The foxtail became famous after the german comedy movie "Manta Manta".
My first car was a Opel Manta B GT/E and my dad owned the predecessor Manta A SR
The first is a Late Manta from 1986 to 1988, you see it at the front halogen lights because it has quad round beams. The thing is that the Manta was using the same reflectors as the Opel Rekord between 1975 and 1985/86. when Opel changed to the Omega in summer of 86, those parts were not in stock anymore or maybe the contract ran out after ten years. So the hole was closed and 4 Hellas fitted into it.
So it was a "Manta Manta" ;-)

I had four of those when I was young. Great cars, GR, STI, GRI and GTI all 2.0 liter. Great car on snow and ice, no matter how much I fooled around, the car always corrected itself and stayed between the ditches. I still regret selling the last one.
Can't forget the superturismo or whatever was called turbocharged racing 505, neat monster.

The latter was supposed to produce 540hp but it was rumored to actually be 580hp...in the 80s. Not sure about the former's power numbers anymore.

Fun stuff! That jump at 9:30 is at Bad Emstal Rally - railway crossing Russenweg. I went there in the 80s with my dad when those Mantas were pretty new, still. Very good spot to watch. Also, as an Escort guy I have to admit: those BMW and Opel 1.9l sound pretty awesome. For that matter it is fun to watch early late 80/90s DTM races.

Try Jan de Rooy 1988 rally Paris to Dakar almost winning in a Semi! He could win but the partner semi crashed so he stopped. Regulations changes after is to limit semi speed. He was quicker then the World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen.
The later evolution Group B Audis and the Lancia Delta S4 are some of the most unhinged and also unhinged sounding cars ever.
6:10 is an Opel Manta B. Very looked down on in the late 80s and early 90s. (There were thousands of "Manta drivers jokes" in Germany at the time. There's even a movie "Manta, Manta"...) I've always loved the look of the Manta A better.

@@bartuutgrunn622 yeah, but that could just be an aftermarket thing. (Irmscher did stuff like that, for example.) The main headlights don't look like a Manta, so it is confusing.

Ah, the humble peugeot 505. It was my first car. Mine wasn't this fast, but it was sturdy enough not to die. It's inlet manifold gasket was made out of a cornflakes box covered in aviation sealant.

3:03 was at Rallye Nordbaden on Hockenheimring, I stood there 200m away as spectator. A lot of clips here came from german national rallyes. For example the Grabfeldrallye, once the biggest rallye here in Germany with over 200 competitors, also like me in my small little car 🙂 The place of 2:09 you also can see in the beginning of channel-trailer 😄

4:02 its a S14A Racing Engine with ITBs (They Came in the Normal BMW E30 M3 but detuned to either 197 hp or 230hp) 5:56 its a Opel Manta A GSI(2nd gen) from 1987 They were Used in Rallies and in Group B
They were used in 1979 (First Generation)
And They were Produced in 1970-1988 The Manta A and Manta B

6:25 is tailhappy because it is mid-engined rwd. this car was basically the blueprint for all the other group B cars putting their engine in the back. they sadly never turned to awd. im sure they could have competed with the 4wd monsters.

Would be good to hear your comments on footage of the Group B rally cars of the mid 80s, for example Audi Quattro, Lancia Delta S4, Metro 6R4, Peugeot 205 T16, Ford RS200
The best bit is that almost all of these cars are driven by amateurs that's compeeting in smaller events. Ordinary dads with a passion for motorsport that raises funds from local companies to have enough to compete. You could too if you lived in Europe 😊
That on the 9:32 was an Vauxhall cavalier/opel ascona b/opel manta. 😁 But with that front end it's an Vauxhall. 👍

The BMW E30 M3 at 3:58 is not your standard E30 M3 rally car. Lots of extras going on underneath it which was all done by Mats van den Brand as well as the driver himself Bjorn Syx. I believe he just sold that specific one but I'm not sure. The car sits/sat just a few streets from where I live. An absolute beast of a machine with a brilliant driver behind the wheel!
This weekend we have in Spain "Rally Festival Hoznayo". Last edition guest was Jari-matti Latvala with his Celica. This year we have a bunch of newish WRC cars, group A and B cars, guesting Marcus Grönholm and Jean Ragnotti rally stars. You shoud teake a look at last edition (2022) resume video!

That blue car, as well as the yellow one with the huge extra lights, where you asked what they are, are Opel Ascona from the late 80s I think. A bit bigger than the Opel Manta, there were quite a lot of them around in Germany.
And yes, the car with the funny shaped bonnet line is a Peugeot 506... or 50something, I always get mixed up with their numbers. Anyway, its the bigger, more fancy model line they had, and also from the 80s, or 90s may be.

You can find some in reputable garages associated with owners clubs in France, Belgium, Germany between 119 000 € and 170 000 € ( depending on general condition, state of maintenance and mileage ).
Can confirm, old BMWs are fun to fling around.

Also check out rallycross. When group B rally cars were banned, many appeared in even more extreme form in rallycross.

My first car was like that green one.
It was a Opel Manta GSI Irmcher 1988. Got my license in 1989. Loved that car even if it was quite dangerous to drive in snowy Lapland conditions. It was too light in the back so I played around way to much 😂
Opel Manta - one of the most beautiful cars that drove on the roads here. They later had a somewhat questionable reputation because they were very popular in the tuner and poser scene and were sometimes horribly tinkered with like circus cars. The Manta A was supposed to be somewhat reminiscent of a US pony car and the Manta B was a slightly larger cupé.
However, like the BMW, it is only ideal for rallying.
That Bluey-green coupe is a mid 80's Opel Manta.
4:00 that was an E30 M3, the one that everyone thinks is an inline 6 just like any other later M series, but it was actually a naturally aspirated inline 4. I highly recommend you to check out how NA inline 4s sound, specially the ones that get to 8000rpm+, those are truly the best sounding engines that exist

The Opel Manta in this video are both the second generation, the first generation was much more stylish in my opinion.
Great Audis and the Peugeot 505 spitting flames was a treat, it's one of those cars which you don't see anymore, even in classic rally it is a rare beast.
In australia hyundai is a pretty popular brand, used to be part owned by mitsubishi. Kia was part owned by mazda, then bought out by hyundai.

i dailey drive a 90s italian 5 cylinder turbo with 400bhp at the front wheels going through a 6 speed manual with a viscous coupling to put the power down. 3 inch catless straight pipe on a stage 3 hybrid Garrett t28 turbo technicks turbocharger. sounds just like the quattro. boy do the neighbours just looove me! 😅

That specific Audi sound. Had the honor to go with (as a passenger) on sea ice. I myself own a SAAB V4, rallycross specified from the factory. 0 to 62 = 3 seconds, but only 145 Kmh at top speed. Do something about SAAB and rallying.
