Thanks for all of the amazing content TGV, you're easily my go to resource for anything horology related! I've always had a burgeoning interest in the hobby but never felt like I had the bank balance to participate, you really showed me that you can be an enthusiast without having a Patek in your watch box. Keep up the amazing work!

For an analog “beater” I would have to recommend the Casio MRW-200H at $20 and the Casio MDV106-1A “Duro” at approx $50.

Another superb video TGV! Can't think of anything you've missed... Maybe a good microfiber cloth, scotch brite sponge to restore brushed metal surfaces.... Case presses are fairly inexpensive, and handy for stubborn case backs. I just picked up an ultrasonic cleaner that's handy for metal bracelets. But it all starts with a case knife and a spring bar tool. I wonder what Hugo suggests??? :)

    • @benjaminbarrera214
      @benjaminbarrera214 Před 3 lety

The case presses can be dangerous! Some people use the wrong die, or the watch slips and they wind up cracking the crystal. Sometimes the hands and dial also get crushed and the watch is scrap at that point.
As with any other tool, practice on an old watch you don't mind destroying before you use it on a good watch.

My collection seems almost weird to me, I picked 6 different all-purpose Casio watches I think are good for any situation even as a beater watch. Three of them are G-Shocks--DW5600, GBD-800, G100. Three of them aren't--W-S220C, AQ-160W, MRW-200H. All offer great value for the money and I'd recommend any of those six. I enjoy deciding which one I'm gonna strap on for the day, and seeing what others are enjoying themselves. Great video and channel ✅

As a beginner watch collector, I really appreciate this list. I have a spring bar tool.....and that's it! Will definitely get an expanded tool set. Love the books, found a few Kindle versions but I think the paper is better. The only thing I'd add to the list is an inexpensive watch time graph like a Weishi which I just ordered! Along with Long Island Watches, you guys are absolutely the best, and as a beginner I've been checking them all. Your watch holder is nice so as soon I buy the next one I will need it! Your dive watch design collaboration is a beauty.. Very happy to be part of a great community. I love that you have a Casio digital watch in your collection. A big middle finger to the snobs and a frothing cheers to the disciples of practicality. My first watch purchase about 6 years ago was a Casio A168. It served me for five years until the battery died and I, unwisely, tried to service it myself. The gasket was cactus, but it worked okay for a couple months before dying. It just needs servicing professionally and I'm sure it would work fine again. In September 2020 I bought a cheap "youth" replacement on Amazon, the W-217HM-7B. It has offered typical Casio reliability, but somehow recently I got bitten by the watch collecting bug and have been geeking out ever since. Most of the watches covered are of course mechanical analogue items, so it's nice to see a realist who's happy to show off a classic piece of digital technology.

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze Před 3 lety

I think a time accuracy measuring app is great to know how well your watch is running. I use two to cross reference and get a good average of results. I know some dont care about accuracy.. which personally eludes me as to why not?.. but, for me, there's an extra sense of comfort and enjoyment when I have a record that is proof that the watch is running within a certain level of accuracy which is a bonus for both watch choice and ownership. Yes, I picked this watch because I really like it AND it's also running amazingly well, too! Feels so good.
I tend to want to keep more accurate timepieces on my wrist. Where as when the watch deviates more, I'd use as excuse to switch to another freshly wound and set watch vs resetting the current watch that has deviates. Going for a minimalist collection, I think it makes sense to want to keep and enjoy a watch that is accurate on wrist for longer. Wanting a large collection to constantly cycle through, the mentality is different and I get where accuracy is not as much of a factor or perk of the watch ownership.
And, perhaps a basic $100 timegrapher would be good to occassionally monitor the health of your watch. Certain readings can give u a better idea of how good or bad your watch is running so you may have better indications to take a watch into service or not. And, if you tinker with your watch or comfortable modding it, it is a good tool to make some fine adjustments if you dare. It has certainly helped me dial in a large number of automatic movements to get them into tighter tolerances for accuracy. It's not for everyone and attempt at your own risk.

One small cheap accessory I think we should have is a leather tray, the button in the corners style. You can then unclip it, and it lays flat in your travel bags for trips. It can hold a ring, cuff links and more.

