    It's dirt cheap when compared to actual security cameras and it's EXTREMELY easy to set up. You're expecting way too much lol. Your expectations are probably that of a hard wired security camera that cost no less than $500.

    So far I only have one of the 5 up. czcams.com/users/postUgkxOXxsTZ3ptV_Pk0fFl8bNZvVqeoqBQFwe My son ran out of time, with motion detector etc. I have it over my garage door. It works great. Have seen a couple of cats, my dogs, when I am out front. And had a bee buzzing around right in front of it. It works very well. It even shows the neighbour's driveway, but only shows movement just past my own, which is very long. I highly recommend them.

    I hope you contacted ring, apprise them of your findings just in case it was a defect, replaced the item and then let us know if the second item worked the same as the first, that would be a true assessment on this camera in my opinion.

    I'm all for an honest review and appreciate you gave just that. But I'm confused as to why you feel the quality was SO bad that it can't be recommended. It was as good as you need for security purposes, and the audio cutting out could be the connection outside of the device. I've had such horrible experiences with other big names, I'm just not sure what the expectation was here.

  • @icyhot9783
    @icyhot9783 Před 3 lety +25

    I don't get some of the negative comments! Wired 16 channel cameras in 4k are in a totally different realm. That's pretty firmly in pro/commercial territory. You have to have the ability and space to run the cables, most homeowners don't have this ability or space to crawl around in to wire up. 1080p is just fine if you're trying to keep tabs on kids playing, someone prowling around, getting notifications for motion, etc. If you're looking to read license plates then go 4k, but not too many of those in most back/side yards. 4K also generates huge files, so you will need in house mega storage array or drive to house that much data.
    I've read if your wifi goes out, you don't get any videos. True, but if your wifi goes out, you don't get any alerts from hardwired stuff either! The other challenge you run into is how to access your videos/alerts when you're away. That takes some tech acumen to do and done poorly, the intruder on your network will do as much or more damage to you and family if your network isn't secured properly. Ring may be a bit on the pricy side, but they do a great job of providing value. I looked at tons of options. Have the ability to crawl around and wire stuff up. I even had enough space to drop down cables for 16 cameras, house hard drives, etc, etc. In the end, All that cable takes time and money. Hard drives wear out and can crash and cost money to replace. I have been replacing storage array grade drives at least once per year at this point. Those aren't cheap. It's also much tougher to get access to them without plenty of risk to your network and data, which means even more hardware and know how.
    In the end, there's no perfect system. Everything has its pros and cons. I searched and searched for months trying to decide which way to go and in the end I went with Ring. They cost a bit more then most of the "generic" offerings, but less than half or better than the commercial grade, tough to install stuff I compared. Ring has a very easy to use app. Other family members have to use it as well, so easy keeps them off my back. In the end, ring ticked most of the checkboxes and we've loved them. 1080p is plenty of resolution for 95% of applications. if you're buying a dash cam, by all means, get the 4k or you won't be able to make out license plates beyond the car directly in front/back of you. For general home security use, 4k is way overkill for most people. We get better than accepted images from our ring cams and night vision is impressive. Also haven't had any audio issues with ours. I wouldn't call them HiFi by any means, but have no problem making out what is said. We use the audio feature quite frequently.

    I have the ring stick up cameras as well and I am experiencing the same problem with the audio as you are. But my main concern is that the camera doesn’t always pick up motion when it supposed to and it seems like it has a mind of its own switching from daytime to nighttime so I don’t really care for this camera much especially for the price that I had to pay.

    I am doing an RING RV Security System. I have all outer hatches and the door on contact sensors, I mounted a Smoke/CO Sensor next to the propane alarm, and am looking at these cams for the interior just to set up as a way to capture any thief that may enter despite the alarm going off. On the exterior I want to mount the spotlight version as it has a siren that can be triggered from the app. The system uses very little power, working on hardwiring everything. My only beef is the lack of local video storage. As most of the time I will be using my hotspot, but I think in settings I can dial the system down to use a small amount of data.

