Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series review: Updated 2023 LC79 GXL cab-chassis 4x4 V8 ute test (GVM upgrade)

  • The Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series has been updated for 2023 and beyond. But is it the right ute for you?
    In this review, Matt Campbell lets you know what the LC79 single-cab ute is like to live with. With a huge 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 engine, five-speed manual and 4x4, it's unique in the world of utes and pick-up trucks in Australia.
    Toyota has just upgraded the entire LC 70 range with an improved gross vehicle mass (GVM), so it's more capable than ever.
    And the brand has added improved safety technology in the form of a new autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system that is offered on the single-cab, dual-cab, Troopy (Troop Carrier) and wagon models.
    But as good as all those improvements are, there are still some things that could rule out the LC79 - or any 2023 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series - for you. You'll have to watch to find out what they are!

    Matt I like that you have highlighted what the 70 series is for. There are so many other options out there for city bois who need flash mod cons and can’t even operate a manual vehicle. Yes, you could buy two LDVs for the price, but you’d need four of them to last the life span of a Landcruiser out bush. The model you have tested would be the last one I would buy, pedestrian & cyclist detection? The last thing I’d what where I live (on a station, in the outback) is the brakes to come on by themselves just because there is a roo on the edge of the road. It’s the tech & electronics that always fails first in the scrub. I guess what’s annoyed me over the years of watching/reviews, especially recently is they are generally done by a cap wearing city fellas who might know cars but havent spent F/A time out bush. The difficulty in procuring a new one, & all the electronic crap will mean the old ones will retain high values for sometime to come. Which is why I’ve decided to tidy up my 2001 turbo 6 single cab & drive it for another 400,000km😉

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  Před rokem +4

      Thanks - good feedback. I have spent time in the outback and was from the country (despite being a cap-wearing city boi now, if you can call the blue mountains the city) and you need not worry about the AEB system braking for a kangaroo - those bouncy morons are too confusing and erratic for camera systems to understand what they will do next. Some systems (Volvo) has large animal detection but that’s for elk, deer and moose, which move slowly and predictably.
      And don’t just think the electronics and tech only fail in the scrub. They fail in “the big smoke” a lot, too!

    We had a BT50 for 4 years, which was unreliable in the few trips we took. I had planned a WA from Qld with friends n my wife said she wasn’t going in the BT, so she told me to buy a Cruiser, which I did. We’ve now had 7 very reliable yrs with being to WA twice out of our Dual Cab Cruiser.. Love it.. 🍻🍻

    I have a single cab, did some aftermarket mods to it and it goes along very nicely. One thing I do enjoy is that you actually have to drive the car unlike all these other vehicles where you are sort of a 1/2 driver 1/2 passenger as they do all that lane stuff, auto braking for trees as you back down the driveway, etc....I enjoy the morning knowing that I have to drive the ute later that day and the family car takes a well earned rest in the garage.

    I'm more than happy with mine and I quite like the austere interior, I don't wand electric windows or central locking as it gets in the way when camping for me anyway. Love the engine performance as it never seems to fuss as it is always heavily loaded and throw the caravan on and it makes little difference. Like you say steering feels a bit vague as do the brake compared to my hilux but certainly get the job done as you say.

    Well covered Matt. I can imagine all the Toyota lovers lining up to garrote you now! Let me just add a couple of thoughts, as a previous Toyota 75 series owner. The tail-lights are the same ones I had in 1985, as are the heater and A/C control levers and cables. Plenty of them left over in the parts bin, I'd imagine? Would have thought that the engineers could have added the extra width to the axle by now, but again there must be plenty left over from 1985? But still, plenty of drones are lining up to buy them! The spring pack hanging down under that narrow axle, is a great anchor to snag you up in wheel ruts, but of course if you are putting the rated 1350 kg in it every day, you will need to add a few more leaves to help you to get caught off-road. Lots of grey in the mouse covered interior of course. Does the park brake work in this model? Because it does not in any of the other versions. The automatic transmission - sorry, 5 speed clunk box, er havn't the opposition gone to 6 speeds now?? The switch panel and the radar panel look, sort of added on. I guess they are just that, because they certainly have not redesigned the interior to meld them in. The CD player, WTF? Must have a booming amplifier to drown out the road noise? No? You are correct - if you NEED one of these dinosaurs, then you are between a rock and a hard seat, there simply isn't anything else to compete. Are any other manufacturers listening????????

