- I don't usually talk about pop music on here, because as we all know, none of us particularly like it. However Olivia Rodrigo is currently one of the biggest pop stars in the world right now and she seems to be drawing a lot of influence from rock and indie bands. What does this mean? Are the masses actually craving guitars and riffs? Is she the gateway music to draw more people into the light? What do you think?

I agree with the last line. But there are definitely some songs that give me a feeling I’ve never felt before. Runaway by Kanye. Family Tree by Ethel Cain. Posing For Cars by Japanese Breakfast. Dust by Frank Ocean. I’m really not that old though, only 25, and maybe there are songs that already exist like them.

I really like how she creates the song structures. It’s very unique and combines indie and alt rock together. She’s definitely got talent.
I don’t think Deja Vu sounds anything like Cruel Summer despite having a shouty bridge which isn’t musically quantifiable really. She gave credits to quash the issues surrounding it but I don’t think it would have held up if it went to “court” or something, on further analysis.
Agreed. I think she could have easily won in court but her team probably didn't want her to be stuck in a court case so early in her career. I really think it was a bunch of people that took advantage of an extremely young naive teenage musician at the time. Which sucks. Hopefully she gets better lawyers
Olivia did credit Taylor's music for inspiring her early released music. It's so easy to see Deja Vu is incredibly inspired by Cruel Summer, and I think she even talked about it herself. She used to talk alot about Taylor Swift in the past, but due to the controversies saying she is copying Tay's music and people literally started calling her the "wannabe Taylor Swift", she just dropped everything about her ( atleast in public domain ), and start exploring more music genres that Taylor doesn't really touch so people can actually stop criticizing her. I can't think of one Taylor song that sounds like an early 2000's angsty song ( because like duh, everyone knows she writes exceptional lyrics even when she first started, and she started out as a country, not a pop singer or whatnot ) except maybe Haunted, but that's probably because the overall vibes, music and instrument gives off massive Avril Lavigne vibes.
I think a few tracks on Speak now have an emo-rock vibe. As you, say, 'Haunted' is just Evernescence, but Innocent and Better than Revenge lean that way too. Thankfully she got over her imitation phase quickly@@eclipsewaves
@@eclipsewaves Yeah giving credit in conversation in a discussion by saying I’m so inspired by Taylor Swift or this song is inspired by Cruel Summer is different than actually giving writing credits that give Taylor Swift money. A lot of people say songs are inspired by other songs without having to credit them. Taylor didn’t deserve the writing credits because she didn’t write the song and the songs don’t sound similar enough. I’d say better than revenge was heavily inspired by Misery Business and gives a 2000s angsty vibe but at the time, it wasn’t as popular to criticise artists for inspiration. Regardless, I hope Olivia can manage to establish her own name without people thinking she isn’t a real artist.
@@interstate1049 Good point but I think Speak Now is more of a pop country album, if that makes sense. A suitable comparison would be her next album, Red. So tracks like Haunted or Innocent gets overshadowed by songs like Dear John or Enchanted. Though now that you said it, Innocent, Haunted and Better than Revenge does give off massive Evanescence vibes.
As a 44yo w/ a 10yo daughter, I can tell you that Olivia Rodrigo is big in our house. She's one of the popstars that I truly don't mind hearing...even if it is more often than I mind. She's a real talent and uses interesting arrangements and vocals. Yes, it's all compressed to hell, but isn't everything these days (unfortunately)?

Check out her “Tiny Desk Concert” performance… it’s somewhat acoustic (instruments still plugged in) but less pop/studio mixed after effects. It’s very musical and quite impressive; you’re going to love it!

