The Truth About Animal Testing for Cosmetics

- If you’ve had questions about the way companies still test on animals in North America today, we have the answers-and some solutions. The reality is that many alternatives to animal testing are more reliable, safer and don’t result in half a million rabbits, guinea pigs, mice and rats being blinded or killed every single year.
After all, in over two decades of being in business, Lush is proud to say that we have never needed to test any of our beauty, bathing, hair or skin care products on a single animal (other than some very eager human volunteers). On top of that, many of our Charity Pot charities are devoted to numerous animal rights causes around the world, including Social Compassion in Legislation and the Animal Alliance of Canada.
If you’d like to see an end to animal testing, we have some ways for you to get involved:

I told my teacher that we should be talking about this in class, she agreed. I want people to know what is truly going on
You are an amazing person☺
With your help we can end an testing once and for all #animal testing is incool #animal testing is for low lifes
Dear Agnes, just want to say thank you for talking to your teacher about this and sharing this information with others in your class.
Yes more light needs to be shed on this
my teacher made me watch this
I legit thought they just swatched lipsticks or foundations on the animals then wiped it off. This breaks my heart
I feel so so so bad for the poor animals it’s not fair!!!
it’s all so unnecessary
Same
I feel like if they did that it would be much more effective results and adults say they're smarter than kids
@Ghostie Toastie and the even sadder thing is they don’t just kill them they torture them
This just hurts me, I have two bunnies and they want to be fat and alive -I'm not joking-
Savage Yoongi Yes! (Also love your name)
I have a bunny too! This is so sad 😞
Sofia N Would you use something that has been tested on 10000 rats but not on any human? The reality is there will always be the first human ever to be tested on.
Not to mention there’re already hundreds of other testing methods that are more effective without the need to involve animals. So your point?
Sofia N explain how I'm dumb I was just saying that I don't support bunnies being tested on
you can have my 98 year old grandma
I’m do glad my country has banned animal cruelty testing. I live in NZ so no products can be sold here if the company has tested on animals.
The company can technically still test on animals, but not in NZ or the EU. For example I live in Germany, which is a part of the EU, and MAC, Maybelline, L'Oreal, NARS, Benefit etc are still sold, although they test on animals because they sell there stuff in China. The gag is, that they don't do it within EU borders so it's technically not illegal, but they STILL test on animals (i.e. in China). These type of brands also know how to hide that fact on there websites, too. So, be still mindful when buying cosmetics :)
I also live in NZ and know for a fact that there are many brands that are sold here support animal testing. Almost every drug store brand and lots of high end brands. It's very common which is devastating. Brands have been able to find loop holes in animal testing policies to be able to claim they're cruelty free even if they're not. For example if their ingredients are tested and not the final product, they still test. So you have to watch out for that
Cia Isherwood they can be sold here but if they’re manufactured here they have to be cruelty free
@@rabiae.4002 any ingredient that has been tested on animals cannot be sold in the EU
ayy same
I only buy cruelty free stuff. Our makeup etc is not worth the suffer of animals.
@Dusia Sulikowska That is so true. The, torture, enslavement, and death of innocent beings are *not* worth shampoos, cosmetics, toothpastes, soaps, etc. One very sad fact is that most of the dogs used for animal testing are beagles.
Or you can Just stop using make up!!
@@californication000 makeup isnt bad..?
@@dovydas4156 you don't really need it, it's very unnatural, natural beauty is nice :)
@@starry_13 yeah maybe they should be more concerned about their mental health then, or maybe look into psychedelics or some kind of spiritual awakening, self acceptance ... I've seen ladies who look gorgeous without make up and then spend 40min in the bathroom and turn into this doll-like creature... Sad
I have a bunny and it just angers me seeing this. My bunny is such a loving animal and just want to be petted and cuddled and loved. It's such and inoffensive animals and it kills me to know that people do such cruel things on bunnies. I'm proud to say I've gone completely cruelty-free with my cosmetics for over 3 years now.
Here after watching the save Ralph short 😭💔 #saveralph #becrueltyfree
that made me cry ):
Same 😭 #saveralph #becrueltyfree
@@atsap_7497 it made me cry as well! I could not stop thinking about it for like 2 days straight! So so so disturbing but It made me change my ways of choosing makeup and other home cleaning products
Yeah and when Ralph said "So good...", it made me cry
Me 😭😭 And then I watched the real Ralph and they were sticking something in his eye I was about to sob
I used to buy MAC makeup before I found out about animal testing. Now I will only buy cruelty-free brands like wet n wild, essence, LUSH.
Essence is a great alternative in my country. In peru we don't have many laws protecting animals (god! we don't even have enough laws to protect women!). Hopefully campaigns like this around the globe will expand the concern in other countries like mine.
Wet n wild is not cruelty free as they claim to be. Research it.
Wet n wild test on animals :(
To be honest I can understand this with medicines because those need to be tested on animals to save lives. However It's unnecessary for everything else and especially cosmetics because there are plenty of ways to make cosmetics without even needing to test on animals. Examples would be companies such as burts and bees who don't even need to test their products on animals because they use natural ingredients.
@@grace7146 Yeah I just looked it up and apparently they're no longer cruelty free. However there are some cosmetics that you can use that are such as burts and bees ( I love their lip balm) and lush cosmetics.
I have 3 bunnies, and i was crying so hard this is so sad! #BeCrueltyFree
Any update?

