Dell XPS 15 Overheating 🔥

  • I improved my video rendering times by 50% after applying Kryonaut thermal grease to the CPU + GPU, 6w/mk thermal padding to the VRM chips and cleaning out the dust accumulated in this Dell XPS 15 9560. Many of Dell's XPS laptop range sadly suffer from overheating, the simple solutions in this video can help your laptop run at far lower temperatures and in turn improve running speeds.

I repasted my XPS 15 9560 a couple of days ago. Smrt as I am, I did not take temperatures before.
I used the paste from Noctua, just because I still had some. Shouldn't be too different from the Kryonaut, as we are in the top notch category anyways.
Dust cleaning is mandatory if you have it disassembled that much, because airflow is paramount. I did not replace the thermal pads, as they were still 'rubbery' (and forgot to order some).
I used maybe more paste than necessary, since in a Gamers Nexus video, they tested exactly that and did not have negative effects up until they used a ludicrous amount of paste. However, since it is a Laptop CPU and GPU without the metal heatspreader of a desktop CPU, I spreaded the paste carefully so every corner of the dies is covered, since otherwise you will have hot spots there.
Result: at a room temperature of about 20°C to 22°C, it idles in Windows 11 with a browser open at about 46°C to 51°C, with occasional fan spinning.
In Minecraft without FPS restriction, it manages a stable 3,4+ GHz at about 90°C, so there should be no thermal throttleing. Measured with GPU-Z.

I've done the same but after repasting with Arctix MX-4, my temps went up way higher than they were before! I thought I may have just applied too much paste (and I think I did) but now that I repasted again with a smaller amount, the temps are still idle 65° with chrome + spotify + whatsapp open and the fans are constantly spinning :/
I'd undervolt but that isn't possible anymore with all the new software so at this point I'm not sure what to do. I ordered Thermal Grizzly paste but I doubt it will make a noticeable difference. Thinking about cooling pads too but I also don't see how that could do more than +-5° which is by far not enough for my system.
This XPS 15 9570 has had issues ever since I got it but this has just been getting worse and worse lately...

Could you provide temps before and after? Thanks!

Have you tried undervolting too? I've seen other owners point to this as well as swapping thermal padding!

The you cut the thermal pads to fit the size of the vrm chips?

Is there an accessory that could keep the laptop dustless?

I just cleaned mine, still heating and throttling like hell. Bad design is the biggest problem. Marketologists win.
