- Gabriel Medina vs. Italo Ferreira face off at the Final of the Rip Curl Newcastle Cup presented by Corona.
The last time Italo Ferreira and Gabriel Medina met in a Championship Tour final, there was a World Championship and a Pipe Masters trophy on the line. Ferreira took the win on both counts, and today at Merewether beach he got another one over Medina, who had been in excellent form throughout the entire event.
Italo linked a series of carving back-hand turns and waited patiently on a barely-breaking wave in case it presented an opportunity on the inside bank. It did, and he added an air reverse for a 7.17 which put him into the lead. His signature move, a big backside full-rotation air, also banked him a 7.77 for a lead he held throughout most of the heat.
Medina locked in a 8.60 for three tight, big backside turns, one of them almost vertical, immediately after he'd ridden out of the previous hit, but it wasn't enough to move past the energy of Italo.
"This guy's a machine, he pushes me a lot. It's going to be a good run, for sure, we have three more events in Australia," Ferreira said in his post-heat interview of the rivalry between the two Brazilians.
This final also put the two men on Brazil's Olympic surf team up against one another, and while only one of them could win here today, it's a shot across the bows for the other teams going for gold in Toyko.

Man. When you think about the percentage of things Italo pulls off it’s absolutely nuts. 2019 corona bali contest I think has to be one of the best contest surfing performance ever. But I love gab too. Also I love bourez, wade carmichael and griffin. It’s just awesome to watch surfing right now with how good the guys are
Italo land at least 90% of his airs , impressive . Will be hard to anyone beat him in small conditions .

Galera fala que ele ganhou só com os aéreos, foda que ngm além dele faz isso com tanta maestria. O foda do Italo é q ele faz isso parecer fácil, igual o Ronaldinho gaúcho no futebol, atraindo críticas que desprezam tal feito, foda q ngm se toca do grau fudido de dificuldade que essas manobras tem, muito mais que essas rasgadas, q todo santo surfista nesse evento tinha no repertório. Resumindo, fez com maestria o que ngm fez direito no campeonato e levou o troféu 🏆
Isso é verdade quando alguém consegue fazer algo tao difícil pra ele parecer fácil acaba erroneamente perdendo um pouco o valor.

Disse tudo, o cara é a sensação do momento, resumindo, surfa muito, porém, ambos tem surf de ponta
Aéreo do Gabriel é melhor. Muito mais bonito e clean. Basta ver o que ele fez na semi. Nessa aí, só faltou a segunda onda. O Ítalo vive sim de aéreo, na borda não está entre os melhores.

Porra cara, vcs parecem que nem entendem do que estão falando, todos os dias do evento os juízes definiram as manobras inovadoras como as mais altas a serem pontuadas, todos os competidores sabiam, se eu domino totalmente a manobra jugam como mais potenciais de nota, pq eu não faria?não tem essa de variação de manobra, estratégia de cada um, ítalo é foda e ponto.

Como sempre Medina tendo nota achatada, melhor onda era pra ter sido 9 ou 8 alto, segunda onda nem 5 foi sendo que ví onda muito pior sendo 6 pontos no mínimo, Ítalo surfa demais, lógico sem desmerecer, passou todas bateria só com aéreo, sem variedade de manobras, juízes tem uma grande raiva do Gabriel a onda de 9.7 é o exemplo, melhor onda disparada do evento e só um juiz deu 10, muita sacanagem!

Só acho que o inicio da bateria os comentaristas eram todos a favor do Medina, dizendo que tinha uma prancha mágica, qualquer onda que italo pegava era so boa mas a do Medina era melhor " se não tivesse caido" poww o cara caiu, e ainda querem comparar com a nota que Ítalo mais pontuou! respeitem o campeão, medina que lute pq italo vai ser o homem a ser batido esse ano outra vez.

This is what it's come to... ride down the line til a "ramp" peaks up, hop in the air and do a twist, land and thump your chest, get an 8 or 9 for a one trick ride! TOO MUCH REWARD FOR ONE TRICK after riding most of the wave IN A STRAIGHT LINE.
Reel back the scores unless done as "a combination of major maneuvers".

That's the problem with comp surfing, very few people are encouraged to ride different boards... It's always the same shit, I'd love to see someone absolutely style it up on a twin keel here, sadly they probably wouldn't get as rewarded as they would if they just did an air :/

I hope the air thing isn't wear comp surfing is going to continue to head... I'd much rather watch surfers like Harrison Roach, Ryan Burch, Dane Reynolds and Bryce Young surf with style and power on different boards than just the same old air crap.
