  • The site of three municipal wells, Kitchener's 13 ha. (32 acre) Lakeside Park began as a kettle depression at the end of the last ice age nearly thirteen thousand years ago. Because it receives runoff from the surrounding urban landscape including storm sewers, the 1.5 ha (3.7 acre) pond has experienced some of Ontario's highest levels of eutrophication in recent years. Nevertheless, it remains an urban jewel for the local neighbourhood and visitors, as seen in the early spring greenwood and fauna, featuring Canada geese (Branta canadensis). For a detailed park history, see Robert McCauley’s “Putting the Lake in Lakeside Park” in the Waterloo Historical Society’s annual volume 100 (2012).
