You’re about an hour and a half into the movie and, boy, are you regretting that large soda. You can hold it... but should you?
Peeing is pretty important. Your kidneys filter excess water and waste out of your blood and that urine needs somewhere to go: your bladder. Normally, it’ll hold 1-2 cups comfortably. But if you make a habit of holding your pee for long periods of time, you can actually stretch your bladder to easily hold even more.
Case in point, one study found that nurses who often held it in all day due to job constraints had nearly double the normal bladder capacity! And they were totally fine.
But this doesn’t mean you should hold it in if you can help it. Because your bladder may not be the only thing to stretch.
You may also stretch your external sphincter muscles. Those are important muscles connected to the outside of your bladder that are the gate-keepers of your golden liquid. Clench them and you hold in the gold. Relax them and you release the flood! But if you overstretch them, you can actually lose control. This is rare, and usually takes decades of holding it too long to reach that point, but once you do, it can lead to some awkward or even dangerous situations.
For example, with less overall control, you risk leaking urine when your bladder is full and not emptying it all the way when you finally do go. Not only can this increase your need to urinate more often since your bladder fills up quicker, it can also lead to a serious disorder called urinary retention, where you end up with too much urine in your bladder for too long. And since your bladder is basically a warm, wet bag of body waste, it’s the PERFECT breeding ground for harmful bacteria that’ll cause all sorts of damage.
Even worse, if you’re really unlucky and retain too much urine, it may back up into your kidneys. Which could lead to kidney failure, and ultimately death.
The good news is that you’re more likely to just lose control of your muscles and pee waaaay before your bladder hits that point. But why not just reduce the risk all together and go to the bathroom?

One time I actually held my bladder for 9 hours straight. We were on a really long car trip and it just made the trip a lot short with less rest stops. I didn’t know back then that this was a bad thing to do. At least as so as we got home, everyone got out of my way as I ran for the bathroom 😂
Holding it once or twice isn't bad thing. The bladder is free to stretch and contract but doing it for long can cause the gateway to stretch which is voluntary muscles tissue. That's the only part you can lose control over it. As for kidney failure stuff you gotta have other disease for this to happen
I did the same when I was 18 on a trip coming home from camping in the Sierra Nevada mountains back to Los Angeles. I knew it was going to be a doozy so I recorded it on audio cassette and timed it. It was a 4 minute and 21 second solid stream, plus about 2 extra minutes of squirting out small bits. I recorded it because my friends would have never believed the story nor thought that I could do a longer piss than from "The Naked Gun" and Adam Sandler's skit "The Longest Pee" ("They're All Gonna Laugh At You," 1993), which were both about 1 minute long. At the end, I said, "I feel relieved." I turned on the radio and it was the theme song to Sesame Street on the hip hop station. I said, "What the hell is going on here?" - Biff Tannen, Back To The Future 2.

I remember once holding my pee for 4 hours after drinking over a liter and a half of water beforehand. I don’t know why I haven’t just stopped at a gas station or something but I insisted on making it home. My bladder felt like it was about to explode for a solid 30 minutes and any small movement of my body made it hurt like hell. But the worst part was when I had finally made it home and tried to get out of the car to go to the bathroom. I’ve spent 15 minutes to walk from my car to the bathroom. I couldn’t stand up right from the pain. Needless to say it was the longest peeing session of my life and the relief I felt was unmatched by anything else. That day I was really worried that my bladder would actually pop. I will never allow my self to reach that stage again.

Update: (I have left this comment under one of your CZcams shorts!) I have a stretched bladder. I didn't learn about this until 7th grade (now in 9th grade) although I have been doing this for now five years. As a victim, I am just here to tell others that it can be very painful when you have been doing it for maybe two years (I started at 10, but it left me with the most pain I ever felt at 12, even though I have never been pregnant before I would describe it as labor. That is how painful it was for me.) Now almost 15, I got into the habit of actually going when I feel like I have to. I initially started doing it out of pleasure (yes, you read that correctly.) and then it later got out of control. This is why teaching important things about our bodies at a young age is so vital. I didn't learn about any of this until I was 13-14 years old. I now have a very sensitive stretched bladder but fortunately it is not too late to get better. :) although irreversible, I can help myself before I kill myself with the amount of germs in my organs (it can kill you slowly over time, just to note.) This goes out to whoever may need this. Please protect your organs and God bless.

