  • This video shows you how to troubleshoot your wiring for a trim gauge on a Mercury outboard motor. Found out to be a faulty ground.

    Great tip! I had the same symptoms with my 2003 Mercury 150. The tilt sender unit on that model grounds directly to the shaft and 18 summers of salt spray caused it to fail. Wire brushing and a lot of dielectric grease fixed the problem. Like you, I couldn't find anything on this issue in boating forums or CZcams. I really appreciate you posting this video. Saved me from buying a new sending unit and gauge.

    Thank you, I think this will help - trim gauge isn't working, but the brown/white wire from the sensor is cut or broke off. Then on the opposite side of the motor, I have another wire coming out of the bottom of the motor housing, well it's a brown wire sticking out of tubing/casing with heat shrink covering where the casing stops so I can't see if there are two wires (with one of them brown/white). My sensor is grounded to the shaft so I am assuming someone had an issue (I'm not the original owner) and ended up splicing in this brown wire, leaving the ground wire coming from the motor just cut off. But your video puts me in what I think is the right direction.

    Good evening, how are you? I have a Mercury four stroker 150 hp 2021.. I wanted to know how I can deactivate the first stage of the trim so I can raise it but it... because my boat the side mirror is very inclined so I can't get enough height to gain rpm

    Hey Steve great video! I have a 96 mercury 200hp efi that looks same as your 175hp. My trim doesn’t work and think it’s the sender. Can you please post up a link to the sender you used??

    I have a Mercury Optimax 150HP 2002. The trim gauge doesn't work AND the motor send off an alarm after about 10~20 minutes of use saying Trim error. Cannot find a solution anywhere. Would the trim gauge not working cause this or is it likely the trim sensor?

      Hey Sam. It could possibly be the trim sensor. I would start by checking for a loose ground wire. I had to bypass the ground wire inside my motor cowl and mount a wire on the outside of the motor. You could probably do the same. If it don't appear to be that, you may have to replace the sensor. It's not very expensive and easy to replace. You just have to tweak it to make sure you get it in the right position to make the gauge work correctly. Good luck

    What is the purpose of this gauge?.. I mean honestly is it necessary?.. can u not just turn your head and look to see if it's up or down?

    how do you calibrate it?

    • @lennytunes56
      @lennytunes56  Před 3 lety

      I had to do it manually. I would adjust the unit and check the gauge. It took a little time but finally got it where I wanted it

      @@lennytunes56 do you change placement of the physical unit? my guage works but not reading accurately

      @lennytunes56  Před 3 lety +2

      @@GusgusA1 yes just loosen the screws and move it a little a time then watch the gauge and make adjustments accordingly

      Sorry for the delay response. I'm sure by now you have it fixed. However, if you haven't, I just had to set the sensor where I thought it would be for a starting point. Then, just had to tweak it back and forth until I got it right. Hope you got it working. Thanks for commenting
