    Next to Elizabeth Bennet, my favorite literary heroine is none other than May Welland. She outmanoeuvred them all! And did it with such style and grace. Love her! She saved Newland from himself. He would have soon regretted running off with Countess Olenska (the temporary excitement and passion would have waned). In his heart of hearts he wanted the safety that a life with May provided.

    • @missydiamond9310
      @missydiamond9310 Před 6 lety +5

      Saying May is evil is giving her wayyyy too much credit. She was a silly child who never knew hardships bc of her upbringing. Born into privilege. We will never know if what you're saying is true because he never pursued the path of countess olenska. Sometimes when the fire burns brightly between lovers it extinguishes the flame, and that very well could have happen if Newland left May for Ellen. However, the whole movie is about what if. And no matter how stable his life with May turned out to be, the what if will always haunt him.

    Actually for me CAPE FEAR is one of the weekest film of scorsese along side BRINGING OUT THE DEAD and COLOR OF MONEY.....the rest of his carrer is impressive and legendary!
    I would compare THE SHINING with SHUTTER ISLAND...both are very smart psychological thrillers!
    SHUTTER ISLAND, THE AGE OF INNOCENCE, GOODFELLAS, GANGS OF NEW YORK, TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL, THE AVIATOR, CASINO, THE LAST THEMPTATION OF CRHIST, THE DEPARTED, HUGO, AFTER HOURS,etc!
    For me Scorsese is THE BEST, after Kubrick.

    Well, Ellen is meant to be in her late 20's--but appear older due to her earlier life experiences. Michelle was 34 or 35 at filming, and she looks it, so it's not complete off. Uma or Gwyneth would've been much too young at the time (23 and 21, respectively).

      @@abhilashapati4677- He stayed loyal to her in the end, though. Ellen had a much rougher deal. You get a sense that the mores of the society were screwed up, not that any of the characters behaved atrociously in any way. Given the circumstances, they were trapped in ridiculous conventions.

      He meant emotionally, soul crushingly violent. Most of the guys in Goodfellas and Casino are psychopaths. They feel rage, lust etc... but this movie is all about knowing a man is in love with his wife's cousin FOREVER and he can never even see her again. It's supposed to be soul crushing, heart rending, awful. It's a "what if Mr Darcy couldn't marry Elizabeth Bennett but married her cousin" type of emotion.
