  • Students in the GIA Graduate Jeweler diploma program learn hands-on how to work with gemstones and precious metals such as platinum, taking projects from castings to finished, set, and polished pieces. GIA’s quality assurance benchmarks enable students to evaluate and improve their workmanship as they develop skills including hand-fabrication; forging; soldering and laser welding; setting gemstones; and applying textured and polished finishes to jewelry surfaces, all while working at their own ergonomic workbench. This video provides a snapshot of one class project; to learn more, visit our program website at www.gia.edu/gem...

Hi Lucian: We are not aware of jewelry made with osmium or with a platinum and osmium alloy combination. Osmium is regarded as toxic and has a higher melting point compared to platinum. It is also brittle and uncharacteristically hard which makes it unworkable. It is not compatible with jewelry making methods or jewelry making tools. Another resource for information about platinum group metals is Platinum Guild International. Their website is www.platinumguild.com
