I bought a cheap Chinese mini lathe for making spacers and other small parts. I had to make a lot of adjustments and modifications straight out of the box to make it as accurate as possible and for what I use it for. It works pretty well, and it doesn't take up that much space. If you're looking for a high precision tool, this is not the lathe, but for spacers, it works great.
I can just about work an air fryer so a lathe would be a rather odd talking point in the lounge 😂
I was going to buy a new lathe but got a air fryer now I make chicken wings and work on my bikes

Still on my list of tools to obtain, just need to make room. Yeah, we were lucky to have metal shop when I was in high school and I was able to use a lathe amongst other tools. I still have the little metal hammer I made. That was over 40 years ago too! We also had a work experience class, where instead of taking physical education, you got to go learn a trade. I got to take a motorcycle mechanics class back then too. Oh yeah, a welder is on the list as well, a lathe will be first though, I've had a need for a lathe more than the need for a welder.
You're dead right there Sir, we were the lucky generation to have a metal shop at school, not just that but our school had a wood shop and a pottery class as well, hand skills were more valued back then I guess!
Definitely, yes.😊 Plus, I have made myself a small foundry where i can melt aluminum to sand cast my metal blanks. I have found the plans in Dave Gingery books. I would say as well that a small milling machine is the logical complement of a lathe.
Oh if only I had the room. Back in the late 60s I worked in a machine shop for a couple of weeks helping machine setters. I can only just fit my Sport Glide into my w/shop. Great video as always Del. My w/end always starts with a visit to your workshop. Have a great one.

This is my first time commenting on your excellent CZcams channel. I am old enough and lucky enough to have had Metal Shop and Auto Shop in high school. These programs should, IMO, be protected in the school systems along with art and music. I have been wanting a lathe for a long time and eventually my budget will allow. Hi Tom, great to hear from a kindred spirit, I think we all need to consider ourselves lucky to be our generation where schools took the time to teach practical skills... not everyone's academic and it gave those of us with practical hands an opportunity to flourish... and even more sadly I think the same can be said for music in today's schools... probably reflected in the fact that modern pop music is pretty much a joke these days, no bands forming and becoming iconic anymore... Both my grandad and my uncle were engineers.
Grandad worked at Supermarine on the spitfire, and my uncle worked for Mr. Kipling, keeping all those fancies coming 😊
Dad worked in ultrasonics in the testing side of things such as welds under the sea and oil rigs.
The closest that I ever got to making a spacer was for my rat bike by welding a load of washers together and then smoothing them down with my grinder 😅

Great video! Seems like it would come in handy to have a lathe.....I have a machinist that makes me wheel spacers & crush tubes whenever I need them, but it sucks going back & forth from your garage to the machinist.
You, I and every other career mechanic out there can always justify getting another tool. Budget, shop space and a rational spouse usually keep us under control though. 😁 In your line of custom fab work a lathe is practically a must have. The care you give the machine is so nice to see also. Loved the chuck key out takes. How did Penny not bust out laughing when filming that ? I look forward to every visit with the two of you. I've always wanted a lathe… space is the only issue I have. Every machine I have is on stands that I weld and build. I only have a 2-car garage with 7 feet ceiling. I have a friend who owns a machine shop and does work for me when I need something. I wish I had something on hand as he's gone fishing! Lol, I wasn't able to find a decent used lathe like yours. I'm still 👀!!!!
Sure thing, I've been looking for a decent second hand Bridgeport or Monarch for many years, they're just not out there... maybe a Myford, but they're more expensive than a new one of these! It's always a big expense, but like they say, long after the price is forgetton the value remains...

They all went to India in the 1970's / 1980's and still working more than likely today.
One of your first videos I watched was you making a set of bar ends on the lathe and I've been hooked every since. You've inspired me to use my imagination and think out of the box on my own motorcycle repairs and upgrades. Barely a motorcycle in the video and I loved it just the same! Thank you!

Never did metalwork at school, but I did do carpentry. I would love a lathe, but better still have you to pop in and use yours!! Another great video and the outtakes were awesome :)

The Outtakes was a great idea, you should do it on all of your video's. Fluffing lines , dropping stuff , loosing your 10mm socket.
I did metalwork at school and would love to have a lathe in the garage. Only 3 problems,
1. I left school in 1971 and haven't touched a lathe since.
2. Don't have room in the garage.
3. The wife won't let me 😂
I left in 81 and hadn't used one since.. but half hour turning handles, it all made sense, and with the online content aimed at teaching such things, it will soon come back to you mate... plus the little bench top ones take up no more room than a tool box... (But sadly can't help you with The Wife though..lol!!)

I also keep a large box of liquorice all sorts, I usually find something for the job. Not necessarily pretty though!

Would I like a Lathe? Yeah probably. Good for “just in case.”
Would I use one? Prolly not a lot now I’ve finished my restorations on my old bikes.
I have used them to turn down drill shanks to fit my drill chucks. I’ve made new bolts/ screws and spacers. And other piddling bits. Plus they’re helpful to polish stuff you can stick in the jaws.
Do I have room for one? Hell no. My house has already exceeded its SWL three time over. And my Wife already moans about our garage being filled with bikes and bike related stuff.
Hang on... you turn down drill bit shanks?... that'd be useful,. i presume HSS as you can't machine Carbide....what cutting tool do you use for that ?
Dunno. I can’t remember what it was. I know it was a HSS bit. Basically I just used the cutting tool that was in the lathe .

I would LOVE a Lathe, but I simply wouldn't use it enough. I will have to make do with a drill, some files, and a pocket full of washers!

Why not make some sort of canvas cover or metal lid to protect against unwanted dust and debris getting into your lathe workings ?
It's always important to give it a clean down before use, even if it's been covered, but perhaps I'll get round to that for sure!
A subscription to Joe Pie should be compulsory, for anybody considering their first lathe!

I recommend not skipping a practical course. In my understanding, I'm guessing, the seller knew how to give the buyer a discount voucher for a special practical course on the products he sells. Above a certain level of basic machines maybe the course is free?

I bought the same lathe from machine mart at the same time as you did and have used it a lot, what you didnt mention was it weighs as much as a bus and all the "saved " bits of bar ends etc also weigh a ton!