    Watched this video as I'm considering buying one of Ring's indoor cams. I have several outdoor Ring cams (floodlights, spotlights & doorbell) and every single one of them has issues with latency and sound. The sound is extremely choppy, much worse than what is shown in your video. I have the fastest wifi connection available (gigabit) through Fios and have their router plus 2 extenders to cover the whole house and it's apparently still not enough for these cams to work properly. I think you literally have to put your router right next to the camera to get a decent performance from it.
    I might consider getting a couple of Ring chime pros to help with the wifi signal.

    • @talljohn5350
      @talljohn5350 Před 2 lety

      Your best bet is to get mesh router system. Eero is friendly with ring and you can get them for not too much and if you place one close to your cameras it normally solves any issues. Would make a lot more sense to just have a better built in antenna. Don’t know why ring refuses to do this.

    Still getting started with mine, model 5UM7E5, but what has me perturbed off the bat is that I fully charged the battery yesterday. I plugged it in and set it up in my app which already had my doorbell connected and has for some time. As soon as I wanted to view the stickup battery cam, it said it needed to update. Ok, I placed it on a window sill facing outside and let it do it’s thing. This morning, maybe 16 hours later, when I went into the app to view the camera, it couldn’t show me the feed and said it was already down to 12% battery.
    I’m recharging it now, but so far this isn’t giving me any hope that this $100 camera is going to be useful AT ALL if the battery dies within one day’s time. Something can’t be right here

    What would you then recommend? I like the fact that its batterypowered, which is what dragged me in the direction of the ring.
    One thing I miss in the Ring is to be able to do local storage, so I don't have to pay a monthly subscription. That is a deal braker for me.
    Currently, I have the NetAtmo welcome. Its ok, but the video quality sucks and there isn't two way audio,

    Am I the only wondering why he skipped going into details about the RSSI reading of the strength of Wi-Fi from the camera to the router? It doesn't matter if you got fiber on your street or not. If camera is too far from your router, even if you have a good router, that's still an issue. What is the RSSI readings in Ring app health stats?

    I think the quality is good enough but I agree with you. Other brands look better. I still purchased one to compliment the doorbell. And with Rings community online, it’s probably still the best choice. Im sure they will improve the video and quality in future hardware. I’ll just upgrade when that happens.

Trying to watch things back i find that it keeps glitching, sound goes distorted & then its freezing. • @M8YM8

    I think the audio quality is redundant. The image is clear enough to capture an intruders face for the police and the motion sensors will give you early warning. I have mine connected to a chime that plays an alarm after hours

    I have had mine since Christmas. I got it as a Christmas present and the camera is very clear. However, I found out that after the 30 day free period you have to pay a monthly subscription price to make all of the functions keep working. That is total crap! It still alerts me if there is motion but without paying a monthly charge, I can't adjust my motion settings so it alerts me every time the neighbor's car moves in their driveway so over all, I'm not very satisfied with it.

    I have a ring doorbell, four stick up cams, four floodlight Cams and two spotlight cams. I agree the stick up cam has the worst audio and the video quality isn’t as good as a floodlight cam or spotlight cam. I think they must be using a smaller chip sensor. They do what I need for them to do at this price point. I have two stick up cams is in my shop and one stick up cam on a pan tilt in my garage the last stick up cam I put out if I leave the house. If someone breaks in it’s just their to continue recording what they’re doing. My entire house and half acre are covered are covered by ring.

    I have this camera and the 2nd gen version plug in and it’s not as bad as yours but the 2nd gen is much better (maybe because is plug in version) but I found that with Ring devices, the electrical versions are always great all around but the battery versions are average to below average. Luckily I don’t need battery cameras but ended up with this due to a huge discount at a local Best Buy otherwise I would not have bought it. I have a few neighbours that also love ring plug in devices but don’t like battery due to video/sound quality issues.
