- russian forces have deployed a powerful ODAB-1500 bomb in Ukraine for the first time, striking the town of Velyka Pysarivka in Sumy Oblast, russian Bild reported on Telegram on March 30.
Following the ODAB-1500 strike, a smoke cloud billowed to a height of 1 kilometer, reported Bild military analyst Julian Röpcke.
The ODAB, or volumetric detonating aviation bomb, is a relic from the Soviet era. About 10 meters before impact, this bomb releases a combustible liquid in aerosol form, igniting upon contact, resulting in a volumetric explosion.

A large thermobaric bomb can be as destructive as a very low-yield nuclear warhead, with blast over-pressures equal to a low-yield nuclear bomb. Russia using these against civilians would be a war crime.

This is disgusting Anna. I'm so disappointed in the lack of coverage on many of the major western channels. Thank goodness for the like of yours and many others of it's kind. This information must be spoken about far and wide. I was appalled when I first heard about the use of this sickening weapon few days ago.
Bombs in general are horrendous, but thermobaric bombs are extremely horrendous. As you have said, the damage that one of these bombs can produce is similar to a small tactical nuclear weapon and yet these weapons have not been banned under international treaty. Thermobaric weapons should be placed under the same category as other weapons of mass destruction because they can produce the same results as other mass destruction weapons. If these weapons had been previously prohibited, it would give NATO a reason to send troops to Ukraine, but as it stands the World allows such weapons without any repercusions. I am truly sorry that Ukraine had such a weapon used against them. It should be a wake-up call to NATO that Russia is going to escalate this war and NATO needs to do more now.
Even if banned it would not make any difference as a Putin has no regard for international law and acts accordingly unfortunately.
Russia has released phosphorous bombs, the ARE banned! Nothing happend in NATO.

Actually, such technology was used by the US as far back as the Vietnam war.
I am beginning to think that the best way forward for Ukraine is to take territory in Russia. If France, and other European countries, could take over "guard" duty from Ukraine in border areas, and help in other non-combat roles, Ukraine could push into Russan oblasts such as Belgorod. This is a fully justified action considering that the Russians are using those territories to threaten Ukrainian cities such as Kharkiv. The success of the Russians fighting on the side of Ukraine there is enlightening. Combine that with a massive NATO troop presence on Russia's borders away from Ukraine, such as Finland, Poland and the Baltics, and Russia is presented with a conundrum.
Such moves could lead to one or more of a number of effects. These include everything from Russia having to move troops out of Ukrainian territory to a dissolution of the Russian Federation. At a minimum, by taking territory in Russia, Ukraine would have a bargaining chip to trade with. Ukraine pulls out of Russia and Russia pulls out of Ukraine.
I know, many leaders in the west would be skeptical. Then again, these same leaders fully expect Russia to attack them directly in the near future. So, what's the downside?

I knew a lot about bombs when I was in the second grade the World Book Encyclopedia 1958 edition had several pages on bombs with descriptions and illustrations of damage. We little boys, little barbarians, all read about them. The teacher threatened to take the "B" volume out of the edition of books.
