- russian deputy defence minister was arrested because of special operation by Ukrainian intelligence!
In March 2024, DIU conducted a special operation that resulted in them gaining access to a significant amount of confidential information and official documents belonging to russian Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov, who is Sergei Shoigu's deputy. The source told Ukrainska Pravda that although russia responded and made attempts to secure the relevant servers, the cyberattack was successful and achieved its objective. Shortly after Ukrainian intelligence gained access to Ivanov’s official documents, russian investigative authorities opened an investigation against him on corruption charges. As a result, Ivanov has been remanded in custody on suspicion of bribe-taking.
Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) carried out drone strikes early on April 24 that set fire to oil-storage facilities in russia's Smolensk region, a source familiar with the issue has told RFE/RL.
Drones hit two fuel and lubricant storage depots in the settlements of Yartsevo and Rozdorove in the Smolensk region, causing major fires and prompting the evacuation of employees, the source said.

@@Awibrahor To date, Canada has provided 13.3 billion dollars in aid, mostly humanitarian I think. We have approved 960,000 refugees for resettlement in Canada, but so far 250,000 have arrived. We have a population of about 39 million.
I wish it was more. Our current govt is very weak on defence. For example: This year is the 100th anniversary of the RCAF. This govt just announced that they will have to continue to upgrade the CF18 fighters instead of buying new ones. It's a disgrace.

@bruce Correct, the Pentagon recalculated the "value" of equipment previously given to Ukraine and came up with $300 million dollar overage which allowed them to send another $300 million in equipment in March that was desperately needed due to Donald Trump and Moscow Mike Johnson basically blocking aid for months. It was a very smart and tricky workaround to get some stuff to Ukraine.

As a Texan and having two Republican Senators, I'm furious with one and thankful to the other. Ted Cruz voted against aid for Ukraine on the bill that passed in the Senate two months ago and he voted against aid for Ukraine again yesterday. John Cornyn voted for aid to Ukraine both times. Not all Republicans are MAGAts. But MAGATs are the loudest, angriest and stupidest.
By the way, Cruz is up for re-election, or getting fired, this year. I already voted against him in the primary. And the member of the House of Representatives from thev27th Congressional District of Texas, where I live, voted against aid for Ukraine too. Michael Cloud does NOT represent ME! I also voted against him in the primaries.
I am glad that Biden was finally able to sign a bill supporting our allies. But when I think about a little girl in a bomb shelter with her dad, asking him something like "Please daddy, If I die tonight, name your next daughter after me..." I guess you could say that I'm furious while being grateful. This WAR has made me realize that I can smile as a tear rolls down my cheek, as my blood boils.

That's quite unfortunate. I am of the opinion that we can secure our borders *AND* aid democracy and our allies around the world. Ukrainians are putting in the blood here, as well as their foreign legion. The very best thing we can do is support them with equipment, munitions, and new defensive technologies. It's in the best interests of the US as well as our friends and allies. It's pretty simple, Russia kills people for land and power, someone is always next in line. This way we can make sure nobody is next for quite awhile. Russia is just the biggest problem of many. They have directly increased inflation around the world with this crap. This could kill Putin.

No fuel for tanks or airplanes is a good thing for Russia, as is no petroleum exports. Smart move
Those depots are not for oil exports, too far inland and most don't have refining capability. They are storage for keeping their domestic economy and war machine running. So it hurts Russia even faster when they are hit. The bigger hit is the loss of the men and technology that keeps their wells pumping in the winter, once that oil freezes in the pipes and wells, they're done for.

His arrest is an expression of Putin's paranoia. Putin's paranoia is growing worse as the war goes on because his general's have claimed continuous success for 2 years but the maps say otherwise. Putin understands he's being lied to but because of the fear and isolation he can't be sure of the amount of lies or their sources. We're just at the start of a period of further arrests and selective purging by Putin as the situation deteriorates.

I like the phrase "FLOCK of drones" - that makes them sound organized, on a team or part of a family - the Ukrainian Family. Swarm works too but that's for nasty ones I think (russian ones?) Add to that, Ukraine is pioneering some new tech that THEY have delveloped. Yes - the russians are being aided by china and iran - both of whom supply drones but Ukraine has designed and created things that are new and totally sourced, and made, in Ukraine!
Finally, the huge pile of equipment that was conveniently already prepped, tweaked and shipped to Poland ready to go as soon as Joe B signed the form. And he did - and I understand the first, most needed items are already in Ukraine. There really is no more pier-to-pier comparison that can be made, between NATO forces readiness and material and the fledgling russian conscripts, being forced at gunpoint into sixty year old tanks - or unarmoured golf carts and motorcycles.

Heroyam slava! 💙✌💛 "Violence breeds violence", we often say here. That kind of runs in sync with "Unpunished evil grows". This seems to be all russia knows, the dark shady side that underlies what can seem like normal innocent life throughout their societies. Those who left russia when kgb came to power because they could foresee how that would affect russian society, have been proven right in their foresight countless times. Here, those russians say, it just gets worse and worse inside russia. This is why they won't go back there - they think it's come too far to change and become everything they had dreamt their country could've become... like the rest of the civilised countries.
Now, when *that* sort of talk comes from ethnic russians who felt so let down by their own country, that leaving it was the only way to find that dream, I'd say that speaks volumes about just how bad it's become in russia.
One major problem when a leader pretends that the really bad things that are happening to russia are not actually happening, is that they are unaware of what needs fixing to resolve those things. Metaphorically, it would be like Canute agreeing with everyone who believed that myth that he *could* hold back the tide, and consequently everyone died in the floods.
At least he had enough common sense to not pretend... what does that say about putin?
*Can russians be expected to change? I don't think they realise why it's not really other nations wanting to control them by trying to change them; but that we all (except for russia) learnt from WWII, why hitler's doctrine in Germany back then was never going to do Germany any good. Even Germany realised that!*
Never let (supposedly) pro-russian people in your own country, sow the seeds self-doubt, when you know the difference between right and wrong. Whoever the rf or putin sees as a traitor, is just a way of feeling like they still have power to control, when they are losing control of so much (thanks to the AFU))
In abusers, it's often that they have to do crazy things to feel like they are in control of something, because they know in their heart-of-hearts they lack self-control.

The Ivanov's arrest is straight out of the Chinese 'playbook. Everyone is 'on the take' so you can arrest anyone at any time and offer a genuine case against a senor official whose loyalty you have come to distrust.

Hey Anna I just learned about a Ukrainian kickboxing champ who joined the military when Russia invaded Ukraine and he was taken hostage, he's free now back in Ukraine. He was telling Russian POWs all the horrible things their comrades did to him in captivity, it was disgusting, TVP world has the video. LOL, I'm trying to learn _some_ Ukrainian & I TOTALLY understand why you'd give up! It's absolutely bonkers! It's a level 4 language & 5 is the hardest- that's why my goal is only to learn some, but even that is killing my poor brain. 😭
