  • Walking among the spring greenwood and wildflowers at Kitchener’s 29 hectare maple-beech Steckle Woods, which John Steckle donated to the City of Kitchener to be preserved as parkland. It has 4 kilometres of forest trails.
Rev. Johann Stoeckle (b. 1802, Biern, German Rhineland), a Swiss Mennonite minister, emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1826, and then homesteaded in Waterloo Township with his wife, Esther Bleam, in 1831. He built a Georgian-style red brick-clad log house in 1833. The chosen site was near a reliable water source that had been used by indigenous inhabitants. Johann's grandson, John Steckle II, managed the hardwood woodlot since 1910. In 1967, he donated a portion of it to the city of Kitchener for a conservation area known as Steckle Woods. Four Steckle generations farmed their land until 1972.

Thank you for your kind comment and subscribing. I usually post a slide show weekly, often from the Grand River watershed, so there'll likely be some that catch your interest. Happy trails to you
