- Nana is not just a sleazy area full of dodgy foreign sex pests, freelancers, street markets and touts. That’s the stereotype some have in mind. I've been exploring this area extensively to bring you a unique documentary on a place that is unpredictable, unusual but also being modernised. If you scratch the surface you’ll find interesting stories, history, characters, places, and of course the unexpected.

A Chinese woman who came to make content in Thailand that made Thailand's reputation to be disreputable was arrested and prosecuted and was expelled from the Kingdom from entering Thailand for life.
@@user-wt5zs4vt4v This is the recent woman who went to Nana?
@@BangkokPat Yes, that's right.
@@user-wt5zs4vt4vHow much for short time?
@@BangkokPat I really hate Thailand street names are all Sukhumvit, really dumb .
Also in Cambodia, all the street names are just numbers .
First visited Nana after my divorce and was reduced to tears learning that the Nana working girls showed me more respect than I’d felt in years.
Give them more money than your missus?
@@smrriles5668 what is wrong with you?
Thai ladies are respectful beings. You were with a wrong person.

Staying in Nana right now for a couple of weeks. Been coming here occasionally since 1987. It’s like the crossroads of the world at Sukhumvit Soi 4 and Sukhumvit Road. People out having a good time and enjoying their lives - the way it should be. Love seeing the geezers like myself partying until the lights go out. No, it’s not for everyone, but it is what it is, and it does it very well. Long live Nana and Bangkok in general. What a marvelous city!
The old Thermae was great. I remember having to enter down a stairwell and through a back door that led through the kitchen and past the rest room which was used by both men and women. Cops used to drink in there but went out of their way to greet you and assure you that they were non-threatening. I also remember the girls being really friendly. 😉
Don't forget the popcorn.
This sounds incredible. How long ago did you experience that?
This was in 1982 but it had been operating that way for awhile as I understood it.
First visit in 1986 and still in LOS. I'd say that the fun, intrigue and excitement has gone, but in 10 years' time, today's first timers will say it's ruined. It's all about memories.
The scene is so bland and predictable nowadays.
I stayed in the Nana area. I had no problems. My advice to everyone. Just love life and embrace Thailand 🇹🇭 for why we love this country so much ❤️
Well said 😊👍🏼
Thank you Pat for all the hard work and content you have provided this year, it is much loved and appreciated. Merry Christmas to you and May, see you next year.
Thank you very much and hope you have a great Xmas😻
Top quality video by a man who knows his stuff and narrated at a pace everybody can understand. The magic of Bangkok.
Thanks very much! With a name like that, you may be fond of the feline stars of my videos....
What a great Vid about a great area of Bangers. Thermae was My favourite after Bar closing time hangout from 1985 till getting married in 1998. The old one was low roofed and quite smokey back in the day, back-end toilet entry was bizarre. We would get a room at the Miami for 220 baht in 94 with no toilet or shower, I remember jumping off 3rd floor balcony into the pool at 4 in the morning one night, picked up the most beautiful Women there during the off peak season. Looking at the book, might have My DNA on the patch. thank you very much for some great memories and your great presentation, have a great Christmas Pat.
Oh dear so many memories from my time working as an English teacher and spending the best years of my life in the 1980s between Soi 22 where I lived and Soi 1 to Soi 4. The work you have put into this video is amazing thanks. I will be returning next month month to see the changes.
Cheers John you could be in for a few surprises!
Great video. I've been living in Thailand since the early 90's and vaguely remember the original Thermae, which I thought was a bit of a dump. As a young English teacher, Nana could be fun back then, especially if you spoke Thai. By the way, anyone who thinks the Nana area is unsafe probaby ought to stay at home, hiding under the bed. Unseemly maybe, but unsafe, no.
I used to stay in
Nana area on
Soi 11... But now i prefer the area near Prom Phong for a more relaxing time. Thanks Pat for all your awesome video
The quality of these CZcams videos are just another level compared to so many CZcamsrs in Thailand at the moment... Another great video and thank you.
Thanks! Quality means nothing to the YT algorithim sadly so the struggle continues....
