- In this video we introduce Traditional Midnight Black. Midnight Black blackens aluminum, provides a dark blueish black on steel, a brown finish on zinc or galvanized steel, and a dark brown to black on copper.

is the clearcoat absolutely necessary? I have a few brass and copper edc items that I would like to darken. I have done other types of patinas before and I have never had the patina come off without using a sealant. I really like how dark this gets. and I would like to try it.
We recommend a clear coat for all applications (especially steel) but if you choose not to use a clear coat just know that over time it is likely to change. That's just what happens with unprotected metal.
Does more blue/oil slick come out the longer the patina is on steel?
It will typically go darker rather than more blue.
Are you rinsing with water and letting the piece dry between applications?
Yes, though we usually will pat dry with paper towels instead of just letting it dry after we rinse it with water.
The midnight black I got is brown fluid and not blue like in the video, has the product changed?
It has not changed, and it is perfectly normal. It stains the bottle but it is fine to use and does not alter the results any.
Can you use this on a skull with silver metal paint?
The Midnight Black would not do anything to the Silver Metal Coating unfortunately. It will work on the bronze, brass, and copper, just not the silver. If you want some black on the Silver Metal Coating, try the Dye Oxides or Universals.
Does this patina work on gold?
We do not test on gold or silver unfortunately.
