    Hi Marlene…. I’ve been using the Leica 12-60 for quite a while and agree it’s an awesome lens. The results are up there with my Leica 8-18mm with the added bonus of that extra reach. I regularly float my iso when zooming with both lenses and I’ve not had too many problems….

    Great video Marlene. I have the same lens and it rarely comes off my G9. I use it in manual mode with auto ISO. I am envious of your 100-300 however. Would love to invest in good fast glass but usually they are very spendy. It is great to see options in Photoshop and Luminar to create bokeh and blur effects without too much effort. As a side note, gotta say, I always love your crisp, well designed attire. I'd love to have that gray and orange striped shirt.

    • @ImageMaven
      @ImageMaven  Před 2 lety +2

      Great to hear from you again, Steven. Loyal G9-er in the house! Yes, those super tele lenses are spendy. But this 12-60 is noticeably sharper than my 100-300. You don't realize how un-sharp a lens is until you get a super sharp one. I think I might rent a 100-400 or a 50-200 when my shoulder heals up. (Ahem, thank you skateboarding.) Just to see if that pricey glass is as sharp as they say. I don't think I'll invest though, just because I don't really enjoy hauling around heavy camera gear. And I'm a casual birder..... so far at least.
      So, my mom bought me that shirt recently. Nice cozy flannel. It's that time of year again. It's a Helly Hansen. I'll tell her it's a hit. 😀 It looked too bumpy and weird with the mic hidden under it though, so I clipped it on the outside. It's a bit of a distraction, but I'm sure liking the audio quality compared to my old setups. Cheers!

    Great lens, probably the best zoom lens I've ever used. As for the variable aperture thing you mentioned, I find just sticking the lens to F4 and working around that makes life much simpler :)
    Oh, and the cheaper F3.5-5.6 is also very nearly as good optically. Having used both I've found it hard to tell the difference between photos when compared side by side. Tho I should note that the cheaper lens was with the G80 and the Leica on the G9 but the pixel count difference made little difference to me.

    Great video! Love your channel.
    I had a lens with a slipping rubber ring and took it into a camera repair shop and the repair person who was a retired Pentax tech put a few bits of double sided tape under the rubber. Worked like a charm. Subsequently, I bought a second hand 135 mm prime lens that had lost its rubber ring. I ordered on of the similar width from Ebay and even though it was too loose, I cut it and used double sided tape to adhere it and it also works just fine.

    • @ImageMaven

    I picked up a used LEICA DG 12-60/F2.8-4.0 off ebay for a good price and I love it. It's a great 'default' workhorse of a lens. The only negative is the variable manual focus ring which responds differently according to how fast or slowly you change the focus. It's just not intuitive.

    Hi there and thanks for the nice video! I hope you had a great trip. I use my G9 with that lens (12-60 f2.8-3.5) for online training. Since I am a fixed distance from the camera I'm lucky and can just leave it at 2.8 so that I can leave the iso lower. But I've heard some folks just pretend it is a fixed F4 so that they have a consistent aperature when they zoom. Under controlled lights, seems like that might be a decent work-around for consistent depth of field while zooming.

    Thanks, as always, Marlene; I too use the 12-60mm as my 'go to' lens. I would be interested in seeing how you use a remote set up, to 'shoot' those pesky quick moving birds (who actually make our world a better place). I'd like Panasonic to manufacture an "A" setting on this lens, as in the f1.7mm, to make the aperture settings more managable. Overall, though, I like the 12-60mm as it is a good all rounder. Keep on breathing.

      Hi Mike, I love hearing from you loyal G9-ers in this community. Yes, I'm working on that remote video this week. But a new firmware update for the G9 also happened recently so I might sneak that one in first. November is a busy time in my production schedule.
      Yes, I agree, a dedicated Aperture ring would be nice on this 12-60. It would be nice on all lenses actually. Like the good ole days. But in any case this lens will be sitting on my camera most of the time too.
      Still breathing well here. I hope the same for you! I hear that things have opened up more for the folks in Oz. We are open with restrictions, but I can cope with masks and vaccine passports in trade for being alive. Cheers!

    I recently bought Sony full frame A7IV and sold the LUMIX G95. Going through all my landscape photos, I discovered the LUMIX G95 and G100 were so much more satisfying than full frame. The deeper depth of field on micro 4/3 looks more rich. Then I watched my videos between the two systems. Lumix G95 is so steady and Sony is so shaky. I’m going back to micro 4/3. There is also an indescribable charm to the images.

