    Randomly saw this in my home screen even though I had never heard of you before, but when I saw this video had 419 views I had to do something about it

    Correct me if I'm wrong but the purpose of this contraption is basically to give the player a choice whether to take a few stacks, or take a whole shulker box when they need the items, right?

      Which is why I’m confused that the automatic design doesn’t have that ability

      Yes, that is correct.

      Good point, and I simply forgot to cover it in the video. There are two ways you would do this.
      First, you could lower the floor by a block and then just break the box to get a box full of the resource and it would be replaced just like normal. If you need more then you break more. The risk here is that some of the boxes may make their way into the return line, but you can make an empty box filter so they don't get put back into the system. This could even be a feature if you don't drop the floor then you can break all the boxes you want then go pick them up at the end of the line.
      Second, you could replace the barrel with a double chest, keeping the hopper and torch, and then run the dropper line up and into the double chest. This way the chest is resupplied from below and still provides a way to access full boxes of the resource. My only concern with this method is that the chest doesn't have a full block hitbox, so it may mess with the consistency of the empty box return.

    Pretty nice and simple design. I always get paranoid that the broken box would get shunted the wrong way but I am guessing that the way its set up it prefers to shunt toward a side adjacent block that is open rather than up. I will probably use some of these.

      It isn’t really an issue. Idk about this design but I had a box loader that was relying on the item to get pushed on the side and it was like 0,08% loss. Not a big deal

    • @metamilo
      @metamilo  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah, this should be nearly if not completely lossless, especially with the 1.19 changes to item breaking consistency. Also, shulker shells are now farmable and the boxes will always be empty when broken, so the impact of actually losing a box is minimal.

    How would I go about connecting this to a sorting system that sorts items into shulkers? Not sure if you have a video on it or could point me in the right direction, but it is important to note that I am working with a 64 hopper/chunk limit

      I don't have a tutorial for this, but you can check out the storage tech discord and they have tonnes of examples and schematics: discord.gg/JgGRGU59gR

    Nice smol display, but I think it suffers because of the location of the barrel

    • @metamilo
      @metamilo  Před 2 lety +2

      Yeah, but that part is pretty flexible, you could move it down one by adding a dropper where the white concrete is, but then the hopper wouldn't be locked.

      @@metamilo corret, Im mostly saying it because it Would be very strange to automate the filling of that barrel lol

    how would the broken shulker box always know how to land onto the hopper one block over once it breaks? wouldn't it sometimes just throw itself in a trajectory where it avoids the hopper?

      @entereloaded the white glass just placeholders for the shulkerbox from the imaginary slice next to it

    • @metamilo
      @metamilo  Před 2 lety

      Good question. This device uses the predictability of item shunting mechanics, similar to how the old glass elevators work. Namely that when items are inside another block they first look to the sides and then up for a place to be shunted.
      When the piston above the box fires it immediately breaks the box which spawns as an item at the center of the block space it previously occupied. At this point it gets a random speed and direction, and when the piston head extends it pushes the item down until it hits the block below, at which point the item clips into the piston head and gets shunted out. Because 3 of the blocks to the side are full blocks (1 barrel, 2 shulker boxes) there is only one legal direction to go, towards the comparator, which is above the hopper that immediately picks the item up.
      This method of crushing boxes with piston heads is 100% reliable to my knowledge. However, if you use a sticky piston to push another block into the shulker box's space to break it, then I don't think reliability is guaranteed.

    How tileable is it? If we put the back pistons back-to-back instead of side-to-side (reverse of 3:51), would it still work or would it fail due to QC or something?
