The second stop on the mega-Australian Leg is Narrabeen. This beachbreak is home to one of the proudest and most hardcore surf scenes on the continent and was the site of the World Junior Championships for a decade. But while many of the faces on tour have competed here early in their career, with mere days between contests, it will be a challenge to regroup after Newcastle and refocus on Narrabeen.

@@Leandrostan__ Toledo got two way more solid barrels and finish with an air at J Bay and still didn't got a 10 . Agree was a great ride but far from solid , anyway we'll never know what goes on in the judges booth . Think we have the right to see what is going on whenever scoring a wave. Do they talk with each order , does the head judge can have the final word? All sports are on the open , surf is the only one I know they don't . 't'okyo will be different since WSL has no word or power , we all will see the difference and after who knows .
@@markriobr yea that’s very true. Nah but judges judge a heat based on the day’s conditions.. if the requirement was a 10 ft barrel everyone would get 1s . For the conditions of the day that was the only wave I saw could have been a 10 as a few 9s were seen that were single manoeuvres.. if combined with the best barrel of the day.. very likely that would be the best possible ride out there that day. I do agree that judging is becoming a little bit more and more suspicious every day. Hope it stays fair

I know that air was sick, but what are they scoring? I thought getting above the lip was important. In many ways it was similar to a float re-entry--just with extra spinnyness.
Exactly. A flat spin on a closeout gets the best score of the heat when the other guy took-off under the lip directly onto the barrel (which a decent share of tour surfers wouldn’t probably have surfed out of tbh) plus 2-3 decent turns on a much better wave. Judging is all over the place, the subjectivity of it has been a problem since the beginning but they are not doing anything to address it, quite the contrary.
I think in this case he gets the score because of the technicality of the manoeuvre and the power of the section it is done on. If he would go over the lip there it would maybe even been a higher score. But I am quite sure if morgz won, the crybabies would have said Gabriel got robbed and the judging is rigged too haha
@@msalvs it was sad to see one of the best barrels of the year get such a low score. I can deal with the result of the heat, but I would like to see exquisite examples of fundamental surfing, like morgz barrel, be rewarded. Ultimatelty, It shows the bias towards airs is back and the viewing experience has been worsened for it IMO--just look how many waves were surfed with the intention to do only one maneuver. I saw someone else phrase what the judging criteria should promote: the waves you would rather watch on repeat. Fuck that barrel was sick.

So now you’ll say that the barrel deserved a better score. Alright so let’s score a 9.67 to that STUPENDOUS PIPELINE BARREL (irony), so then Medina would need only a 7.0 to win that heat. Repeat again: “SEVEN POINT ZERO ONLY” alright?
So, for those claiming that the sick aereo at the last seconds of the heat didn’t deserve at least a 7.0 you should start watching more competition surf to understand what’s going on there, specially with the psychological side of the athletes.

Even if he would get a 10 for that Amazing “Pipeline barrel “ (irony), he still would loose that heat.
The kid was more worried about holding priority and didn’t do anything but sat on his board and watching Gaby’s Air show. That’s not how you win a heat.

Agree, they need to stop scoring this air game rubbish. Scores need to be ON WAVE. This is not kite boarding. It's surfing waves. This scrappy wave choice punt rubbish needs to be downgraded in favour of proper rail game surfing.

The only thing Italo was robbed of was his dignity, when he stomped on his board after he’d lost the heat.
@@nottherealChickenJoe Italo stumbled at first and you can throw out his "incompletes" but his surfing after that was so far beyond what Coffin was doing. That floater and snap, holy shit. Coffin is a great surfer but compared to Italo's dynamism, he was predictable and boring.
