    I’ve learnt more from watching CZcams videos and reading books than I did on a 10-week silversmithing course at my local college. There was only one tutor and about 10-12 newbies and 4-6 grad students who came in to use the equipment and consult with the tutor. It was very difficult getting any one-on-one time with her because I’m not good at asserting myself and elbowing my way in and most of the other students and grads were selfish in their approach to hogging her time. If ever I got stuck with soldering or something, I’d ask if she could help me when she was free and she said “yes sure” and then she’d be finishing with one student and about to come with me and another would barge in and grab her attention. I got annoyed that she would never assert herself and say “I’ll be with you in a minute, Alison asked first”. Anyhoo, I lover jewellery making and your videos are a great help, thanks. Perhaps I was just unlucky with the course I chose.

    So I am currently 6 months in a 2 years fine jewellery course and although home practice is so important to really master the techniques, the ability to use professional tools of a fully equipped studio is unvaluable. Getting corrected and being explained your mistakes is also a great chance. I am doing my school in Portugal so it is a lot cheaper than studying in France or Italy yet they have a great culture of jewellery making. I appreciate learning with brass first, then silver then eventually gold and platinum. Cause I don't want to learn on a precious metal. Home practice is important especially to develop your own style but going to school or doing an apprenticeship are a lot better.

      Excellent points!! Couldn't agree more! That really is the ideal situation - having both if you can!! And yes learning with brass or copper is an excellent plan and then move on to silver and then gold and platinum later. Wishing you so much luck and fun on the course. 🤗

    Hiya Megan, nice looking backdrop. I've been buying tools my whole working life, since the mid-70s', it ain't cheap. There is always that latest do-dad that will do the job in half the time, it hardly ever does though. I started a jewellery course at the local college after I was disabled but did not get on then health problems caused me to stop. The teacher was a sculptor who had some knowledge of working with fine metals but I learned a lot more from books and then YT, most especially when I found Stardust Mine and now Megan. Yes, there were others too. I like learning from people online who earn the money for their daily bread from their work. They seem to have a better understanding of where I'm coming from, and want to go. A lot of the basic skills I already had from being an electrition, soldering, sawing, filing etc. But fine-tuning those skills, and learning the whole subject of marketing, very much a horse of a different colour. Bookkeeping I already knew, but pricing? Wow! Thank you, ladies. There is a wealth of information out there, more than ever before, its a case of finding teachers who fit your style, and budget, some are very expensive, and going forward. My health problems make it difficult to follow a set routine, so DIY with online teachers like Megan fits me perfectly. If you can please support Megan on Patreon, she started helping us and doing these videos off her own bat with no help, supplying the camera, microphones, editing software out of her own purse, never cheap, so it's good to give back to her. Plus of cause, she is sharing the knowledge she could and should sell for a lot. Even if her wonderful style only inspires your designs and encourages your work growth, say thank you back. Subscribe, like her videos, she deserves something back from us!!!
    Stay safe, Steve...

      Hello Steve, thank you so much for your very kind message and the support it is really appreciated! Thanks for sharing your learning story, super interesting to find out more about where it all began for different people. For me the filing and sewing and cutting skills with something I learnt as a child growing up with my dad but then perfecting the silversmithing jewellery skills was just taking it to the next level and improving on my detailed work. And I have always loved tiny little things and being very hands-on. Building a collection of tools is a lifelong goal but also so making use of what you have is good too. Wishing you a wonderful week ahead and thanks so much again for signing up to my patreon!! We will be releasing the content soon! ;) Keep well, Megan

    I started researching and practicing at home home just so I had a better understanding of what were my weak points and I needed more help. This way, when I started to get proper education I knew what questions to ask and what techniques I had to put more effort into learning better. But I invested heavily in my work station and tools before starting, something that could have been a problem if I didn't enjoy it so much lol

    Hi there Megan! Thanks for the mention, I was really surprised 😍 Yes it has been great for me to learn from a master, I started at a later age and I wanted to save time learning from a master where I can grasp the gist of 30-40 years experience😄 I have also learnt the business side too, how the system works etc… it has worked well for me, I also read a lot, watch youtube videos and do a lot of research on specific things that I want to make… I always keep learning🤷‍♀️

      You're welcome! It made sense to give you a mention as it is another option as well, and a very good one indeed! Learning from someone with that much experience is a great way to to speed up your learning and for that learning to be relevant to your country! X

    Comment (love to support your channel Megan); I am self taught, and refused to sell until I actually had some real time experience under my belt. Also, teaching...not for a long time; I am not impressed with the blind leading the blind - there's wayyyy too much of that on CZcams. Imagine trying something for the first time, filming it and calling it a tutorial? Ack! A good foundation of skill which takes lots of practice is definitely the way to quality and ultimately sales and happy clients. Singing to the choir, I'm sure! 😍

    • @megan.collins
      @megan.collins  Před rokem

      I totally hear you! But sometimes we can get into a state of seeking perfection, and constantly wanting to learn more before we allow ourselves to start selling. And this can sometimes be the reason why so many super talented jewellery designers are still scared to sell their gorgeous jewellery. I am by no means suggesting that you take 1 lesson and then go out there and sell your jewellery. It's all about balance really. ☺️