Do you ever put lipstick on you're bunnies?
Thank you for doing this campaign. It is something that is very near and dear to my heart. So happy to be working for you guys! I cant wait to bring awareness to my customers :D
I have a rabbit and I started hugging her so much this is so cruel I would like to see those people getting tested and blinded
And this is why I love lush so much they speak up about this and do some thing The don’t only sell amazing products but they don’t test on animals. WOW you are amaising lush
ppl complain that lush is pricey but its worth it for how they handle their business and are ethical
I love lush, cruelty free and it looks so natural unlike other products. It is not that crap like dove and dial, it is actual good things they are putting in their stuff. It maybe a little pricey but animal's lives are worth any price tag.
I've been using cruelty free products for almost 5 years now and I haven't died, non tested products are still safe we don't need to put so many animals in pain!!
I watched this with my two bunnies hopping around me and all bunnies deserve to be happy like them
I'm so proud of you, Lush & I'm proud of California!
I can’t imagine my poor bunnies having to be put through a useless, cruel life. Just so that some self absorbed people can have some makeup. I’m actually crying.
I agree with you. However, just because some people buy makeup without knowing it's animal tested doesn't make them self absorbed. Did it ever cross your mind they didn't know that animal testing was a thing? Did it ever cross your mind that people wear makeup because they are insecure and bullied about their looks?
@@awhchar7633 Sorry for the confusion. I guess I didn’t specify what type of person I was talking about. I know that people wear makeup because they are insecure and bullied from personal experience. I was talking about the people who know animal testing is a thing but continue to support those company’s. All I am saying is that people who really care would put in the time to do a bit of research and fix their mistakes. Yes, some people don’t know about animal testing that’s why it’s important to spread awareness about this very heavy and important topic. I don’t know why you are assuming my tone and what I was saying in my comment. I understand it’s harder to hear what I am saying since we aren’t talking face to face.
@awhchar You do make a good point about how some people do not know some products are animal tested before buying them, that’s why people are spreading awareness about this terrible situation. In @Peachypets comment she or he was referring to the people who do know about this problem and still use the animal tested cosmetics. Just because some people have insecurities does not make it okay to continue to buy these products even after knowing that they are tested in a harmful way. There are plenty of non animal tested products in the makeup industry that people can buy, and they work perfectly fine. If you already have animal tested products you can still use them but don’t continue to buy these harmful products cause it is just encouraging these companies to continue to produce these products which are being tested on innocent animals.
@@esmecohen_23 I have to respectfully disagree with you. In my opinion if your bunnies are spoiled by an owner like you they deserve to be toughened up a little. Think about what your bunnies would want not what you think they would want.
@@esmecohen_23 you are completely wrong. Animals were bread for our use. You would know that if you were actually educated. If your bunny’s aren’t used for animal testing or meat then they are completely useless and spoiled. I can’t believe that you think people including me would pick ur stinky fat bunny’s over beautiful makeup. Your uneducated and nobody cares about your bunnies.
You have no idea how grateful I was to see New Zealand as one of countries who banned animal testing.
How awful! Don’t ever purchase from brands that animal test
No
@@sykosyxx1728 lmaooo 😂
This also includes laundry detergents and even worse personal lubricants.
I honestly cry so much thinking about this. My connection to any type of animal is almost too much, and it makes me really sensative around this topic. I want to do something about it, so ive never bought a product unless i was 100% sure its cruelty free, and i want to do more still.
I think I found my calling, I want to be a part of this movement, today major brands are continuing to test on animals, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with my life but this is what I want to do. It fucking pains me to see them test on animals when they said that they have plenty other ways of testing.
I’ve just recently realized how important this is.
Me too
MAC is one of the products that do this! #stopanimalcruelty
#ENDANIMALTESTING
This is really upsetting for me because I have a bunny he is loving and caring -
Thank you Lush. This is why I will always stand by your business. Also thank you for including captions in the video!

