  • Taryl goes over what he had to do in order to make this obsolete pulley work on this Simplicity riding mower. Briggs & Stratton (or Breaks & Scrap'em as Taryl calls 'em) owns Simplecity and now that pulley is discontinued. What will Taryl do now?? The tractor is still perfectly fine besides that. Of course Taryl's got the know-how to get this mower up and running again like new. And as always... There's Your Dinner!!

Taryl, I am recently disabled due to nerve damage in my back. I have worked my whole life ( about 45 years) most of them at 60 hours and to be unable to provide as I see fit for my family is a painful reminder that I am not invincible. Because of my hours working I had a bunch of neglected lawn equipment. Not having the knowledge to fix them only added to my depression. My wife bless her soul, found you on the" interscreen " and made me watch your videos. Happy to say, you gave me the incentive to "take up a hobby" and learn to fix my stuff as well as some people in town who needed a bit of service. Thank you for your knowledge in a manner that makes it easy to learn. Keep up the good work.

I had a JD LX176 where the snap rings that locate that pulley would not stay in the shaft to locate it because the grooves in the shaft were completely messed up. It started making a squealing noise and the pulley had fallen down onto the transmission. I drilled two holes in the pulley and put two all thread studs sticking up one either side of the pulley. Then I put a cross strap between them made out of 1/8 inch x 1 flat strap pinched between two nuts. I could adjust the nuts up and down to make the pulley set where it used to set and the strap was right on the end of the shaft to keep the pulley from falling on down. That was 7 years ago and is still working fine.

I've found that Briggs changes the part number after so many years to make you think it's obsolete. You have to search for slightly newer models and compare the parts to see if they're the same. Often times its the exact same part with a different number. Briggs is far from the only one pulling this scam.

Hey Taryl I had this problem recently with my 2005 broadmoor. I discovered that this smaller pulley has been working fine on my mower all summer: Genuine OEM Tuff Torq 1A646025810 V-Groove Drive Pulley 4.25" - Kept the same belt just fine, very slight increase in speed. Will let you know if it turns out to be a slow moving grenade pin pull. Also noticed the belt runs deeper in the pulley on the original one and it runs along the outer edge on the alternate one - making a comparable functional circumference for the belt. Because the new pulley lacked the flanges to keep the belt on, the new pulley is supplied as a kit with a belt retainer. You should call your local rep.

I've got a 2011 Conquest (Simplicity). Love the thing... no mower deck, but has a Johnny Bucket Jr. Holy tamole is that little unit slick. I can tote almost 500# of firewood in it. It's got a tooth bar and She'll Dig. The best part... handling the weight in the front is no problem; it's got real, no bs, power steering. I'm talking Danfoss steering unit, cylinder that runs off the Tuff Torq, but still maintains the Tiny steering radius... What a blast. Also, the auto-choke briggs never gives me one bit of trouble. Only thing it needs a larger battery (Batt-ry, Taryll), but they left enough room that the big Yuasa that came with my excavator just fits Exactly in. Love Simplicity... the very last of real true full US made riders. Look at how well fitted those handles were he removed and how the fender pan was thicker/heavier than he expected. The new ones have a full Four Wheel suspension, and a high speed tranny to let you go faster over your bumpy yard. And you can find 'em used for Cheap 🐦. I'm telling ya, those Johnny Buckets are so handy and practical, you won't believe it. No loader arms to bend, you can Slam right into snow, ice, soil. Grab one if you can find one, but remember to mount it to something that can handle it, or just expect to give attention to your lighter machine's front end, or just sacrifice it and get a new one to mount the bucket on. I'm telling you, the tight turning circle with the stout Johnny Bucket is a hoot to use and so useful too 👍 ~

I have the same mower but an 07 or 08 . Taryl next time you do this you can save some time by unbolting the the hydro from the mower.
Just support the rear of the mower (engine hoist with straps ect) , disconnect the belt from the hydro pulley and I think it's just 4 bolts and the hydo with wheels still attached rolls right out. ( disconnect the rear neutral arm also I think).
We change the hydo oil every 200 hrs and got this procedure down so it's pretty fast.
One of the last years with the Vanguard ( Simplicity went with cheaper B&S engines later) so it's a keeper but didn't know about the pulley problem.
I wonder if TuffTorq possibly supplied the pulley with there unit.
I have 450 hrs on mine , how many hours on this one?

That’s a good fix, I ran into a similar problem fixing a Deere 214 the deck drive double pulley bearings where gone and the shaft was worn in half so I got two pulleys from tractor supply one I tig brazed a bearing into the other already had a bearing in it, I then used a press in bearing case from a car bearing to space the pulleys and welded them together, sometimes you have to improvise , overcome and adapt 👍

I took a worn shaft to the company machine shop once to get a new one turned.
Well they did a GREAT job, a perfect match right down to the worn areas. LOL
Six months into the first year Tahoe came out needed new wheel bearings. Chevy didn't even have a part number for them. Ended up going to a bearing store with them and they looked up the serial number on them. $20 and I was on my way home to install.

I have a similar design pulley system on my John Deere (ish) mower. The rear drive pulley will always be running at idle, use your parking brake to stop wearing down that pulley and belt! I'm pretty sure it's in the manual. I bought mine used so I didn't have the manual, I had just realized a LOT of driving components were running at idle unless the parking brake is engaged.

I bet if you would have Googled this pulley, you would have found a similar machine that uses it.

Ended up paying 5 bucks for it from a reputable German auto parts company.

Good, quick, workable fix, but as a hobby machinist it makes me cringe. Repair of that pulley is the perfect job for a small metal lathe. Bore the hub oversize, turn a bushing to fit, machine a keyway or spline in the new bushing to match the original, weld in the bushing and "there's your dinner". Every operation mentioned, including the keyway/spline, can be performed on a small lathe. Such a repair wouldn't be as fast or as inexpensive as welding but it would be a nicer option.

The solution to this problem I chose was drilling a hole in the center of a piece of 1&1/8 flat stock drilled tapped the out put shaft for a 1/4x20 bolt and welded the pulley to holes I drilled in the flat stock welded thru the holes. I pulled the trick off a half dozen times. The reasons I did that is some of the MTD mowers have that little vent on top of the axles which is needed if they were on fluid on the factory I can put fluid in there. Bad news is most of the time that pulley is right over top of them vents. I have not had one those jobs I did fail. It seems to be a little extra work but I leaned a lesson the first time I got a tractor that was low on fluid it's invaluable to be able to remove that big pulley not to mention of for some reasons you get one back with weeds and clothes line rope wrapped all around the axle and out put shaft. I did to myself after my neighbor passed away nobody came around to cut the grass for several weeks and by that time I was in a rush the morning I set out to cut the grass next door. I never saw or noticed the clothes line was even down in the grass. But boy my mower knew it wrapped around the spindles and that output shaft of the rear axle. it was like the mower did it on purpose.
