🚨 My workshop on oils & butters will empower you to make evaluate and choose oils and butters for YOUR hair and your regimen. I teach you not only the science 🧪 of oils and the structure of hair, but also an easy process for predicting how an oil will likely affect your hair. The aim is to move you closer to your ideal regimen with less guesswork and product “junkyism”. Click the link and nab an early bird ticket before they run out🚨
In a video all about clumps, I talked about the merits of clumping but clearly I did a rubbish job at explaining what I meant. With the aim of making amends, this video will show you what a clumping workflow actually looks like. Try it and create your own clumps!
This is the video I made last year - • How to start 2020 with...
This is the one where you can see the nighttime routine (you NEED to do this well to have clumps that last) - • CLUMP MAINTENANCE | TH...
Step 1: twist your clean hair
My favourite twisting technique these days is the loose-rope twist, which gives me the volume of a loose twist combined with some of the longevity of a rope twist.
This is how to do a loose-rope twist
For the purpose of creating clumps and to avoid matting at the roots, I start all my twists with a short plait.
Twirl your hair as you twist but not as much as you would a rope twist.
    Step 2: wear the twists
Just wear them however you wish. The way you approach keeping them moisturised and stretched will affect how readily they’ll be removed to pay attention.
    Optional: cleanse them
You can do a single wash day with clay - note that you do this at your own risk.
    This works well for me.
Step 3: lube up your fingers and remove them
Use an oil of choice. Grape seed & jojoba are personal favourites and adding a few drops of lavender oil can make the whole experience more sensual.
When doing this, don’t just go straight in for the kill. Start at the very ends and gently tease the two tendrils apart from one another, using scissors if you come across any stubborn knots.
Step 4: these are your clumps
Yay! See - not so complicated, right?
Over time, these will become less twist-out like and more loc-like. Embrace that but if you’re serious about length retention, keep your hair in buns or other up-dos with your ends tucked away.
You can wear such styles over a few days, spritzing and moisturising the exposed regions and ends as you see fit.
If you’re spritzing loose hair, especially your ends, remember to stretch it to preclude it from coiling on itself irreparably.
    Step 5: pre-poo
After a week or so in your clumps, use your low molecular weight oil, e.g. babassu, avocado, olive or coconut and a slippery conditioner, FYI the best ones in my opinion, contain behentrimonium & dimethicone, to detangle the clumps, ensuring you retain your sections. I do this by loosely twisting each section upon detangling it.
Step 6: wash, rinse and repeat.
Now you know what clumps are - go out and conquer the world!

Be cautious with 'rope' twists though as too much twirling can weaken the strands and cause breakage, meshing and tangling upon removal.

I have a mix of 4b/c/a and I recently started to pay attention to clumping and was trying to figure out the name and see who had a technique for it and found clumping lol. My hair is fine but dense but it breaks so easily and since I started clumping when I separate, my hair has stayed moisturized with very little breakage!

Your hair is beautiful Naturally High I'm glad you have your own lane with your hair despite all the negativity you received on your hair in 2018. Now ppl are doing your style because of all that over manipulating of the hair with gel can damage a person's hair. I been there I been on the natural journey since 2008 when my hair first fail out from hair glue. My hair has grew to my shoulder and I had many set backs. I have big chopped 4 times. But each time it comes back faster and a different texture and healthier. My new journey is to eat healthier and exercise which I kind of did in 2015 but I fail off. I dyed my hair and took fish oil pills, I was not moisterizing my hair ( I repaeat my hair needs moisture lots of it) and I was using Gel too much and my hair broke off in the back of my head October last year 2020. My hair grew back now in April 2021. But back to you Naturally High I'm glad how humble you are. I'm the same Kids made fun of me back in 2008 because of me going natural fast forward to 2011 natural hair started getting more popular. I'm not saying I'm the first to go natural because in the 60's-70's ppl did it. Also in the 90's-early 2000's we had ppl like Lauryn Hill, Macey Gray, Jill Scott, India Aire, Wanda skyes, Keliz( Milkshake brings all the boys to the yard singer) and many more that was natural. I never forget how they ridiculed me back in 2008 in school I would walk in the class room and they would laugh. But that's okay I just wished I would of went natural sooner. Hey I love it now. Naturally continue to be you.😘❤

Thanks for your comment and the realness. Sorry to hear that this style made you feel more exposed than you would’ve liked. 😆 everyone’s hair is different but for me, I know it will just knot again unless I reclump it with flaxseed gel and that takes time. Unless I have time to really fix the ends I’ll leave them slightly tangled. Most times the tangles are from shed hairs anyway and removing them could endanger rooted hairs.

