30's who has a good command of English dating a French guy because she couldn't find any Thai men. You look around and can easily find so many 25 - 45 (or even older) Thai single women in Bangkok workplace.
I'll tell my experience as someone who is 28, and been to Thailand multiple times.
I LOVE the night scene there, and still enjoy it every visit. Of course, you most likely won't find a Thai girl that is "relationship" material. And anyone that says you HAVE to pay to have a good time, they are wrong. I only paid my first visit and got girls naturally ever since.
If you want someone that could make a great friend, and relationship stop looking in the bars. Go around the college areas, the malls, the normal everyday places.
These women also feel lonely and just want friends, not always partners.
My two best Thai friends, I met them when they were working in a off-the-grid National Park. One is 28 and another is 35, both amazing people.
There is NOTHING wrong with going to another place looking for a partner, just don't be ill with bad intentions. Be up front, and don't lead anyone on.

Great vid! I probably fit into many of the stories that you told. I came to Thailand for a one month holiday in 2003 with about 500 bucks. I never went home. Like many, I taught English, lived in a cheap condo, and went out almost every night to the bars. 20 years later, I have been very happily married for 18 years to a great Thai woman and have a wonderful 17 year old daughter about to go to university in Australia. It worked out for me. And believe me not because I am anything special. Far from it. It worked out for me for one reason only. Two weeks after I arrived, after going out and getting drunk every night, I decided that if I was going to stay in Thailand, I couldn't drink. I could still go out to bars and all that, but I couldn't drink alcohol. I could see very clearly what was going to happen to me if I continued to drink while in Thailand. I took myself off to a AA group (amazing bunch of guys all of which do not drink - no chance of ever getting lonely and automatic group of friends who you can hit the bars with and drink "nam soda."). For me, I know beyond any doubt that decision not to drink radically changed my destiny in Thailand. You don't need to consider yourself an alcoholic (I never really drank that much) to stop drinking and enjoy the destiny-changing benefits. Being sober in Thailand makes for a VERY different experience. During the last 20 years, I have seen this again and again. For me (and I have noticed with many others) even a couple of beers was enough to screw things up. There is something about the mixture of the freedom in Thailand, the women, and alcohol (no matter how much) that seems to be a recipe for disaster for many. My wife said that the thing that really attracted her to me was that I did not drink. Even before I met my wife, I noticed that I was attracting a different type of Thai woman by not drinking. The ones that were attracted to me because I didn't drink just seemed to be of a better character. Whereas sometimes, a Thai girl (usually a bar girl) would get really angry that I didn't drink. I found that very strange at first but then a Thai female friend told me that they knew that if I was sober I was not an easy mark as well as the Buddhist idea that a non-drinker is a good person and they didn't like the karmic repercussions of scamming a "good person." Anyway, if you are staying in Thailand, at least consider giving up the booze. You'll be amazed. Cheers.

Since I moved here over a year ago I've made the acquaintance of few western men well beyond their fifties, all decent and sober and constantly accompanied by their equally old Thai wives. So yes let's not stereotype. Not everyone here is a "tourist".
You got to be realistic 20 to25 year old girl only goes with a 60 to 65 year old man for one thing MONEY you can't blame them that's the way it is here but these men think it's a trophy on thier arm and builds them up to o ly one thing looking stupid
I just spent Friday and Saturday night in Patts and it wasn’t for me. I am here until September travelling here and there looking to find a longer term place to just enjoy everyday life in Thailand. I am in Hua Hin now and it has made a good first impression.

You are absolutely right. People go to Pattaya or Soi Cowboy expecting and seeing the tourist holding hands with the woman 30-40 years younger and scream - “That proves my point!”. What they need to do is drive an hour outside Bangkok and observe the Thai-western couples in Big C. They are normal happy married families.

I think Thailand itself is a easy place to fall in love with just due the variety of lifestyles you can have here. Me though I watched a lot of CZcams and listen to a lot of stories and done my research before moving here. And sorted out my own issues prior to coming. As unless you sort out your past issues before coming they just follow you. And when you are going to date here be clear on your head what are you coming here for, fun or relationships. I think Nana is one of those places you would go to party and not for a serious relationship. But you can understand why guys do fall for these girls as they can be very charming from the stories I have heard, and also they are generally dressed all sexy which lures allot of guys in who now as you said think they are a 10 now. Going to these places is a big boost to some people’s egos.
Take a look at 'Thailand Bound's cartoon featuring 'Nat'. That cartoon should be compulsory viewing for all males before entering Thailand!

There used to be a newspaper columnist and blogger who had the rather unfortunate name of The Bangkok Stickman, and as a side gig he would work as a private investigator doing background checks on woman for expats who were considering marriage. I'm sure such a service still exists, or maybe The Stickman is still working? He was an insightful and colourful blogger, I do have to say. I'm glad I didn't plunge into the aspect of Thai living, it all looked too sketchy for my liking. Interesting upload, thanks for the video, Pat.

I read Stickman heavily before coming to Thailand, so I felt well prepared for the hustle from his blogs, and my own ex, who could put a bar girl to shame with her reasons for needing my money, even after the divorce. Still, I have helped a few Thai girls out. Nothing outrageous, and absolutely no expectations. Never been disappointed.

(I could be mistaken) I used to read Trink back in the 90's .. it was a hilarious column recounting his weekend journeys through the red lights... but heard horrible things about the man himself. Hi Pat. I watched live that clip on Good Morning Britain where Philip Schofield criticised a man for travelling regularly to Thailand without telling his wife in the UK. Yes, I thought at the time that Schofield was being a hypocrite here considering his "coming out" experience and his recent brother's trial, where he has now disowned his brother, rather than supporting him, in order probably to protect his TV career ! Some good lessons here, Pat, for western men looking for a relationship in Thailand, without getting scammed ! 👍

It's easy to get the two words love and lust mixed up in Thailand. The lonely Farang needs to have a strong awareness of this. Those two words can easily get confused in ones "head" when sorting out ones passionate feelings 😅 !

They really aren't any more dodgy than the women back home, they are a little better at hiding it though.
Here's a thing though, Thailand is like speed dating. Even when I was in the market for a girl I would rarely meet someone and if that didn't go well it could easily be a year before the next opportunity came along. If you're in Bangkok or Pattaya there's infinite opportunity but limited time. You are probably going to end up making a rushed decision.

There’s another question you might be asking of western men. Why would they want to get married in a western country, when everything is stacked against them legally.
Family Court, divorce Court, Children’s Court, alimony. It all goes against the man in 95% of the cases.
And the government takes the women’s side. I saw something about marriage in America, a divorce attorney said “marriage is the worst business deal a man will ever make.”
When I lived in Sweden, American girls would come to Stockholm and complain. They were too many beautiful Swedish girls. When it doesn’t go their way they say it’s unfair.
Another western male that has been burned I take it. Go where you will and find love, no jealousy here. Not our fault the govt takes the women side in the US. I've never been married and not a huge fan either.

Thai women are amazing and you can find real love in Thailand but don't look for it in the gogo bars and with a bar girl. There you can only find short time good company and sex. There may be exceptions but generally women in that industry want your money and will struggle with pair bonding. If you want a Thai woman with values and a good heart it will take a little effort and knowing a little Thai will help too.
Difficult question. Maybe too old, too fat or unstable job or no job, no savings, backpackers on a budget. Good quality women look for good quality men. How many good quality western men are in Thailand. Not many