Pat, your vids are always well presented and edited…a pleasure to watch. I particularly enjoyed the 60’s architectural history and it’s relevance to BKK’s past. Well done, Cheers
Cheers thanks for the kind words! Merry Christmas.
I stayed at the Dynasty close by Nana Plaza in 1993 --when you could still park cars inside! Had to leave as I was just 'indulging too much' --punishing myself and my wallet! Moved out near the project and stayed near Laksi. It was quieter but still plenty of 'opportunities' with local ladies! Ah, such issues ha ha! Good vlog Pat.
Oh the "Dynasty" stayed there many times back in the early 1990s. Good memories
Stayed during renovation of Dynasty in 2002. Was quite nice.
Award winning video. As a female, Nana was my introduction to freedom from my restricted life in Australia back in 2005. Lots of party nights listening and dancing to Thai bands playing classic rock. So much fun. I'm still in Thailand today helping street animals in Phe, Rayong. This well researched video brought back wonderful memories of why I stayed in Thailand and decided to give a little back what The Kingdom gave to me.
Thanks Michelle, glad it brought back great memories😻🐱
Just returned from 2.5 months in Thailand. I always stay on Sukhumvit Soi 11 which is barely a 5-minute walk to Soi 4 Nana. IMHO it’s the best area to stay in Bangkok. It has everything. Sitting on an afternoon in Kick Off bar adjacent to Nana Plaza, cold one in your hand, watching the world pass you by. Eating noodles from the street cart out front for 50Baht (one of the best in Bangkok) whilst chatting to some complete stranger from another part of the world. I have met people there who remain good friends to this day and we meet up every time I visit. Nana is so much more than the Plaza.
Another excellent video Pat. Who doesn't have fond memories of the Nana Hotel disco.😊
I saw you filming on the corner of Soi 3 - was too late before it realized it was you - so thanks for the videos is what I wish I said as I walked past.
I like to film from the besr vantage points... You should have said Hi..
As always fantastic narration. Great video and “ yes” the police should do more and get rid of the dodgy guys around Sukhumvit 11. It’s bad for tourism
This one was definitely brilliant. You even elucidated the real location for the Serpent, Sala Daeng not Nana! I always thought it was Khao San area as he was dealing with Backpackers. Thank you very much for this great video!
During his time Khao San wasn't a backpacker area, he would have gone to Soi Si Bamphen or Hua Lamphong in those days.
I remember reading the book, _Serpentine_ in the ‘70’s. I never saw the movie; the book was horrifying enough. From what I understand, he’s still in prison (not sure where), he’s in solitary confinement, and nobody - not even the guards - are allowed to talk to him, ever.
@@JeddieTI think he was released last year
Piece of art and history
Thanks very much Thomas, have a great Xmas.
Great video, thanks. My friend Alex and his wife Na had a bar in Sukhumvit Soi 10 that was destroyed on that fateful night. They can be seen briefly at 36.48 looking for personal possessions.
Sad to hear that, l know the couple you are talking about in the video. Very sad.
Great video as always. My favorite thing about Nana is the sound of "next station, NANAAAAA" on the BTS
i took my fist step into Thermae -88, into an back alley & and then enter via the toilets, kitchen & down the stairs to what would become my go to place for some years, i got to know the owners & staff, Uan, Som Chai, the waiter "Pom poei who always had a glas at our table and gave us free ice 555 and was as some of the other staff, a police sergeant, the deaf girls who offered massage by the table, the old Fortune teller lady. Thermae was an icon, it really never was the same after the move from soi 13
My favorite video so far. I first went to Nana in 1990. I'd have to agree with your friend. All the changes are enough to make you cry.
great video Pat... I first visited nana in 1998,,, after reading the " beach " .. I was 23.. I quickly relocated from koa san to " nana tai mansions " it was wonderful, there was a big internet cafe in nana hotel ......The girls were all trim and no tattoos. I think our generation are the last of the real wild men, the young men today seem very very tame. I can remember boom booming in a go go.. Can you remember the " star of light " in Patpong.. Im serious, I feel Nana should be made a Unesco world heritage site. Merry christmas
Star of Light is still open! I remember those days after the Beach made Thailand popular!
