- Brownells Gun Techs Steve Ostrem and Keith Ford are again at Rock Island Auctions to show us another example of firearm exotica. Today, it's the well-equipped gentleman's EDC pistol of the early 1800s: a pepperbox pistol by John Rigby of Dublin. The pepperbox was a muzzleloading cap-and-ball pistol with multiple rotating barrels, making it a predecessor of the modern revolver. This Rigby gun has five barrels AND a double action trigger. It fits easily in your pocket and can deliver all five shots as fast as you can pull the trigger, making it the Smith & Wesson J-frame of its day! The Rigby was also an expensive gun. This beautifully made and preserved example comes in a fitted wood case with all its original accoutrements, including a ram rod, bullet mold, powder flask, nipple wrench, and even an oiler. If you're wondering… gunmaker John Rigby opened his Dublin shop in 1775; in 1865 his grandson opened the London branch of the firm, still in business today, which became famous for "best quality" shotguns and hunting rifles.