    Had that lens as a kit with my G9. Used it exclusively during my first year with the G9.
    As you pointed out it is not that fast and since I mostly shoot during blue hours I tend to use faster lenses now.
    The 12-60 is sharp, has a short minimal focus distance and I love the close ups I can get with it.

    I'm a year late to the party, sorry.
    Among my ever growing pile of MFT lenses, I have the 12-35, 35-100 and 100-400. For me, I have discovered that, the 35-100 sits mostly unloved in my camera box. I'm either at the wide end 12-35 or at the other extreme end shooting at the 100-400.
    A few years ago I bought my first Prime lens, a Leica Summilux 12mm f1.4, and immediately fell in love with Prime lenses because of how crazy sharp they are. For me, this an excellent lens for filming and unless I have a specific reason to zoom in to get close to the action or enhance the compression gained from a zoom lens, I mostly film at 12mm.
    The lens is built like a tank and weighs about the same, however if you shoot or film around 12mm then this could be a good addition to your kit. Its also a cracking lens for Astro landscapes.

    I use a G9 and PL 42.5 so far. At some point will also get a wider lens.

      I usually shoot video in M mode. I set Shutter to be 1/125 or 1/250s. In my opinion shutter speed is the most important setting to be aware of in video. I don't use Auto ISO in video. Not sure what you mean by being "concerned about auto ISO". Bear in mind I only shoot video for my CZcamss and usually in the studio. I don't shoot pro video, or do client video work, so I suggest for that kind of instruction you follow some pro videographers. Still photos are another thing altogether, and that's where my skill set is. Thanks for stopping by!

    Hi Marlene,
    I own this lens and I used to own the consumer version as well. IMHO the Leica one is just much more superb in terms of finish, quality of optics and the aperture, of course. Just like you, I don't like the fact that f2.8 only comes at 18mm. The moment you zoom in even a little bit, your aperture changes to f3.2 and up. But at this size of a lens this is okay, I have to say. Compared to other lenses with a constant aperture along the full zoom range this is a considerably small lens! And it's weather sealed and the image stabilisation works very well. I like it a lot, but! ... I seem to have some slight problems with the focusing and getting the sharpest image out of it with my Lumix GX8. I am sure with the G9 it works very well. Sometimes you need to get the right combination of body/lens to work best. Just my opinion.

      Hi Barnabas, I appreciate your opinion for sure! And I agree the Leica version of this lens is excellent. It was sold as a kit with the G9 in some cases, so it's definitely well-matched. It's new to me though. I had the GX8 for a few years before the G9 and I really liked it for the new features with 4K etc. that were new when it came out. I used it mostly with the 7-14 mm f/4, for skateboarding photos. As I mostly shoot outdoors, it worked out great for me. Thanks for stopping by to let us know about the consumer version of the 12-60mm. I've been thinking about getting the GX9 and it comes with that lens. Not sure yet if I need another camera. Cheers!

    • @bhamerlik
      @bhamerlik Před 2 lety

      @@ImageMaven Well, I like the GX8 for its light weight and yet pretty packed up features. For landscape photos during hikes it's a great match with the Olympus 17mm lens which gives me great results. Also, I don't need super fast focusing, so I can take my time. I held the G9 in my hands when I was buying the Leica 12-60 and oh was it a feeling! And the viewfinder is just absolutely fabulous! But I was also thinking: do I need another camera? Will I be able to use it often enough? So I resisted the temptation, because I am just a hobby photographer and probably would not exploit the full potential. But who knows... :-)

      @@ImageMaven The new AI noise reduction technologies, like DxO's amazing Deep Prime, have basically solved most m43 low light/high ISO noise issues for stills, but it's still a concern in video. You might try shooting a series of short videos in low light conditions at ISO 12800, 6400, 3200 etc. until you find the highest ISO noise level you can tolerate, and set that as the upper limit for Auto ISO in video mode. BTW, I 💗 Auto ISO!

I must try the DxO app. I've heard a lot about it and I definitely need some help in that area with my still photos.
      I don't shoot much low light video as I basically only shoot video when I'm making CZcams tutorials. And for me, because video shutter speed is so much lower than when hand holding a super long lens, it's not really a problem. It's not the fastest lens. f/4.0 at 60mm so that might require OIS in low light cases. If you don't require OIS, you can turn it off. Totally up to you! But not recommended when using a tripod.

      Sounds like you have your bases covered. I’m patiently waiting for the Leica 9mm f1.7 to be available in Canada. I have the 7-14mm f4 and it’s just not fast enough for indoor action, like skateboarding. I’ve looked at the 10-25mm f1.7 but it’s huge and very expensive. So I think this 12-60mm is a good all-rounder, with a couple nice affordable primes.