Wonderful film about an iconic Bangkok neighborhood. Cheers
Glad to see The Game is still operating.
Couldn't help but notice the old Holdens in the video from the 60s and 70s.
Yet another awesome video Pat. You never disappoint. Love seeing the old pictures of lower Sukhumvit
its nice to see the old pictures from the 80's and 90's i wish i had visited back then, good vid pat
Cheers Arthur😎
The Miami Hotel! Still there.A building that exudes legendary status.
Great one as always.
Thanks Adam. Arab quarter great for food. Petra reataurant are a great bunch of guys! Happy Xmas 😻
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you as well. Just say the word and we'll swing over to Arab quarter to meet for a bite- got a few hidden gems in there you might appreciate.@@BangkokPat
"Don't get in the news" profound words of wisdom.
Free wifi and smart phones have spoiled the massage / beach experiences in Pattaya /Jomtien. You have people talking to friends back home, even watching TV shows etc without bothering with headphones. Bangkok was fantastic 25 years ago. Now when I leave the airport, the taxi turns right and heads for the coast.
If you answer honestly, how much of that is because you cannot afford or justify Bangkok pricing ?
Bangkok Pat's videos are historical records of places and times that will be viewed for a long time. Well done.
The 'Amazing' Grace hotel and Thermae coffee shops were the main freelancer venues in the 1970s/80s. The original Thermae was likened to the Star Wars cantina in Bos Eisley: "Nowhere else will you find such a hive of scum and villainy; we must be cautious". Now slightly relocated, it is the hangout of single-mums seeking the triple 4s from Japanese and Korean tourists: 4 inches, 4 minutes and 4 thousand.
Thanks for that lovely bit of info Trevor, the triple 4's is a new one to me....
Thank you 4 bring back memory of Soi 1 to Soi 21, which I use to frequent from the early 90. It still a great place to remember. They had great Indian food in Soi 3. Use to live in Soi 10 for month. Never short of great Western food. And of course the great seafood. Which now had gone now. I still go to BKK. If I am around town . I drop by Soi nana for western food n couple of drink. Thank you for bring all of BKK. Great Job 👍 👌
Dude these videos are awesome, the research it must take, i dunno where you find the time. Well done and keep it up. Gr8 to have a true videographer NOT focusing on the bad and the seedy.
Cheers thank you very much, gotta be thorough as I always say. Get as much footage of everything you'll ever need is my motto.
Without doubt my favorite Thailand Vlog. Exceptional work 🙏🏻
The old Thermae looked closed from the front you had to go around the back to enter ,I was greeted by the sight of a Thai policeman throwing up once. When you went in and saw the crowd drinking and smoking, it was like entering a speakeasy during prohibition.
Great description, thankfully I can't picture the scene as it was before my time....not sure if I would have ever gone!
Absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Thanks
This channel is so unique and different, always interesting and educational. Cheers Pat
Loved all the historical photos. Went to Nana probably around 25 times from 2006-2019. Used to love the club in Nana Hotel downstairs where they had a live hip hop band around 2010-2012.
I never knew the Set for the Serpent Movie was at the end of Soi 4. I was just in BKK and I stayed in Nana Area and I would have loved to visit the Movie Set. Also, I heard of the Atlanta Hotel but I had no idea where it was. On my next visit I will be sure to go to these two places. Great Vid Pat, you always do great work !
Thanks Bradley 😎
It was about 4am in NY City and I’d thought I’d watch 5-or-so-minutes be for getting some winks. Now it’s only a few minutes from 5am, I’ve watched the whole video, I enjoyed every minute of it, and didn’t want it to end. Thank you so much Pat. Beautiful video.
😍 Thank you @JeddieT 🙏😊 and good morning 😊😊
I love BKK and I embrace all the characteristics of BKK, including the improvement on infrastructure, public transport, gentrification of street, the hustle of street hawkers, the sleaze, the lady boys and the hookers.
Mind you, I come from Singapore and I find peace in BKK….. lol
Me too. An open mind is hard to come by, still in this day and age 😁
Frohe Weihnachten für Dich und Deine Frau und dickes Dankeschön für ein weiteres interessants Video aus Deiner schönen Stadt!
