Could you just cut a thin slice of the sprue from the tree if we are using hydrogen/oxygen? Or is it too risky?

A Hydrogen/ Oxygen mix is not considered a “cutting torch” gas mix whereas the heat achieved by a Acetylene/oxygen mix could be. That said, I do not recommend trying to do that as by the time you got the heavier spruce temperature to the melting temperature, your thinner parts of the tree would melt without heat sinking them but then you would need to apply MORE heat and oxygen to compensate for that factor . Then you also get to such a high oxygen mix and temperature that you can “burn” the alloys in the metal and render your metal unusable until refined or you will increase your chance of having a lot of porosity, pits! . And BTW, a “slice” of metal is never actually possible, a melted drop of metal is how it would come off the sprue when the temperature is reached.
A dozen sawblades is actually a better choice! :-)