    A good review. My new 79 series single cab has cutting edge technology in my opinion. Probably because I'm comparing it to the 27 year old cruiser I traded in to buy it. If you need a workhorse, you cant go past a landcruiser. I love mine. If you're after a show pony your money would be better spent elsewhere.

    • @therightcar
      @therightcar  Před rokem

      Beautifully put! Sounds like you use it for its purpose!!

  • @hayden6930
    @hayden6930 Před rokem +4

    I reckon to understand the cruiser, you need to see where they came from. They have taken the most practical and economical steps to avoid making any unnecessary changes since the beginning.
    The rear track width is the perfect example. There is no need to change it, i disagree that it makes it a handful offroad. I drive one, I've added spacers, it makes a barely perceptible difference in only some situations. Everywhere else is not noticeable. So i removed them - not necessary.
    The cruiser is a heavy duty commercial project fleet car. It's built to do a simple job and do it well, it's priced accordingly. It's not meant to compete with any of the Thai/indian/Chinese utes with all their bells, whistles, features and functions at all. I feel like the fact you buy them from the same dealer that will sell you a corolla or hilux does them a disservice. It should be sold with tractors, trucks and other farm implements, from that perspective people would marvel at its luxury in even the toughest conditions. I love them for what they are - a very fast tractor.
    Coming from a 40 series they're the absolute height of luxury. Can go all the same places but with air conditioning and power steering! Sometimes the doors don't even leak, and you dont always have to wear earplugs.
    Terrible choice for commuting in city traffic though, much like any other tractor.

    With over 35 years in the automotive industry
    I’ve seen my fair share of problems with climate control systems, electronic automatic transmission systems.
    And usually there’s a stage when the manufacturer stops making replacement parts for those vehicles.
    For example
    I have a customer and he owns a VN Commodore with climate control and it stopped working 2 years ago and you can’t buy any replacement parts for it, (not even second hand).
    Mercedes Benz (most of the older ones) all have problems with interior controls.
    My 2003 Ford Fairlane that I sold
    Climate Control on the passenger side stopped working,
    My current Ford Territory climate control driver side has a potentiometer problem inside the dashboard and apparently it’s a whole dash out.
    My 1998 Holden TF Rodeo, it’s got basically the same interior controls as a 79 series, it all works perfectly.
    If you plan to keep your vehicle beyond the warranty period then you definitely do not want all that tech

    The same review from another person who doesn't own one, but that's your job, car reviews.
    Always complaining about the lack of 16 cup holders or 58 usb ports., or it drives a bit vague, of course it drives a bit vague.
    Front beam axle vehicles have that feeling, the price you pay for durability, simplicity and off road capability.
    Can't have one without the other, that point should be made
    Though you make some good points about the 70, and make the comparison that if you don't have a need for it, it may not be the right vehicle for you.
    The 70 series doesn't to have compete with anything else in market, it has been built with a particular purpose.
    If you want all the other things, buy a Hilux, Ranger, Triton, Navara, or whatever else on the market, actually that would be a harder list to choose from.
    If you don't like the 70 because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles, and that's what you want, don't buy one....
    People who like them, get it. Those out there who own one, will get it, it's something you can't explain.
    The last vehicle with the "KISS" principle still in mind.
    I think of them as a blank canvas, you add to and change it with an almost endless list of options out there in the aftermarket world, and not having all the "lane assist" stuff, you are free to do that without upsetting any computers.
    These vehicles are sold in countries where they don't care for apple car play, they want, simplicity, vinyl seats, a manual transmission, manual windows, manual mirrors, manual, vents, things that don't stop working, and you can fit yourself or get from a model that is +25 years old, even the wheel bearings haven't changed since 1975.
    The changes are slow, tested and proven when they are released.
    Yes it has many flaws, any vehicle does, but you love them for it, a vehicle on the market that doesn't conform to everybody's want's, and I like Toyota's mindset for keeping the 70 series that way since 1984.