You can end up having kidney failure on needing dialysis. When my mother was at the hospital I talked to a dialysis patient who told me that he did not like going to the bathroom unless it was his own and use to hold it all the time. He started to develop problems and was on dialysis now.
Damn, I've always thought it was the opposite. I thought your sphincter muscles were a "use it or lose it" thing, where you had to keep them active and practice holding it to get the muscle stronger, and if you just go right away every time you even kinda have to, you'd end up incontinent because your sphincter isn't getting enough exercise at holding it. I remember hearing an anecdote from someone that they spent years working on a farm, where they would just pee wherever anytime they had to go and would never hold it... and said that a result he lost his ability to hold it, and every time he has to pee now, it's an emergency. That made a lot of sense to me, as muscles need exercise and use to stay strong, or they atrophy.
Now this tells me the opposite. I feel like if I trust it, I'll be told it's better to hold it years from now, when I'm incontinent.
It's probably a bit of both. I'm not sure if it'd be due to the muscles themselves or simply the side effects of habits, but I'm sure that if you always peed immediately and never got used to holding in your pee, it would have that effect. The important thing in life is to never go overboard with anything. Just listen to what your body tells you (as we evolved to do) and adjust for any known underlying medical conditions
I think you are correct; the stronger we are able to control our bladder muscles the better we are in. Avoid drinking too much caffeine; proper hygiene , especially female, etc

The bladder is not like a rigid container filling up like a tank, as shown in the animation. It is an elastic bag which shrinks or expands, and never contains air above the liquid.

“Surgical bladder” is a thing. We can’t just dash out whenever we want so we hold it for long periods. Sometimes up to 10 or 12 hours depending upon the surgical procedure. Speaking of surgery please don’t hold your urine for long periods on road trips because guess what ruptures first during an accident if you do? You got it and it’s because the seatbelt is usually placed right over the top.

Yeah, it's true. Everyone feels the urge to pee every day. But sometimes there are situations where we can't go to the toilet when we need to, if we are sitting in a vehicle or busy with work, or when your teacher doesn't let you go to the toilet. Sometimes we don't just get up and go whenever we feel like. It is okay to hold your pee, but not for so long that it can cause problems like urinary tract infection or kidney damage. If you need to hold your pee, then just make sure not to drink a lot of water. And also do not drink alcohol because alcohol produces even more urine than water does.

Fun fact: schools are legally required to let you go to the bathroom if you need to. They cannot control whether or not you can go. You have the right to use the bathroom, and you can literally walk out if you really need to.
(Bathroom access is also a human right according to the 2015 UN General Assembly)
Edit: I'm not suggesting you should just get up and leave whenever you want, you should always be courteous and try to work things out with the teacher if you need some form of special accommodation, I'm just saying if there's a sudden emergency then you shouldn't feel compelled to put your health at risk just for this

I got an urinary tract infection for holding it too long too frequently. It was the most painful thing I have ever experienced up until that point. Never again.
me too .i holded for too long for 3 hrs and suffered with uti and bladder distension ,it happened 6 years ago, still iam facing bladder urinary contingency, its annoying getting knee pains for frequent visiting toilets and wasting lot of time in my office. my employees are getting annoyed too, i told them the problem. they go to toilets every 6 -7 hrs which is normal, where as i go to toilet every 1 hr or sometimes 3 hrs .i fear of urine stones ,so i drinks lots of water too. actually i developed ptsd after uti.because i had holded my urine voluntarily for 3 hrs due to fear of my strict lecturer and social phobia .my dad scolded me there's something wrong psycology in my brain due that i developed fear.
Me too I actually peed myself when I had a urinary tract infection, it was bad I even peed myself from holding it too long and sometimes first thing in the morning, I don’t make it, so I just pee in my pull up I can’t hold it at night which is why I wear pull-ups. I have several palsy which makes it incredibly difficult for me to hold it at night and I don’t physically feel when I have to urinate until it’s too late.

I think it's great to hold it in up to the point of where you can go to sleep at 23:00 and then wake up at 8 without having to pee in between. My blatter holds about 600-700ml now and it's the perfect size to me.

Oh, that makes a lot of sense. I've known a few people that hold their pee because they'd rather not use dirty bathrooms. Never heard of any of them getting actually ill, but I'd imagine it's a rough time when you have to be out of the house for a long time. What's the longest yime you've had to hold your pee?

