  • Hey, everyone! Hope you're having a great day. I thought I would share my thoughts on the Firestone Firehawk tires I decided to put on the Corvette. I love them, and I think they're highly underrated -- or perhaps not even really on most people's radar. If you like affordable, sticky, and rad looking summer tires, you should definitely give them a look. As always, thanks for watching! Ride and drive safe.

    They’re so good because they’re really a very popular Bridgestone tire in the rest of the world. The Potenza RE003. I currently have the Potenza S-04pp (now replaced by the Potenza Sport in the U.S.) on my car, but they wear out too quickly, so I decided to purchase these. Interested to see how they compare to the S-04’s in terms of performance, once I put them on in a few months.

    All the techs I worked with blamed the tire psi in the Wilderness. That's two different dealerships during the long running recall. Explorers would have to hot below 20psi before they looked low, and with 26psi factory you didn't have a lot of wiggle room before the tire was severely under inflated... Which leads to heat and tire failure. Love Firestone tires. Even worked for them a few years before my current gig. They'll be the next set of sneakers on my new ride too.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Před 5 lety +1

      Yeah, I remember the psi being mentioned back in the 90s. Once the story blew up in the media, though, that's all people saw. They're great tires, and I'm really happy with mine. 👍🏻

      @gtpskip Před 4 lety

      That and an inherently unstable chassis set up on the Ford Explorer, the low pressures indicated by ford were to hit their ride comfort goals
      My uncle had an explorer with 93,000 on his wilderness tires when I replaced them, he wanted them again! But he religiously kept them at 35psi

    I like what you’re saying about modifications and tires. Wheels and tires are the place you should start when looking for increased performance. From the ground-up is how you should seek performance. Also an added little fact, the difference between a street car and a race car is the tires. If you put race tires on your Toyota Camry, you’ve just built a race car. That’s all you need to say you have a race car. If you don’t have race tires, you don’t have a race car. Fact!

    My C5Z came with a set of these and they weren't really bad but definitely very grip limited compared to what this cars chassis can actually do. Then again most tires are unless you're putting on super sticky Nt01's or R888's. Not a bad budget tire.. but not something you can really push hard on either. A better alternative I would say is the Nitto Nt05's which have a 200 tread wear and last about 10-15k miles of mixed driving. Don't know about everyone else but tires are the most important piece of the puzzle and I personally like to get the most out of my cars mileage. Spending $20-40 more per tire and having to replace them every few years is worth it in my book.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Před 2 lety +1

      Great point. I think the Firestones are a nice combo between value and daily driving, but the Nittos would likely give you more extreme performance for the money even though you'd have to replace them more often. Thanks for watching!

    I ALWAYS wear out motorcycle tires (especially the rear) faster than car tires. My GT500 ruins a set in about 12,000 miles . . . my motorcycles (liter bikes) need new rubber in the rear after half that mileage, maybe less. Nonetheless, I too am finding the reviews on the Firehawks to be pretty damned good . . . so I think I'll buy a set in the VERY near future for the GT500. Thanks for the review.

    I use these tires on my 2014 Evo X all throughout the year, and I love them!! Even though they are summer sport tires I was pleasantly surprised how well they worked on very cold wet and even snowy surfaces. Lately I've been driving with them and the temperature has been 32f or below and you can physically tell when the tire is cold and when it starts to warm up the ride become smoother and the grip starts to improve. In the summer same thing except they get a lot warmer and stickier to the point where it's still holding on high-speed corners and it scares me to go any quicker because I worry about debris on the road, not the fact that the tire will hold. Treadwear is amazing as well as long as you're rotating them regularly and your alignment is correct for your driving Style. One last note, to make sure you're getting the most performance when driving on wet roads make sure you have them mounted correctly so the tread pattern is wicking away the water like it should because it makes a huge difference I learned that the first time I rotated the tires wrong.. 12,000 miles of daily driving and also a couple of track days and they look like they've barely lost any tread at all!

    How can a major tire manufacturer make such sub-standard tires. I went through 2 sets of Goodyear F1 EMT (stock on my C5), replaced those with Goodyear Eagle F1 D3 tires. I wanted a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar 3 tires to replace the D3’s, but the reviews were so bad… I just couldn’t do it. 4 years ago, I replaced the run-flat Michelin tires with a set of Firestone Fire Hawk Indy 500 on my BMW M5 and was so happy with the performance. My car, show in the avatar, is my DD and its modded, performance and some suspension (large rear bar and chassis bracing) and I need new tires come spring. I have it narrowed down between these and the Goodyesr F1 asymetical. It needs to handle the TOTD and surrounding roads once a year, rest of the time it's to and from work, cars and coffee, etc.

    Hello everyone, I currenty have these tires on my car. They are great for grip and launching however, the other day I did over 2 hours on the highway and the front tire completely ripped off down the side wall. (Tire pressure was normal & I never hit any pot holes) I managed to lose a tire and damage a rim. Thankfully I reacted quick... I then got my spare on and left. I personally think these tires are bad quality for long drives at higher speeds. My average speed on the highway was 110-120km per hour. (Give or take) These tires are rated for much higher speeds so I thought they'd last but appearently not.
    Anyhow, I just thought I would share my experience with everyone. Cheers!!!

    No talk of why they are asymmetrical, yet it’s the same tire for both sides creating a reverse wear direction on the passenger side. There should be a right and left side (directional) tire. I have these and just noticed it.

    • @jax1079
      @jax1079  Před měsícem

      So they can focus on doing one thing right and one thing only. A symmetrical tire (much less one that can be rotated from corner to corner) has to do the job of a front tire, a back tire, and all the various forms of grip that might come with such a job at speed. An asymmetrical tire only has to do the job of the tire at that corner of the car for optimal handling.