I thought they did makeovers for animals when I heard they tested makeup products on animals. I never even knew this was a thing since no one spoke of it until this spread on the social media platform. These beauty companies, shampoo companies and etc need to stop. #BeCrueltyFree
My innocent self thought they tried the shampoo/makeup on the animals then wiped it off.....
My heart literally breaking because of my blindness
I have 2 gerbils. One of them got hurt . He got a scent tumor. So he got surgery and got it removed by a amazing vet. When my gerbil ( fluffy) got back he was very tired. It’s been 3 days and he is back like the new crazy energetic cutie fluffy. My mom paid 900 bucks for it but he is part of our family. I wish to adopt all those animals
Stuff like this is what got me into LUSH in the first place.
I don't really ever use makeup. But if I ever do, i make sure it's cruelty free. I love bunnies and mice i don't think they should be hurt.
I didn't know that my country has banned animal testing. I'm so glad to hear that. 🇹🇷
I used to have a rabbit name Rachel. She was grey and fluffy then one day she just got taken away. I hope it wasn't an animal tester, but where ever she is, I hope shes safe.
Its either after a few days watching Ralph video , this videos got recommended for you or it just got recommended out of no where...
Me and my bestie have been researching about this after watching Ralph the rabbit changes you prospective highly recommended if your interested in this
Omfg why haven't I paid attention to animal testing it's so damn curl
Isabel it’s so damn curl
I think it is very good that you addressed this topic. It is showing us that lots of problems that have been around for a while can still be here. If you want to support the cosmetics that do not get tested on animals look for the leaping bunny.
Cosmetics Tests That Use Animals
Animals are still used to assess the safety of cosmetics and personal care products - such as lipstick, mascara, shampoo, and cologne. It’s estimated that 500,000 mice, guinea pigs, rats, and rabbits suffer and die in these tests every year throughout the world. Each ingredient in a cosmetic or personal care product that needs to be tested can be run through the tests listed below. Pain relief is rarely provided and the animals used are always killed at the end of each test.
helpvoiceless.com/cosmetics-tests-that-use-animals/
And then if they go extinct the people are like “they were great animals I wish they never died!” Like no!
I couldn’t watch this since i read the title. Animal testing is unfair. Animals will not use this crap so why testing on them? I have pets myself and I cried seeing the bunny in the intro

Yea this is awesome! I love the editing in this! Good job!
I appreciate the evidence to show the public that in addition to being cruel, it’s unnecessary and actually less effective than non-animal safety testing. The fact that there are better alternatives for both animals and the consumers is what could really seal the deal on this.
I just noticed it’s been 2 years

Does anyone know which brands does animal testing?? That way I can start condesning my skincare and makeup. As well, if there are more resources and websites to look at at
Big brand companies! Loreal, Cover Girl, Rimmel etc. The best way to look for cruelty things is to look for the lil rabbit icon on products. Hello, I stand with you against animal testing. I made up a bag in my house and I took away all of our animal tested products (I had zero products it was the rest of my family who had tons.) and I signed your animal testing petition, bought your “against animal testing bag” and I hand wrote letters to the companies who test on animals and got replies. I am only 11 years old and I made a difference. I am getting all my friends to notice. I have almost all of lush’s products, I buy all the LUSH charity pots too. And listen here, NOT ONE PERSON IN MY HOUSEHOLD OWNS ANYTHING ANIMAL TESTED, because of me! Because I made a difference. I ONLY get my cosmetics from lush and the body shop. That’s all I will ever get my cosmetics from. - Sandie :)

This makes me so upset that someone could ever do this, i was shocked today when i found out that Aussie shampoo gets tested on animals, i loved this shampoo but im not going to risk an animals life just for the sake of my hair, and im upset that it isnt illegal where i am
Sadly most things like fur, meat, eggs, milk, animal testing, dissection, hunting, trapping, rodeos, circuses, the pet trade, horse racing, dog racing, dog fighting, rooster fighting are still legal and have barely any laws to protect animals.
Yeah, PETA doesn't have a great animal testing policy. I trust leaping bunny the most. Hope that helps! :)

hi could I use this footage for a uni project? Journalism student at LJMU.
Where is the citation and sources for the statistics listed in this video?
If animal testing is cruel, then how can we ensure the cosmetic products (which are mainly made from chemical ingredients) are exactly 100% safe for human use? Do we directly enter the phase of recruiting human volunteers to do trial? What if the human trial injure the face of people who are testing? Who should be responsible for the injury? To what extend the cosmetic companies will pay the compensation towards the volunteers who are injured? Is there any penalties towards the failure of human trial? And finally, can we really believe the cosmetic companies to truthfully sell 'natural cosmetic products', while we don't know if there is any accidental addition/synthesis of unknown toxic chemical compounds or skin irritants during the manufacturing process?
And lastly, can we really trust 'cruelty free' companies to provide us the cosmetic products which are 'safe for human usage'? What are the proofs the the companies ensure the quality and safety assurance of the products to us as customers?
I agree with you