      Hallo!
Does your scalp need cleansing? If so, you have options. You can use a hydrosol (e.g. ORS Dry Shampoo) to cleanse your scalp - I have 2 videos on this. You can also do water only washes. You can do a wash with a stocking cap. You can do a kaolin clay wash, focusing on your scalp. I also find that rosemary oil is excellent for eliminating itching.

  • @KDbelieves
    @KDbelieves Před 3 lety +2

Your explanation on why you don't like to detangle your ends when there is a loose stand that could potentially become a tangle is also the reason why I don't trim my hair often.
I feel like trimming causes more single strand knots and split ends, which requires more trimming and thus shorter and shorter hair. It can lead you down a never-ending cycle. When you trim your hair, it just exposes the healthy part of your hair to the friction that causes the single strand knots and split end! In a weird way, the single strand knots and split protects the rest of your hair from them. I think trimming should be a last resort. You should only trim/dust when there is a tangle that will undoublty cause more issues if you keep it.
I also think split ends work differently for type 4 girls. On someone with straight hair, it's easy for that split end to keep splitting up the hair shaft because the hair is straight. If you have kinky hair, it's harder for the hair to continue splitting because the hair curls in a way that somewhat blocks the hair from splitting further. As a result, I've noticed that one tail of the split end just breaks off at the point where the hair bends instead of riding up the hair shaft. So to me, split ends are kind of a unnecessary reason to trim. I only trim knots between two strands of hair and hairs with multiple single strand knots. Or when my ends get so bad that they tangle more than usual and start to feel HORRIBLE.
I used to trim 2-4 times a year and it left my hair growth stagnant. As soon as I trim, my hair would go back to feeling the same way within a week. If you require frequent trimming, that should be a sign that you need to look over your hair care routines. Do you moisturize enough? Do you wear your hair in protective styles? Do you wear ruff fabrics? etc. I haven't had a "proper" trim in over 2 years. I only cut off big knots when needed. My hair has grown A LOT and my ends aren't straggly.

    • @HeleneGLmarie
      @HeleneGLmarie Před 2 lety

I agree. I stopped trimming in February because i noticed it gave me more single strand knots within a week !!!!
I just put more effort in hydrating my ends now.
You might also lack protein in your hair (hydrolyzed protein).

    • @ibukunoluwaa.1143
      @ibukunoluwaa.1143 Před 2 lety

Thank you! I decided to stop trimming my hair two years ago for the exact reason you explained, the single strand knot didn't increase at all, if anything I barely notice them, I'll say that's because my routine encourages prevention rather than cure.

Do you leave the braids at the root the entire time or take them out?

How do you prevent your roots locking up?

That was really well phrased! First of all, I detangle my hair from the roots first before I wash it. In addition, I make sure my partings are clear. My roots do not lock up from clumping. Maybe you could try it on a small section of your own hair and see how it goes.

I never tried clumps, but I used to wear my natural hair in twists all the time. I didn't have your patience though and I used to tear my hair to shreds during take down 😬. I just wear locs now 🤭

Have you ever tried to do braids on your hair instead of the twists?

It's beautiful but dang that seems really tedious, the take down of the twists.

"If you do this, you do it at your own risk" >_<
Leaving alone knotty ends where the knot cannot be removed without separating the clump, is that it? that's interesting, thanks

Lol - everyone’s hair is different and I want everyone to know that ultimately, the responsibility lies with them to know their hair the best and act accordingly.
Yes, that’s part of it. It works for lazy days when I’ve nowhere to go. If I want to neaten the ends, I do detangle but then I add flaxseed gel and use that to set them.

  • @carmelitarozendaal6296

How often do you comb youre hair. I do not like combing my hair because it is so thin. I want it to get thicker.
    Love youre videos btw.

Go Ayurvedic if you want thickness eg henna and friends, also do onion juice. I was thin and fine i am now medium fine.

I don't understand why anyone would wonder how to twist the hair. Twist ,twirl twist twirl . I will tell you this though , untwisting is a nightmare. Unless ! You putl oil in before , after and daily.