I am a grandma and I love Olivia! Her first album was wonderful. My 25 year old daughters don’t like her but I think her music is so much fun!
My teenage daughters introduced me to Olivia Rodrigo's music. I really loved the song 'Driver's License' from the first album. I watched her do a Tiny Desk Concert and was really impressed by how she seemed to be so immersed in her own performance leaving nothing on the table. I listened to the new track yesterday with my daughters and I too thought of Icky Thump immediately, telling them excitedly about it and also what a stylophone is. I might let them drag me along to a gig 😉
I don't have kids but I also discovered Olivia Rodrigo via her Tiny Desk concert performance and was pleasantly impressed. I had heard her name dozens of time and I thought it was another teenage "artist" out of Disney channel, but that really changed my mind and I now consider myself a fan!
She's touring next year and in some shows the Breeders are opening for her. Yes I know they have been around longer! But you and your kids can enjoy both 😊
I like her music. I'm not even close to the target audience and TBH she made me kind of question my musical "snobbery". There's a lot of talented pop artists out there and it's easy to lob bombs over originality and influences. She writes good songs with devices that keep my toes tapping. The fact that I've been on this planet for 54 years means I've listened to a lot of music and Olivia Rodrigo if anything has bought me back to enjoy the current crop of pop singers. Like you say, we're not the target audience, but talented artists shine in whatever genre you discover them in, and a renowned artist can shine across many genres. I think she has the chops to do that. Now time for a bit of Penguin Cafe Orchestra...

And, like you, when I first heard this song yesterday (my 18 year old nephew played it for me and asked me what I thought of it) the thing that struck me the most was that distinctly "dissonant" element - and very forward metal sound - being injected into what is clearly an upbeat pop song. Very cool.

That riff reminds me of the first part of the baseline to the Beatles' Lady Madonna. Her music sounds pretty good to me - I'm about 40 years too late for the lyrics to mean anything profound, but I guess that's just how things go as you age. Now if she wrote a song about negotiating finance on a new car lease, I'd be on board.

@Laynestaley455 definitely agree. I love and listen to all sorts of music, but I'm in my 50s now and some lyrics just don't relate anymore. Doesn't mean it's not a cool song, or that I don't respect the talent and skill though.

I'm 38, and I really dig Olivia Rodrigo's work. She is a truly talented little lady, and I actually go out of my way to listen to her stuff once in awhile. She's one of the few pop artists that I actually like. I'm primarily a 1970s-2000's rock guy.
I have to say I am always impressed by the breadth of your musical references Justin. Not that I would expect anything less, but when you mentioned Fatima Mansions that was pushing the envelope again man.
Her parents are Gen Xers so she grew up listening to Pixies, Afghan Whigs etc. So I consider her stuff laying that over the contemporary indie and pop influences. Been saying for a while she’s the only of the super mainstream pop-pop artists worth the time of day

I don’t know I like Billie Eilish music more because it’s something original and fresh. So many genres that jazzy 20-60s Julie london vocals Etc something more interesting for my taste! But I like Olivia too, but for me millennial , who grew up in the rock era of the 80/90s what Olivia is doing is nothing new but I still like it because it reminds me of that time
Cracking tune! The bassline reminded me of 'Warning' by Greenday and 'Hash Pipe' by Weezer - but surely the vocal layers over a descending progression (the prechorus when she's lying in the truck) is a nod to the master of guitar pop production - Jeff Lynne (of ELO/Travelling Wilburys/George Harrison)?
The point you make at 3:45 reminded me of a quote from Axl Rose, where he was talking about writing music, and he said something like, 'I'll write something, and think it sounds really good and say to myself, 'Yeah'! That's better than Zeppelin.' Then, I'll be in my car listening to the radio and go, 'Oh! It IS Zeppelin.'
It's funny, the intro reminds me of something, but I can't quite put my finger on what (ironic). Weirdly, it sounded even more like the thing I was thinking of when Justin played it on the guitar without the rest of the musical ornamentation. It'll come to me.
On a related note, story time:
I watched the NetFlix series Painkiller (I can't recommend it enough, really good), and a song played in one episode, and I said to my partner, 'That voice is familiar.' A few seconds later, I said, 'I reckon that's Iggy Pop... but the backing vocals are by the B-52s, so that's weird.' I was well-chuffed as the song was 'Candy', by Iggy Pop, with Kate Pierson from the B-52s - not one I'd ever heard before :D

