Bangkok's Sathorn district is full of stuff you won't find in tourist areas ....it has been Bangkok's most prestigious district for many years. Also many historical events in Sathorn have shaped the way Bangkok has evolved into the modern metropolis it is today. I took a walk down the first part of Sath...

Strong memory of the (former) Aussie Embassy site. My dad worked there for a while in the Commerce Section, later he became an executive at Supalai. The land deal took place long after he retired from working, but shortly before he passed away and before the embassy was to be demolished, he and other former embassy staff were invited to a farewell tour of the building. Now I work in a building next to Chong Nonsi BTS station but haven't ventured out to explore the area in earnest. I ride a bicycle to work (20-40 km per day) and the bike lane, while not perfect, is better than nothing.

Pat the burial cemetery for the Muslims that live in the Surasak area is still currently used. The burial ground is at water level after digging the ground so the bodies completely decompose as they only use a sheet to wrap the bodies. After a time the grave site is used over again. The grave markers are only wood.. When the grass gets long have to take care the snakes are dangerous. People have been bitten. I have come across a few. We stay at the Sathorn Soi Saint Louis Apartments close to the graveyard. Sadly many of the young Thais are been displaced as New condos built forceing the Thais to live on the outer areas due to the rents and general living costs.

Usually the shadiest and most aggressive people that I see in Bangkok are westerners and the Africans trying to sell you drugs. Not saying that there aren't shady Thai people because of course there are. Why come to SE Asia to just hang with the same people that you would in your home country? It doesn't make sense. And wanting to be left alone simply means that you want to be left alone. People trying to read between the lines like you have something to hide when you just want to be left alone like that is supposed to be something unusual. Those are the people who tend to have something to hide and the best way for them to hide it is to mingle within the crowds and pretend.

I first landed in Bangkok in 1985, at Don Duang. In 2009 I moved into an apartment in Lak Si and lived there for 15 years. In all of those those years I only saw a handful of tourists, so yes, it is a quiet village in that respect. However, in my opinion, with the development of the Red Line and the Bar/Restaurant area around Changwattana Soi 14, Lak Si is now Bangkok's best kept secret.