  • @bjornkeizers

Very nice overview; definitely a few solid recommendations here. I've used Polywatch a few times, on things ranging from a Swatch to a Vostok Amphibia, as well as a GameBoy screen even. It's awesome stuff!
I can definitely support the Cape Cod recommendation. I've used it on several watches, including a colleague's Breitling that looked a bit tired. Got it looking brand new with a bit of elbow grease. I would recommend wearing some gloves when working with it - not only because it causes black residue, but the smell is quite strong and you'll end up with vanilla scented hands for a day or two. Probably better for your health.
Where I'm going to disagree is on tools. I'm very much in the 'buy once, cry once' mindset. I have tried some cheaper tools, and generally the expensive stuff just works better. For example, I recently upgraded from cheap Chinese screwdrivers to Bergeons. The Bergeons are very expensive, but they actually fit the screws a lot better. They aren't too thick like the Chinese stuff, nor do they bend or break. Same thing goes for a springbar tool - just buy a Bergeon 6767 and don't even bother with cheap ones.
Now, there are some areas where you can save. For example, movement holders, caseback openers, case cushions, etc. there are solid alternatives like Horotec and even some Chinese stuff that works just as well.

I can certainly agree with watch tools.in last year I've been watching and learning everything I can on servicing certain movements(sellita sw200 and seiko nh35 primarily since those are only two I have to date)so I can do it myself and I can certainly say that quality tools are not cheap by any means.the list of tools that make servicing movements can be endless depending on what you all what to learn to get into but just for the basics you need for servicing you can be upwards of around 2 grand depending on what you buy and the type of oils used in watches are not cheap either for amount you get.dont forget you need a good ultrasonic cleaner with a couple solutions to clean watch movements and you also need a time grapher to check end results and tweak some things if needbe.ive learned to appreciate my watches soo much more since learning how to work on them myself now not to mention for me its so satisfying putting the balance back in and seeing movement start back up once everythings aligned perfectly.working on you own watches is something I highly recommend trying if your a person like myself how is extremely mechanical.
Thanks for recommendations for watch straps especially the nato style straps.seems like the only ones I find are usually the same junky stuff that's usually on ebay or aliexpress type websites.

Good calls TGV, got 2 Timex Marlins (Snoopy Baron, Charlie Brown Kite), had scratches. Rimex replacement crystals not expensive (10$) but you must ship to and from Timex. Tried this Polywatch, perfect restoration in 2 minutes.

Just received my Casio GA-2100-1a1,Triple Black, from eBay, for , I think, a good price ($125 Can) and I love it. I’m a subscriber and think the information you provided for many brands is one reason I got it. It’ll go with my GD-350 and Sieko Arctura Kinetic, 2 tone. I’m still aiming, one day , for my bucket list Grand Sieko.

Hide And Drink tool rolls. Fantastic and sturdy. Have the small one for my watches, and bigger for tools and razors.

Not sure if it's a must, but a watch Winder is helpful. I stopped using mine but when I swapped watches more frequently I always had the other watch on a Winder.

I've got a nice hand bag full of Nato Paratrooper and Barton leather straps myself because I have large wrists.😅
In college I was wearing a quartz timex similar to a Fairfield with an elastic metal bracelet. I had a Jeweler had put an extra long version of that bracelet that was still kind of tight and that kind of turned me off to watches once I replaced it with my cellphone. It wasn't the watches fault. I purchased it in 1997 and it lasted me till 2000-2001
when the strap broke during a feild survey I was doing. I was glad to be rid of it at the time as we all know how uncomfortable a poorly fitted metal bracelet can be.
That worked for a while but I was now working fir an Ag Manufacturer and wanted a nice watch. Using a cell phone was getting old. Necessity drove my to buying straps as I'm 6'6" and I have very large wrisrts. So I google watches for hours in 2003 until I discovered Nato straps was the day I started to fall in love with wearing watches again. My first watch that I bought that I stll have today was a Pulsar PZ4003x. Nothing special but I wanted one and I spent MONTHS trying to track one down.

For best demagnetising results, start with the watch almost touching the demagnetiser and then lift the watch away straight up while keeping the demagnetiser running.

I find that Meguiar's PlastX acrylic headlight and clear plastic polish makes an excellent substitute for polywatch and is significantly more affordable.

Molte grazie per un altro fantastico video!
    (I hope it’s correct)
I really like a good practical accessory and ‘need to have’ video. I just love that Carl Friederik!
Besides that I was just looking to buy a tool kit. I once received a free spring bar tool but seem to have misplaced it.
I’m very glad you mentioned the books (not the first time of course) because I must regrettable agree that blog sites and many CZcams channels lack in in depth knowledge of horology. I would also suggest people to consult their local library, even if it is just to check some out before buying.
I’m not sure you mentioned it but I regularly use a microfiber cloth to clean my watch every other day as well.

    One watch collection: casio a168
    Stylish yet retro
Goes with everything and every occasion
The essence of time keeping with the time, day, date, alarm, and a stop watch. It's simple but that's it's elegance. All for less than a 20.