My 12 year old just introduced me to her music today. She said I think you're going to love this mommy. I was pleasantly surprised.
…also hearing a bit of Cocteau Twins and The Breeders in her vibe. Listening to music is considered practicing in the classical world and it’s part of a musician’s daily ‘practice’. It’s good to hear you encouraging everyone to do what all my teachers have told me thru the years. Deep listening and focused attention are some of the muscles that get strengthened. So, for me, listening to music is not a form of passive entertainment or consumption. It’s an act of work. Over the years, I’ve also noticed that kids trained on string instruments (within a classical education) are better able to concentrate and have a centered calmness to their demeanor as opposed to their non-musical peers. What instrument is your daughter learning?

My daughter (17) is a big fan, her music makes her happy-so all I give a shit about. I find it odd the critics over analyzing things or comparing, why? if something is enjoyable to you or others, let it go?

There are lots of good hooks on that first record. Sure, a few of those songs are derivative but there is no denying her skills.
I feel like she just has hip Gen X parents and maybe got a good dose of things like Romeo Void, Suburban Lawns, Adam Ant, Missing Persons, Elvis Costello..there’s a LOT of 80s vibes in there. Not my demographic either, as a 42 year old man, but I kinda dig what she’s doing. It’s got an old school punk snottiness at times. It’s youthful and playful. Could be worse🤷🏻♂️

I feel if you like it it's supposed for you and I really like Rodigro's songs. I don't see an issue with her and her cowriter finding inspiration in bands and artists from the past. Everyone has done that and at least she has a major part in writing her songs. Not many pop acts who can say that nowadays

In no way disrespecting the work of the artists you’ve listed, I don’t know 90% of those names. They don’t have nearly as much mainstream influence as someone like Olivia rodrigo

I’m 54, I was introduced to her music by a younger friend in their 20’s, Olivia is pretty talented, she has a great voice, can play an instrument or two, and writes good songs, what’s not to like!
I don’t know that I’d consider them fully pop, because their genre is all over the place. …but I’ve been sucked in by twenty one pilots. A lot of people judge them by a few of their commercial hits but Tyler Joseph started in his parents’ basement in Ohio and he still lives there today. His voice is unique and he writes every lyric and plays multiple instruments and produces most of their music. Best live shows I’ve ever seen. Such a musical talent. I like Olivia okay but I haven’t been fully sucked in yet.
I was a huge Twenty One Pilots fan back in their blurryface and trench eras. I loved how their music was all over the place genre wise, but you could ostensibly tell how much effort Tyler Joseph puts into the creative process. I think that's what also draws people like me to Olivia Rodrigo

I would love someone to find one song by any artist that doesn't have a similar beat or melody to another song. All the music out there has shared sounds of earlier music. The problem is Olivia's music is very popular, so people are looking to make money off of her.

I like that the underpinning bass/guitar riff is actually 1,4,5 instead of 1,3,5 - just a wee bit different and used a lot less than 1,3,5 from the ol’ rock days. I have to concur with the commenter you highlighted, that it’s “not for me” (I’m 59 but still a new music junkie) but c’mon, guitars are back! 🎉
She's got talent, it's funny that I was asking myself last week "Why do I like this song? I'm 48? This isn't pop music right?" The truth is it reminds me of when I started to like the Beastie Boys when the released Check Your Head. It's not a lazy album, you can feel that a lot of work was put into it by the artist. Plus, anyone that writes their own music, can play an instrument and can carry a tune without a voice trainer should be given a chance. Like a few people have commented, the lyrics are poppy 20yr old lyrics but you can feel that the music is more evolved.

I’m a rocker and I love it. There’s a lot of fun and personality in her music but it’s not too pop. I can envision Rodrigo becoming a serious rock artist down the line. Even The Beatles were pop in the beginning. PS I think Dave Stewarts son is the guitarist on this track. Great video!

I really enjoyed her first album!
I loved Brutal even if it was overly familar (i knew one version from a Doctor Who episode, not the Elvis Costello original). So far, I've enjoyed both Vampire and Bad Idea Right from the new album. One of the few mainstream pop acts i enjoy, the other being Billie Eilish who often gives me Alice Cooper vibes as she slips into horror territory here and there.