🎄
Thank you very much! Same to you😻
As one of the old guys who saw Nana in the 80s and 90s I can confirm it has gone downhill in many ways. As for younger or more recently arrived visitors who think more experienced guys like me are just moaning all I can say is, I was there. You weren’t. I feel sorry for you. The fun I had seems almost unimaginable today.
Same. Hung out there in the late 80s-early 90s. Went back a few years ago and it was just dull and soulless.
Started going in 1973 came back last week was so much fun in the 70’s to 80’s the crazy times on Pat Pong road will never be forgotten.
I think that's generally the case everywhere. I grew up in the 80s so I'm younger than you and I have no clue what Thailand was like then but back home things have changed for the worse and people who experienced the 80s are grateful they got to do so. "development" comes at a price. Modern tech and trends (even music and architecture) is soulless, cookie cutter, unexciting, etc... Younger people now will tell you how you're just old and can't adapt but as you said, they weren't there. Because they didn't experience it they can't fathom how things were better.
Thanks Pat, another great historical video
Cheap Charlie’s, bed, supper club, Q Bar. Those were the days. Early 2000s to 2012 were are my golden years.👍🙏 I live here now 🤸♀️Great vlog. Thanks Pat 👍🙏
Cheers Dave, a better era, nowadays it's all so predictable and bland.
Never set foot in Thailand until 2015. I was 62 years old. Thanks for footage from the past.
I’m Thai and enjoyed Pat’s channel. Well I’ve been around since Vietnam War when I was a kid then but witnessing generations of foreigners esp westerners ‘falling in love’ with people here and places. Thais around you should seem to be nice and easy going. We are but we need to eat and live. Some Thais might have over ten mouths to feed back in their hometowns. Be careful if they are very nice to you as you might look cute or look rich. If you come here with past life issues and bruises, be extremely careful. People here might smile or being very nice expecting money in your pockets (that you might or might not have).
Another tremendous video Pat. You’ve outdone yourself with this one! Love it!
When i was 19 (37 years ago) i arrived in bangkok , these were the days we arrived on a one way ticket with a few hundred buck and winged it from there. I met 2 young friendly girls who got me a cheap room at their place. They were very protective and really looked after me like big sisters teaching me the ways of thailand. They were bar girls and being naive i thought they were bar tenders. They really were like big sisters and they had one request, i stay away from bars and the girls there. I didnt understand why but did as they asked. They knew i was not the sort of boy then that could protect himself from highly skilled predatory bar girls so they protected me. 30 years later i learned why in Phuket. They were good girls who cried when i left a year later and gave me amulets to protect me that started my obsession with phrakrung. I think about my pretty insect muching protectors to this day and always ask the bodhisattva to protect them....and i have still never been to Nanas.
where did you move to then? what was the reason if i amy ask?
Interesting story which probably would not happen these days. Did you ever keep in touch with them?
Good story!
Some good memories there!
Glad to hear it Paul😎
Great video! Love it. Bringing back great memories. In 1987 was my first trip to Thailand. I took part of all changes in Bangkok over the years. Miss the good old times but love the modern Bangkok either.
🙏
This is how u make a vlog❤
Thanks for posting, I have been a regular visitor to Bangkok since 1979. I was there this year in February. One hotel which has not changed and let’s hope never will is the Atlanta Soi 2. Sadly on this occasion I did not meet any of the original staff many whom I have known since 79. It appears due to the covid shutdown many chose to retire. Back in the day the old Thermae was a lively meeting place with “stairway to heaven” on the juke box, sadly now just a pick up place. Another hotel I used to frequent The Rex Sukhumvit and the nearby Santisok Post office, both now gone with a new complex under construction to cover the entire block. The Sukhumvit crown was another favourite hotel, great atmosphere, I did not find it this time. One more memory the historic Erewan Hotel now replaced by the The Grand Hyatt. For the past 20 years I am more comfortable in Jakarta.