    Worked for a major Toyota Dealership network as a valuer- saw so many Landcruisers, Troopies in mine sites bashed around with a zillion k’s but working away reliably every day usually 24 hours in the mine sites. The mine companies would replace and update them only after years of service. They were replaced but not retired as we on sold them to the agricultural industry as they were highly valued and would live on ‘bashing’ around rural Australia on farms.

    Still shouldn't have to fit wheel spacers to rear axle to match front track, especially at this price, Toyota Japan too cheap to supply upgraded axle /housing, still supplying the traditional 6 cylinder model diff housing.
    An engine remap picks up power in a big way, and the later gearbox overdrive ratio improved as the pre 15 models screamed at 100k.

    I brought a 2022 78 series brand new. It's an 08/22 build so I missed out (if you like) on those safety updates but I'd waited 1.5 years for it by that stage and Toyota had halted production due to demand, so I was happy to just get it. All of the features you mentioned of modern cars are basically for soft cocks who can't drive anyway. I have travelled Australia extensively in the outback and brought a Troop Carrier to continue to do that. When you go out of the city you see nothing else except 70 series, some with millions of Km's on them. They may seem impractical for driving around the city. But there is nothing else in the bush. The "upgrades" aren't seen as upgrades at all as no aftermarket manufacturer makes a bull bar that can incorporate the autonomous braking system yet and the factory gvm upgrade, which I wished I'd gotten is also seen as a set back for some as again there is no yet certified aftermarket system to take the gvm beyond the manufacturers specifications. The sensor in the windshield also makes it impossible to add the external sunvisor which is a popular addition. So while Toyota is trying to get with the times, they simply can't or can't easily because the market for the 70 series is not for a city dweller. Dubai, South Africa and Australia are the biggest markets for the 70 series, why? Because each of those countries have extremely remote and inhospitable arid regions which you need these vehicles for. Autonomous braking isn't needed when transporting supplies for the Red Cross to a remote African village or an Aboriginal community 900kms from the nearest town. So put the 70 series down if you wish. But most criticisms come from people who have never been 3 hours beyond any town.

    I have had one for 10 years. I am to the stage now where I cannot stand the rough unladen ride and the noisy cab. I think most people driving a proper work ute don't want all that electronic crap you just turn off. I don't want blind spot and cross traffic stuff, that's what mirrors are for. We want reliability because your income is at risk if it breaks down. You didn't mention the lack of door armrests you cannot use or the centre bin that is also too low. These are things Toyota should have fixed by now. The aftermarket industry has fixes. I have been waiting for an alternative ute that will do what the cruiser does with regards to heavy towing and load carrying while being more comfortable and still reliable. The ONLY ute that comes close is the Musso. The rest are either unreliable, the manufacturer thinks warranty is optional or they don't have the GVM and GCM figures to be comparable. I have been waiting for the Hyundai/Kia group to bring out a ute but they are very slow. The problem with the cruiser now is that too many posers are buying them that don't need them or won't be using them for their strengths. This is one of the reasons for the current shortage and inflated used prices. These people are a glutton for punishment to want to bounce around in these trucks just because they think they are cool. The reason I replaced my old V8 1996 Disco was that I wanted something far more reliable. I was bricklaying in the desert out of Alice in the early 90's and my boss had two late model Utes (before all the commercial 4wd hype) and they never let us down plus growing up my ol man drove an old 318 Heavy Duty V8 timber truck that was wild to be in as a kid. So yes, I probably swallowed the hype a bit like you said, but I wanted a new car and this is the choice I made.

Likely to use the LC 300's six pot oiler under the bonnet with a single turbo & 165Kw & 600Nm on a 6 Spd manual & possibly even a 6spd Auto tranny the vehicle will be required to meet the likely intro of Euro 6 in aust next Jan . Demand outstripped supply & Reports from Japan have now pretty well confirmed that the V8 oiler is on its way out very soon globally as it is too expensive to comply to Euro6/7. As aust will adopt Euro 6 Emissions regs as of Jan 2024, the V8 oiler can't be sold from then. Japan & other markets will end up with a 2.8 T/ Diesel or a 4.0 6cyl Petrol.
