Only ONE PROBLEM!!! Dell XPS 15 - 1 Year Later

  • Should YOU buy the Dell XPS 15? A little more than a year ago, we got the Dell XPS 15 to use as part of a workstation. The goal was to get a good value laptop with a large display, comfortable keyboard and a good trackpad. A laptop that is portable enough to take with us and would also work great as part of a dedicated workstation with an external keyboard and mouse, plus an additional monitor.
    So now, looking back, was it a good choice? Mostly yes - but let me explain.

    Yes! More of these, please. I think reviewers today grossly overlook the longevity factor when talking about tech. I used a 2012 MacBook Pro in 2019 and I was just blown away at how good it was for its age.

    I got my Silver/Black XPS 9510, W11Pro, OLED, i9, 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD, on Feb 23, 2022. I paid $1,764 at the Dell Outlet Store on the Dell website. At the time, the new price for this premium configuration was $3,099. It was a "Like New" refurb that you absolutely cannot tell from brand new. It came with a full new Warranty. I've purchased several computers from the Dell Outlet Store and when they list them as "Like New", that's exactly what you get, you cannot tell them from brand new. You can't go wrong with the Dell Outlet Store as Dell pays the shipping both ways if you don't like it for any reason. I use my XPS 9510 for photography (Lightroom/Photoshop subscription), Stock trading (Interactive Brokers Trader Workstation), and software development (Microsoft Visual Studio). After 7 months' use, this is without a doubt the best computer I've ever owned. I love it! The OLED screen is absolutely stunning! I'd buy it again in a heartbeat, especially at Dell Outlet Store prices.

    Careful. DO NOT BUY THIS BRAND OF LAPTOP! If your battery breaks down, which will happen sooner or later, you are totally obliged to buy the battery from them at the price they want to sell it to you. And that, assuming they have it. No other battery from any manufacturer will work for you even if the model is correct. The laptop will run on the battery but will not charge it. And the same will happen to you with chargers. If it is not the one they sell you, the laptop will work connected to the current but it will not charge the battery. I have a computer store and I have had to choose not to sell or support any device of that brand.

It's a thing of beauty! Hopefully I'll be as happy with it a year from now as you are with yours. I will also be primarily using it as part of a workstation setup with an external monitor. It looks like in your workstation setup you're using Audioengine speakers (A2+ Plus? Wireless?) with Kanto stands. How do you like them? Did you consider the A5+ Plus? @@stardewhillbully It's working great! It is super fast and I'm having no issues at all. However, keep in mind I am currently using it only as a workstation, so I have an external 27" HD monitor (1920 x 1080) connected via HDMI, and an external wired keyboard and mouse. In other words, I am not using the touch screen, trackpad, or laptop keyboard, so someone not using any external devices or accessories may have a different experience. But with my setup, I am loving life! I am connecting wirelessly to my network gateway with 100+ Mbps Internet download speeds, so the internal Killer Wi-Fi 6 AX1650 (2x2) card works fine. I am also using a very handy, portable, and reasonably inexpensive (~$99) USB C Hub to provide all of my external connections, an Anker PowerExpand 11-in-1 USB C Hub Adapter, which provides 4K@60Hz HDMI and DP, 100W Power Delivery, USB-C and 3 USB-A Data Ports, 1 Gbps Ethernet, 3.5mm Audio, microSD and SD Card Reader. You missed the fact that we can no longer use the Fn & Left/Right as Home and End. It's a feature that's on just about every other laptop, but for some reason Dell have stopped it. For those of us that edit text a lot (software developers for example) it's crucially important that we have easy access to the Home/End keys, but Dell now puts these on dedicated keys at the top of the keyboard - nowhere near the cursor keys. I have LOVED the XPS line for decades now, but my next laptop is likely to be an Apple instead, because of this one stupid mistake by Dell.

    • @emissarygw2264
      @emissarygw2264 Před 2 lety

      Hmm, tbh I never really saw fn-left/right as a feature. When I moved from a laptop with dedicated keys to my 2017 model, it annoyed the hell out of me needing an extra keystroke. I mostly use those keys for like shift-end or shift-home, which looks like it'll be OK, or mass end of line deletions/insertions like up-end-backspace repeatedly, which looks doable and will take one less keystroke.

Just 1 week ago over night my card reader suddenly broke... Currently in Touch with the dell Support but so far i have to say i'm a bit disappointed considering i spend a good amount over 2k euros on it...also cant handle davinci resolve in some Situations...

    I use mine for photoshop and lightroom, but its kinda small for that and probably shouldve waited for the 17 in. Mine came with the wobble trackpad issue, but eventually dell came to my house to fix it under warranty. Had audi probably for a while but eventually fixed them. Bluetooth fucking sucks though. Don't expect to use bt headphones with this without problems. Really disappointing. Wish you could upgrade the gpu as well. Its hard to open and almost impossible for me to open with one hand. Overall very happy with it, definitely recommend it.

    @PWingert1966 Před 3 lety

    Your point about the backlight it totally on point. I have the same issue with my older model PXS 13 as well. I wish Dell had made the backlight an arctic blue so there is a slight bit of contrast between the white and the blue that would be just enough to solve the issue. I have owned my older XPS 13 for several years now and am finding the ceramic that they are using on the keyboard deck area is yellowing slightly. This may be palm grease and sweat penetrating into the ceramic surface or just oxidation of the ceramic surface. I have seen other reports by Dave 2D and that corroborates this. The effect is subtle and comes across as a slight patina and isn't distracting in everyday use.

      Yes, XPS 15 have a $200-300 premium due to the pretty bezel free display. If that is important to you then the value equation is moot, but for those of us not too concerned about aesthetics then the XPS is not great value?

    Excellent review! I've just bought the XPS 9510 in white and agree with you regarding the backlit keyboard. (My old XPS was black and so there wasn't any issue).
    The key legends completely disappear and at first, I didn't think it would be so much of an issue, but it's actually a little off-putting. It's no deal breaker and I'm going to experiment with sitting my laptop on my (slightly angled) cooling stand to see if the angle helps 😉
