- At the Institute of Military Technology, TFBTV's Corey Wardrop discusses the Allen & Thurber Pepperbox Pistol.
We first look at a timeline of similar firearms, and discuss some of the reasons the firearms were used more for civilian than military purposes. We discuss what pepperbox pistols (commonly also called pepperbox revolvers) are by definition, and discuss the timeline and ignition systems used.
Thanks to Rock Island Auction company for the use of their matchlock pepperbox image, with the previously-sold item also found here: www.rockislandauction.com/det...
We discuss a little trivia (is the Gatling a Pepperbox?), and then dive into the Allen & Thurber, and its the namesake Ethan Allen. We discuss the timeline of the Allen company, advantages and disadvantages of the pepperbox, its use, and ultimately its demise.

Good job on your first video, looking forward to some awesome historical based videos!
This man needs tighter shirts if he ever hopes to hold a candle to James.
Big Herm Don’t forget the tactical athletic shorts he wears. They always crack me up.
Cool, James was right, Corey is awesome. Didn't think that I would care about a pepper box, but it was a great video.
I think your a great fit for tfb video was great, congrats on your new gig
I hope to see more from this guy! Great info I learned alot too
Love the two hand tactical hold on the pepperbox. Hehehe...
For personal and -home- wagon defence.
Thanks for the first video, I liked it, you are quite enthusiastic/passionate.
I am eagerly waiting for your next video.
Awesome video, Corey!
I love the enthusiasm you show throughout this video. Had I not been a TFBTV fan for years, I would have figured you for a regular, given how well put together and professional you were.
TFB! I wanna see more of Mr. Wardrop! Bring him back!
Now if only I could get my hands on a pepperbox, as well as that old Walker...
Hey, some new stuff! Great first video man. Lots of enthusiasm there, I like it!
Did TFB finally give us a replacement for Alex C and his videos on badass historical guns? Perhaps. Looking forward to more content from you dude. Well done first video.
First saw one of these in " Rooster Cogburn and the Lady" . Welcome aboard Corey, great video. Unsolicited advice for public performing: Speak half as fast as you think you should and you will be right on time and not run out of breath and stumble. It's not as easy as people think. I go back to old interviews I did and think "Holy shit man, slow down!"
Love the variety and thanks for jumping into your first video!
Damn bra, you bring some enthusiasm to the table my man. I'm diggin' that. Looking forward to more Homeslice.
Seems like he's really excited to do these vids, its really nice to see. Great vid, can't wait for more.
Great job on the video. Can't wait to see the next one.
This video is amazing. You did absolutely amazing on this piece.
Great first video. Looking forward to more of these.
Finally a TFB guy besides James who knows how to talk.
Competition has arrived on the Gun Jesus marketplace.
At first I didn't think so, Corey's charisma is more like James' than Ian's, but this is certainly a fresh new take, once you get used to the stereotypised "American" enthusiasm. I mean, nobody can touch Gun Jesus, that's clear, but this guy is really good. Good info, good presentation, inlaid with jokes...
Loved the video! Please keep them coming
This is what you guys need to be doing. Keep this up. Thank you.
Enjoyed. Looking forward to more.
Congrats on your first video!
Great start! Can't wait to see more of OUR history.
Excellent! I'm going to enjoy his content. Now we just need to get him some short shorts.
I don't even like old guns, but this sure was informative and educational. Keep up the good work!
Good job. I like these history of guns videos.
Good job. Wait for more.
Ya did good! Looking forward to seeing more.
if you calm down a bit you will do very well. good video nice change of pace from TFB's normal stuff
Great video awesome information!!!!!
This was an enjoyable new style of video similar to Ian at Forgotten Weapons. Looking forward to more of these from you guys!! Any chance of bring Ian on for some collabs?
Good job on your first video.
would love to see more of the pepperbox and allen thurber DA revolver, see them sell for pretty cheap but barely any videos of someone shootingthem. been interested in getting one.