I too frequented the "Rex hotel" very often back in the early 1980s. It had a very good coffee shop that served an amazing orange juice hat I have never been able to find anywhere since. The food I found to be top notch too
Covered the Rex Hotel in a Vanishing Bangkok episode. Even dossed there myself for a night 16yrs ago!
The Crown has a completely different look and name now. The only way I could be certain that it was the same place was by entering through the vehicle entrance facing Sukhumvit Rd near the corner of Soi 29. Once you walk in there you'll enter the courtyard that I'm sure you'll remember. I was in one of those little cabin rooms at the back of the courtyard in 1981.
Having lived here now for 22 years I find it a wonderful nostalgic trip back in time watching your videos. Thanks
So glad to know that Christopher G. Moore is still around. He wrote some classics for those of us who love Bangkok.
Awesome Video Pat ....My first trips to BKK were around 1992 & it was like a Flashback in time ...your dives into history of BKK are fasinating....really appreciated.

Been here 20 years Nana will always hold a special place in my heart...so many good times, thank you Pat for stirring up good old memories❤
I never lived near Nana but visited friends there often, long ago - thank you for a retracing of time.
I am sooo glad you brought up a mention of the Atlanta Hotel.
The Atlanta has been a stable-mate to how a place can do business and not put up with any schit..
Personally I have been sitting by the pool and seen the zero tollerence of patrons over extending their beleif of how a certain decorum should be followed.
Been there many times
I had a 10 gap only to find the food was exactly the sama and the atmosphere was stil as brilliant as remembereed.
Good music , as well. Very watchable.
Cheers Billy, happy Christmas!
Wow Pat. you have outdone yourself with this documentary. I hope you get a million views.
Merry Christmas Pat. I was a newbie in 2010 on my first trip to Thailand and picked a hotel out of random. The Omni Tower. First night out I stumbled upon the Stumble Inn and Nana Plaza. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven at the age of 50. Now my Thailand trips are up country with my Thai wife of 8 years. Always looking forward to your stories of Bangkok past, present, and future.
I appreciate your comprehensive attention to detail and the time spent looking up old clips and info.
Had a bar in soi zero in the early 200s. Loved in nana condo. The only city in the world i could live in. Loved every minute of living there
My friend Alex and his wife Na also had a bar in Soi Zero. Later, after divorce, she had her own bar there.
Great video! I lived in soi 8 late 90s for a few years. So glad you mentioned soi zero, it certainly wasn't flash, but great fun with a few diamonds in the rough!
Glad you enjoyed it Steve, cheers! 😎
Pat you deserve an Oscar for your Documentary quality, you are a talented Storyteller, l hope more people would boost your Subscribers 👍
What a great christmas present of a video. Thanks! If I had only one ticket in a time machine, I would go to Bangkok in the early 70s.
Before the riffraff arrived....
Thanks Pat, One of your best. I know it's a lot of work but know that it's appreciated and I do find this 40 odd min format the best. Seeing all the old photos is truely amazing, to think how much has changed in half a lifetime is truely incredible. I was thinking that when you show one of those old street photos it would be great to get a current image from the same spot. It would just highlight the extent of the change. Thanks again
I love how every intricacy is given to the video, somehow i watched many youtubers, but they lack subtlety in some aspects.Real and unfiltered stories are always the gem in YT.Happy holidays Pat
Another great video! I really enjoyed it, as I lived on Sukhumvit Soi 31 back in the early 1990's, went to school in Sukhumvit Soi 15, and Boxed out of Sukhumvit Soi 36; and up until COVID-19, I used to preach the gospel on Sukhumvit Soi 3/1, Sukhumvit Soi 3, and Sukhumvit Soi 4. For better or worse, so much has changed in that area in just a short time. Thank you, once again, for the great video and trip down memory lane.

I love seeing the old footage and how it compares with present day. An interesting video Pat, really enjoyed it
Great video as always! Btw, after I watched the Serpent I was staying in Bangkok at the Evergreen Laurel Hotel on North Sathon Road and realized the original location of Kanit House was just up the street a few sois off Sathon. I gave it a wide berth!!
Pat. You really make interesting, high quality and informative videos. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Walter!
