Update: The woman who’s credit card was stolen chose not to press charges on her because she felt the online shaming was enough of a punishment. She was fired from her job at Starbucks, though.

Not really. There is a federal law that protects them from unauthorized purchases. Credit card contracts with retailers require them to allow the credit card company to take the money back from the retailer. That makes both the retailer and the credit card company put procedures in place to protect themselves from theft such as security software and other steps that a corporation can afford but an individual cannot. Debit cards have no such protection. So when someone gets your debit card you have to do your own investigation without any help from your bank. A thief can quickly empty your bank account and the bank is not responsible for your loss nor are they obligated to help you find the thief.
This wasn't the case only. She skimmed her CC info out of the skimming device that actually reads the card information embossed on the chip. That skimming device then gets plugged with a computer and information is extracted through a program. Info like CC number, expiration, CVV can be obtain so easily.
If I ever get arrested I’m using the “I play soccer” defense!!

This customer who confronted the ex-Starbucks employee has to carry this burden of betrayal for the rest of her life. Her relationships with others will never be the same because of this.
The only thing that the employee was sorry for was that she got caught.
you’re making way too big a deal about this, getting information stolen and confronting the person isn’t some kind of trauma to echo through all her relationships. you don’t experience any deep bond of trust with the person working the register at starbucks.
The real burden of betrayal is on the employee who may never run transactions again.