Olivia Rodrigo's song "Bad Idea" is in the key of E Mixolydian, which gives the song a rock feel. It is a sophisticated pop rock effort. Rodrigo was a Disney teen actress, and her musical transition likely owes a lot to record producer Dan Nigro. It is probably too early to tell whether Rodrigo will significantly contribute to the pop rock genre, as she has only just stepped out of her teen actress and singer period.

Human brain seeks patterns in music, and because of that the musical key is critical when composing a song because it effects the mood, feel, and overall sound of the song. L.A. Woman by The Doors is in a Mixolydian scale, and if you recall that song it does have a bluesy rock sound and feel to it.@@creamwobbly

Baseline reminds me of the guitar part in Lady Madonna. It's from a pretty obscure band, I doubt anyone will notice. Also (and probably even closer to) In the Midnight Hour.

I can remember the bit at 6:10 from when *I* was her age, though which song it came from escapes me.
I had never actually listened to her before because I just thought it was just another young girl pop star. Which I guess she is? Regardless as you put this video out, I thought I would check out something from her. Good 4 U came up (444M views on here btw, fucking ridiculous) and I thought, eh, I guess it's okay but it sounds too autotuned and stuff so I looked for a live version. There's a performance of it on SNL, I was proved wrong. The girl can really sing and she was backed by a full band, love to see it.
Maybe I will give her a proper chance in the future, who knows.

I think if we are looking at the main charts Justin then yes...what gets picked up by radio is abysmal but there are artist out there doing brilliant things - Just take Jessie Ware. Not a single song from her "What's your Pleasure?" or her latest "That! Feels! Good!" was ever played on the radio and both albums are filled to the brim with intelligent, danceable, hugely enjoyable songs. I hightly suggest you give her a listen . An interview with her would even be great 😯

It is definitely the riff from "I'm Your Venus" by Shocking Blue (1968), which was covered by Bananarama in 1986. But given a modern twist.

Not really. It’s in a major key for a start, which puts it much more firmly in the territory of “midnight hour” and “Lady Madonna”. “Venus” is resolutely in a minor key.

I think there's still a lot of pop artists that aren't shit, but generally those artists don't get much publicity because they aren't industry-made. Now this song I like well enough, though it probably still won't make me turn on the radio again (I was a huge pop fan in the 80's and part of the 90's, but that time is over).
No regarding any similarities to be found in music, I really think that's not exclusive to pop music. I'm a metalhead and I'm listening to new stuff all the time, which very often means band I didn't listen to before and most of the time, I hear some similarities to artists I already know. Part of it is probably because the human brain is wired to find patterns in the unknown, but more often than not, it's just that you hear the artists the new ones took inspiration from (which you can find out if you're reading a bit into the bands background). It has always been this way, and as long as it isn't blatant copyism, I like artists honoring their sources of inspiration.

Being at the cusp age of liking Olivia's music and also being fan of Elvis Costello. His response to someone who said her song brutal was very similar to pump it up was PERFECT. "This is fine by me, X. It’s how rock and roll works. You take the broken pieces of another thrill and make a brand new toy. That’s what I did." I think a lot of artists should learn a lesson in not being overtly litigious specially with up-and-commers. Specially if it's just like a few seconds of a 3 mins song. Specially if you're already a huge star who's like a billionaire. I understand about asking for a share, if the artist being ripped off wasn't able to profit off of it or is a much smaller musician.
I don't know that I completely buy the idea that music should be segregated by age. I grew up listening to music by people who were dead long before I was born and weren't writing for children even in their time. I listened to the Beatles long before I understood the meaning behind their songs. I'm not generally into the pop written for a younger audience, because much of it deals with subjects I've matured past (well, mostly), but if a song is a banger, then it is a banger.

Off topic a little but about songs sounding alike. You mentioned "Pump It Up" by Elvis Costello-did you ever notice how much the verses sound like the verses of "Wild Wild West" by the Escape Club?
