Makita DMP180z Portable Inflator - Overview and first use.

- Demonstrating my recently purchased Makita DMP180z portable inflator to top up the pressures on my W204 C350 Mercedes C-Class. In short, it's brilliant and I use it all the time.
This is the 18v unit that is compatible with Makita's LXT batteries.

My skins of choice are Makita normally, however due to no trigger lock, i grabbed the Milwaukee 12v unit this time round which just requires you to push a button and leave it be till it auto shuts off. What a shame Makita left out this one vital function, otherwise i would have been all over this one.
Thanks for your comment Stephen. I've mentioned before that the trigger lock isn't an issue for me but I know it is for a lot of people out there and it is a shame it isn't included.
Velcro works well for this, but shouldn't have to.
Hello ! Could you use this inflator as a substitute for a compressed air blow gun ? Just to blow out air out of crevisses after an interior car wash, or dust out of a clogged computer fan for example? Thanks !
Hi Pilipili, thanks for taking the time to watch my video. I don't think that you could use this compressor for that purpose as the flow rate is quite low, so it wouldn't be effective. It's great at inflating tyres though!

Great video, I am on the brink of purchasing one but could you tell me: If you inflated the tyre completely so that it automatically stops and you kept your finger on the trigger. Does it start again if you were to disconnect it from the valve? Meaning if there was a pleasure loss after it completed its cycle, does it turn back on or do you have to release and press the trigger again?

Yes it would continue as you are holding the trigger but you wouldnt be connected to anything so pumping to atmosphere. Not sure why that would be of any benefit though. It doesn't move enough air to act as an air blower/leaf blower.
@@ped0000 Thank you for the reply. The reason I am asking is I am wondering if it will fill a tank with air that I can use a small F nailgun on the tank. I am wondering that if I were to cable tie the trigger will it refill the tank as I am using the air intermittently with the nailgun?
It's rated at 120psi max. It takes about 4 mins to inflate my van tyre from 25 psi to 45psi. If you wanted to fill to 120 psi it would take ages as the 18v inflator cuts out after 5mins to cool down, then fires back up. My guess would be the motor just wouldn't be powerful enough to keep up with demand for a nailer even with light firing and you would be constantly pushing it to its limits and burning out the motor.
Hi Tijmen, I've just checked this tonight regarding disconnecting from the valve. Once the inflator has completed its cycle you can remove the filler from the valve and it won't restart. You need to release the trigger and pull it again to restart.
First use of mine tonight and really struggled getting it off the car tyre valve which meant it deflated
Nice video, TY for making and posting. Wish it had a trigger lock so you don't have to sit there holding it. If it has an auto shut off the why not? LOL

Just got it as part of a promotional thing and a trigger lock would be very useful. I use a zip tie as per Tools n Stuffs advice.
I have this pump. As it automatically shuts off, why is it necessary to hold the trigger? Crazy design fault. 😕
Hi Paul, thanks for watching my video. I suspect the trigger is required by legislation. My Makita hedge trimmer requires the user to hold down two buttons which is super awkward but quoted as being a safety feature.
Come on man, you do the same when taking it to pump station don’t you. And it’s not for long. 😂

No, it isn't setup to work like that unfortunately.

Hi Mark, as Gino says, yes you do the same way that you would when using an inflator on a garage forecourt. If you have filling a very flat tyre it's a nuisance but if you are just topping off it's not really a problem.

Yes you do. A few people have highlighted that this is an issue and it will be if you are inflating tyres from 0 Bar, but if you are only using it to top up then it's not such a big deal.
so you got to hold the trigger until pressure is reached.
Hi Jason, yes that's right. Lots of people in the comments say this is an issue, which it is if you are inflating from zero, but it's fine if you are topping up. You have the hold the trigger on an airline to inflate a tyre and this is no different.
Can I use to blowup air mattress?
Yes you can, assuming your mattress has the right kind of valve.

Yes, frustrating if you are inflating a fully flat tyre, but not really an issue when you are topping up.
Pretty ridiculous you can’t set and just leave it though. Surprising omission by Makita.
Thanks Pip for taking the time to comment. I believe this is a safety feature and none of my Makita tools enable you to lock on the trigger, even though it would be helpful, like with my hedge trimmer. I've not found it an issue but then I am not inflating tyres from zero.
big design fail to have no lock on button. imagine at the aide of the rad in the rain, holding on to that thing to too ykur tires off, big fail my makita. and for the price too, Milwaukee, dewalt, ryobi, etc... take your pickings they all have lockable switches.
I'll be honest, I've never found that a problem, but then I am never inflating a fully flat tyre. Since I was already invested in the Makita platform, it was cheaper to buy this than any other brand and I wouldn't change my decision.