Loved this video
We were knocking a wall in an old house and found one of those. Had ivory grips on it, im from ireland so it was a surprise
good job! Not boring, interesting, and lively video. Keep it up! James might have some competition
Great video.
I literally was talking about this firearm today along with the Girandoni air rifle at the office.
Marc Pascual "There were no bang-bang-bang repeating guns in the time of the Founding Fathers! They never imagined such weapons!"
"Oh, really..."
so same range as the reformation...the pepperbox :} good video
Corey, how many lines did you do off of James abs before you shot this? In all seriousness, looking forward to the new content!
All of them. -Corey
I like the boom-boom-boom-boom part. Very much.
no not boring interesting how simple engineering can work in this stuff
Please do vids on the Gatling guns.
Have to reign in that eagerness with a bit more rehearsal time, but outstanding first venture.
@capandball also made an awesome video on the Allen and Thurber pepperbox 👍🏼
Awesome, James for the new shit, Miles for the military stuff, and this dude for the older stuff.
And fuck off Miles haters, god forbid he's actually a vet who does vids on shit he knows...
Thanks for that brah! -Miles
I just assembled a Hoppes repro single action Ethan Allen pepperbox from a kit. Not very good for feeding yourself or the best choice for war but for the backstreets of Boston just the thing for close encounters of the violent kind.
wouldn't the lack of shielding on the final example virtually eliminate sympathetic fire. The fact that the black would be channeled through the port the escape around the hammer avoid this problem?
*The reason why a Gatling Gun wouldn't be a pepperbox is because it only feeds one barrel, and the others rotate while a pepperbox has a shot in each chamber*
I just picked up one of those exact pepper box pistols.
Fully functional. For $1150 cdn
Only to find out. Retail is $3500 usd....🙂
Can't wait to fire it.
So just what was the actual risk of sympathetic fire? Could it be eliminated with proper maintenance and shooting practices or was it just a random unpreventable risk with every shot from a firearm loaded with multiple rounds? And if so can the risk be roughly numerically calculated, like "one in twenty thousand rounds"? It's an essential bit of context in order to know if the allure of the pepperbox over the revolver (revolving cylinder) was due to a real or exaggerated danger of sympathetic fire.
What is the largest caliber pepper box?
Please give this man more air time
Hey Corey I've always thought working at a military arms museum sounds pretty much like a dream job, what kind of requirements do you guys have for curators/other employees?
Depends on the museum. Shoot me an email. :) coreyrwardrop@gmail.com. - Corey
My grandfather used to own a pepperbox. I think he traded or sold it. I don't know wether that was a good sale or not
Depends on what he got for them. They sell for about £500 to a £1000 here depending on make, model, condition, etc. Allen & Thurbers go around £500 to £700 from what I've seen.
I happen to have one (6 cylinder) given as a gift, wish I knew where to get the ammo lol
Sharps Pepperbox?
Yes this is good!
I appreciate the education history
A black powder guy? I approve!!!!
love this huh
My only question is how do I get a hold of one.
I got you!

Just relax. Talk to the camera like you’re talking to someone who is getting a tour of the museum. I look forward to your future content bro
The only thing that Revoler(Colt pattern) superior over Pepperbox is weight.
I think Grandpa Pepperbox is still cool.
1:05 did someone mention supernatural?
pepper box is last line of defense weapon
give me one
Slow down a bit, there's some good Info here. You just need to present the info in a more linear fashion.
The Colt Patterson revolver was patented in in 1837 and the patent expired in 1857, which is why Remington stepped in with the 1858 Army Revolver. Chain Fire. I've been shooting black powder revolvers since the early 80's with no chain fire problems. You really need to do more research. What made the Colt revolver practical was the invention of the percussion cap. This guy is hurting my brain with his historical inaccuracies. There where a few, and just a few Flintlock "Revolvers" but they where big and clunky and not practical to carry.
First!
This dude isn't ian
full-time picture although collapse back slowly increased institution leg prosecutor.
Already better than Miles
No love from Josh! Damn!
-Miles
Josh probably loves Veggie MREs and the driftwood