I'm 17. I pee my pants almost every day. I didn't always have weak bladder muscles. I ruined my bladder muscles because I never realize I need to pee until it's too late, and then I'm forced to hold it (pure torture) until I don't feel like I need to pee anymore and the feeling goes away. Only then can I safely get up and walk to the toilet. I'll piss myself if I don't do this. I'm not sure why nobody else has this issue.

A boy actually got hospitalized in the primary wing of my school due to kidney failure because he holded his pee for too long (he and few other boys were having a competition on who holds their pee for the longest time)(stupid)

First by not holding your pee anymore. Just pee when you feel the need to go. And second, kegel exercises should help too. Do you hold your pee often?

It’s me at the beginning! I was watching Avatar The Way Of Water at the cinema and after 15 minutes I wanted to pee while the film lasts 3 hours. I’ve never wanted this much in my life. I managed to sneak into the bathroom at the end of the movie and I didn’t know how they got out of the boat so I went back to see a second session. 😂
I have been holding in my pee since I was a really young because the potty training Elmo toilet traumatized my little self so I avoided using the bathroom. Even after learning how to use a regular toilet I still hold it in. I don’t even think about it now, I just do it. However holding in my pee for the majority of my life has affected me a lot. Lately I have had small accidents where I sneeze and my bladder lets go a bit and pee comes out. Luckily I have been in my house when these accidents happened but now that it’s happening more often I’m scared to have an accident when I’m outside….I’m less the 16 years old

I remember doing this once for two hours when i was 7, basically on christmas day after we left the church we instantly went to a hotel instead of going home which was two hours away and i held it in for the whole ride, i still remember going to pee when i reached the hotel and it was legit the best feeling in the world, i wish i could relive it again
I remember when I was a kid I used to hold in my poop all the time then one morning something happened to me and needed to go to hospital, they found out that my appendix was swollen like a beach ball or smth idk and I had to get operation to remove it, lesson learned

@@mrsugar7528 I used to hold poop for 7 days. Don't ask me how that is possible. I still don't know. One time the poop was too hard and occasionally blood will come but never got anything serious. I'm glad that I don't have to do any surgeries or go to the hospital. Poop not coming out is the worst feeling ever. You pray to god use as much force as possible and not too much because you are scared that you will let out blood.

I always held it in as a kid. I was always busy doing something and found it so annoying to have to stop and go to the bathroom. I have adhd by the way. I could hold it in for hours, all day in fact. sometimes I wouldn’t go until the next day. I can’t imagine how much I was holding. at the age of 14/15 my bladder was weak and nearly every time I went to the bathroom it ached like hell. please don’t hold it in if you don’t have to. just go. It’s not worth it.

Good news is that you can no longer hold it in and then pee before any problems happen. The problems are rare, but it can happen.

I have a bathroom-associated social anxiety due to a dangerous, trsumatic experience that I had in a bathroom. When there are people nearby my body automatically goes into fight or flight mode and I am totally unable to relax my urinal sphincter. Imagine what kind of suffering it is to have this issue every time you go to pee. I have worked on it and has improved significantly over the years but I believe its so important to make this known, to let the world know about this issue. It is very common but people who suffer from this, suffer in secret because of shame

@@larckpack1692 I didn't solve it. I still have paruresis but it's not as severe now. I have been going to therapy and improving myself ocerall. Being happier and having less stress overall helps

As a teacher, I always let my kids go to the bathroom whenever the want. However, what you guys might not seem to realize, is that we teachers are also not able to go pee during class because we have to stay with students… you’re not alone in this struggle, we feel it too!

I started doing this in 2nd grade because the bathrooms were nasty
So I've been doing this for a few years. I have also noticed me changing and running low on underwear because of leakage. Im gonna guess I have a streched bladder. I hold it 7 hours every day out of habit. Sad isnt it? It doesn't necessarily hurts. More just like your bladder is racing for the gates but you close them and keep teasing your bladder by opening and closing you gates. It can also make you pee longer rather than just the 5 second wee. I've peed at least 10-12 seconds recently. Its because of all that stuff stored in your bladder, its whole family come and you gotta kick everyone outta the house. And that could take a while.
In 2022 at night i was really good with holding in pee when i had to go in the middle of sleep until i woke up. After a couple weeks the stinging pain in my abdomen when i peed was excruciating. Never again will i hold in my pee when i sleep.
