Big Water Duck Hunting | Mallards & Divers In Icy Conditions

- Virginia big water duck hunting has been something I've struggled to figure out for years now, so when we got a strong cold snap this past season I was eager to hit some open water in the hopes of targeting some divers. We setup on a big lake point that have a bit of sheltered area from the strong winds that morning. Before long we had some big flocks of mallard, black ducks, and bluebills working our spread. Our shooting let us down a bit but we were still able to put together a late season mixed bag. Hope you enjoy!

Best duck hunting channel on CZcams! I can’t wait until duck season is here!
Thanks Will! You chasing early teal at all or waiting till big ducks?
@@HokeOutdoors I’ll be chasing early teal and dove until duck season rolls around
God I'm so glad other youtube hunters are having their season already! Here in Wisconsin, we don't start early duck and goose until September 1st. So to see these videos coming out already makes me so happy!
This was actually from last season, but I'll be shooting big ducks here in a couple weeks, lord willing! How are things looking over in Wisconsin for this season?
@@HokeOutdoors Hay fields are getting cut at the moment and corn is still standing tall, but hell I've seen so many geese and ducks fly over! Seeing the birds fly makes me feel like a kid again, hopefully the first week of September I can go get some birds down.
Those cold days I always tuck my duck and goose calls in my coat, but leave my whistle out. Can call on whistle for a few seconds until I can pull my main call up out of my coat. Will not freeze. Mallards and divers. Great day!
That's definitely the way to do it! I didn't really have a call pocket on the coat I was wearing on this hunt and regretted it big time
@HokeOutdoors I've never used call pockets. Just tucked inside coat next to chest. Cold days are a good problem to have. Lol.
I love this hunt I just wanted to watch it again
Love the buffleheads!
They’re fun! Typically a lot better tasting on the freshwater too from my experience
Nice work!
Thanks buddy!
I absolutely love your videos. I’m from Nova Scotia, Canada, so I only get to hunt the Atlantic flyway, so I love watching your videos and getting to see what somebody like me gets to experience in other parts of the world. Keep it up
Thanks brother! How are things looking up there for this season?
@@HokeOutdoors Seeing a few geese around for early season on Sept 1st, but won’t be a ton of ducks around until the migration gets going.
Another good one! Can't wait for our season to start!
How much longer you gotta wait?
@HokeOutdoors General duck season here in Nova Scotia doesn't start until October 8th, but it runs until January 15th. Early goose season starts September 1st though... Can't come fast enough!
Great stuff as always!
Thanks Hunter!
Keep them coming bro!
Awesome hunt! I can't wait for season to start here in IL!!
Thanks Josiah! It's getting close now!
Man I’m so glad I found your channel I grew up on waterfowl hunting. I’m from Indiana so we have awhile till I get to be in the blind but at least I have your videos to watch! Keep ‘em coming
Thanks brother! Do you hunt early geese up there at all? Seems like y’all have a pretty strong resident population from what I’ve seen driving through
@@HokeOutdoors yea goose is definitely a huge part of our waterfowl hunting. I just scouted a few rivers and ponds and they seem to be holding slot of geese and teal at the moment. Green heads can be a rare commodity up here. I’m in NE indiana and it doesn’t take much to fill your bag limit on geese but it seems the duck come and go as fast as you can blink. I’ll say the one Dakota hunt we did made me realize how slim our duck populations.
@@HokeOutdoors if you’re ever up in the Fort Wayne area I’d like to get out with you and get you on some geese!
That Christmas eve cold front was something else last year, biggest groups Ive seen in nc and va
It’s was a wild one for sure! Wish I could’ve taken full advantage of it but had just brought home the puppy then so couldn’t hunt everyday
Good video 👍🦆
Great videos as usual.
Thanks Nasser!
It's a good time for duck hunters.
Almost the best season of the year!
Big water we always run 100-200 decoys for the big groups, just a thought for that water out there.
Not enough boat space for that this morning. We were hoping to see a bunch of paired up birds but it was mainly big flocks
You know duck season is coming when you start posting vids!! hahah ... Got a few more weeks here in New Brunswick, Canada
Already starting to see the migration kick off up there yet??
@@HokeOutdoors The migration doesn't usually get going here until about Oct/Nov !!
If it’s me, I’m out on the point with 10 dozen decoys. Big J hook with th tail out into the open water and the ball parallel to shore, where I want to kill them, bout 10-20 yards away. Divers typically don’t like a dead end spread into trees. They like to be able to buzz through the spread with nothing in the way.
Yeah I think we would’ve got a lot more shooting opportunities doing that. I was hoping we could just pull small groups of puddlers into that cove and not have to mess with a big spread given the conditions
Nice video Thomas. I can't wait for the start of this season!
September 1st have cut wheat field lined up for dove (just 2 miles from house!)
Finally have located silos to catch or shoot pigeons!
Permission duck pond still holding good water...miss Delta Dawn is ready.
How is Leroy doing?
Only a couple more short weeks and we'll be chasing them!
Great videos man, just disappointed our season hasn’t quite started yet. Where about you located for the season to be on right now?
Thanks brother! This hunt is actually from last season, the only place shooting birds right now is North Dakota for early goose
Great video but I do have to ask can you start showing some of the piles at the end of the vids?
Thanks Nathan! I'll try to show them when I have pics or videos, just not really into the whole pile picture thing so I don't do it unless my buddies want to
What chokes are you running, you should do an equipment break down video on if these times.
I pretty much keep my Carlsons light modified in now. Should be able to get a gear review filmed here in the next couple weeks
I think Ik this lake I hunted there on the same big freeze this year did pretty well.
What kinda birds did y’all get into out there?
I shoot nothing but 3 1/2 on my Benelli and will never go back to 3 inches … lol
Great hunting bud !!
Thanks brother! The 3 1/2s have never patterned well for me but if they work for you I can’t knock it!
What choke are you using in your Affinity? Looking to try something new in mine this year. Thanks!
Using a Carlsons Light Modified
21days to go for Texas early teal season
Seen any teal down that way yet?
He k yeah east coast mallards
Can’t wait to have a 4 bird limit for them again this season!
Nice hunt. Please tell us where you purchased your black duck magnet.
Better to be lucky than good!
@@HokeOutdoors Agreed.
Is there a early teal session in nc?
Yeah, but only east of 17
What kinda gun you got? Stoger?
Franchi Affinity 3
Tried to hunt that morning but our throttle cable froze on the way to the ramp!
Damn! We’ve had that happen to us before too, never fun
what river ?
Just a local lake
Why don’t you guys make a blind in front of the trees , so your not shooting thru the branches !
I know you hunt all over, if you decide to come to Kentucky hmu
Will do! Hoping I can do more traveling this season
First
what mallard call do you blow ?