Great episode Pat 👍
I love the place 🍻 👧 🎉
It's a shame the rooms at the Atlanta aren't as nice as the entrance, front desk and restaurant with its art deco decor. The rooms are very simple, and not much different than rooms seen around Khaosan. Nice video, as always. Cheers.
Yes, rooms are spartan to say the least......no self respecting sex tourist would bother with the place.
Is it true that there are no bum guns in the en suite toilets in the Atlanta?
basic, but is clean, great value, always sleep well in the non AC rooms on the top floor
There’s no TV, there’s no fridge, no free water and you need to bring your own padlock for the ‘safe’ (the padlock can be purchased from the proprietor). I’m not a bum gun user so not sure on that one. They have at least renovated the pool lately which would be the first one in 60 years.
Agree that the price was cheap
Fantastic video mate. Lots of good old memories of Soi 11 including Cheap Charlies, Suk 11 and the awesome restaurant at the Federal Hotel!
I first moved to Thailand in 2001. I lived in Siam Court at the end of Soi 4 (Nana). What a crazy year that was. LOL I used to walk through that Nana madness everyday and night no matter where I went, I had to get to Sukhumvit to start out. Yes, good times!
You could have gone via Soi 6!!
Nice Christmas present! Thank you
I love the walk back in time, through Thermae, zero, Sois around Nana and the fact that I have known it more than half my life.
Thanks and if you're in town when I'm around, I'd love to share a couple of beers.
Walked Nana at midnight, safe , crossing the street , bit dodgy, never seen a street fight, people are great and the street food is delicious..yes the taxis are a rip off , so I used the trains alot...love Thailand
Another good video Pat, well done. Maybe another episode to cover more of the Soi's of Sukumvit rd.❤
That's a lot of work Max, but one day....
Loved it. A trip down memory lane. I started at the Atlanta as a backpacker in the mid 90s when old Dr Henn was still around. I found soi 4, bought a copy of A Killing Smile at Asia Books on Sukumvit Road, discovered the Thermae and shifted base to the Miami when Dr Henn was no longer around and the Atlanta became less liberal. I lived in Bangkok for a couple of years and was a regular at the infamous Cat House in the plaza during it's heyday early in the century. Was last there in 2022 and still love the feel out on the street. Thanks Pat, made my day.
Great memories flooding back. Your best yet. ( I keep saying that!)
Thanks very much, glad this invoked a bit of nostalgia for you!!
The restaurants in this area are the star attraction here. The Indian eateries in this area are first-rate. Any kind of cuisine you want can be found here.
Fitzgerald's Irish pub is also really good (previously Hanrahan's).
Can't fault the food on offer around Nana.
Saw the man in Terminal 21 à gentleman he is reel love the history, the old clips and photos keep the good work we learn a lot Thanks
Thanks and nice to meet you too, glad you like the history and canals, have a great evening and a happy new year!
Love all you great old videos and photos

I enjoy your videos because we always learn something new and also because I highlight all the spots you visit for my next trip to Bangkok 🎉 Hopefully in spring
ขอบคุณ kah 🙏
Thanks! There are a few Thais who watch but I think not many 😃
True words, same same for me. I mention this channel to anyone who has any interest in Bangkok.
Thanks Pat. I have been going to Nana/Sukhumvit for 25 odd years and this December my wife and I took our three kids for their first taste of Bangkok. We loved it, it’s a great experience of one kind of Thai experience and as safe as houses. We had a ball and can’t wait to
go back. Merry Xmas, happy New Year
Thanks very much for the support, and merry xmas😎😻
I just placed and ordered 2 special edition of “A Killing Smile” Thanks for the opportunity
Good to hear that! You won't be disappointed.
great coverage of nana. loved the historical parts in your clip. back then i managed to buy the wooden sign of suk11 “stupid guys destroyed our woods” which was hanging next to the reception from the guard who took care of a garage sale before demolition. still staying in the atlanta and the ambassador from time to time due the glorious vibe. in case you need photos of the 2008-2018 era drop me a line. …and keep up the good work!
I was there in 1988,it was more laid back then, last time I was in Nana was 2010.Love your video, made my day.
