  • Heated Steering wheel retrofit DIY on BMW E90 M3. Some add-on electric devices are turned on when the car key is switched to “ignition,” e.g. the dashboard camera and the heated steering wheel designed by BMW. There are fuse slots that have power only when the car is switched to ignition, and BMW sorted them as terminal 15. There is only one such fuse slot on Carl’s car and it’s already occupied by the dashboard camera. We are going to extend terminal 15 with electrical relays for the heated steering wheel retrofit.

    Have you protected the circuit that is feeding the heated steering with one fuse and another fuse for the circuit that is feeding/supplying the dashboard camera? Of course I mean the circuit via the contacts. Any short-circuit via contacts (unprotected) can be a fire hazard because the electrical stress createsd by the short-circuit can melt the cable insolation due to the heat, and from here fire..

      Hello SD, yes I have used independent fuses for all the added-on devices, e.g. fuse F22 for the dashcam, fuse F24 for the heated steering wheel. The power source comes from a fuse and is controlled by the electrical relays I used in the video. Thank for the reminder!
      I do agree I should have made the extension of terminal 15 more simple to avoid unexpected short circuits...

      Hello Ben first of all I strongly recommend you to read the fault codes with diagnostic tool such as OBD2 scanner. The fault codes are super helpful in troubleshooting.
      I guess you can start the car and keep it running without other problems. if so, I think there’s nothing wrong with terminal 15.
      I feel like the ignition/terminal 15 is turned off by other modules. For example, the power management system will regulate the availability of electricity when it thinks the battery is low. If you had replaced a new battery. Please register the battery to tell the car about full battery so previous problems won’t be stored in the memory and thus hindering normal operations.
      But like I said, the fault codes are going to tell us about the car in great detail. Let’s find it out!

      @@funcarsgoodpeople hi ,I read the fault codes but not with ista.With Some basic obd2 scanner.But no faults on that.
      The problem is ,I put the key in and then i press the start button for ignition to go on ,so normally all the lights on dashboard go on ,but sometimes it Goes on but immediately it falls back out ! Then i have to press again and it stays on.Not a big deal but Imagine one day it Will not go on anymore !
      So I was thinking that maybe there is a relay that is not always working…you say the relay or terminal 15 relay is integrated in the fusebox ..so then if you want to change that ,you need to change the whole fusebox ?

    • @benkr5870
      @benkr5870 Před 12 dny +1

      And if you change the fusebox …can you take one from the gravejard ? From the same engine and type car ,and put your fuses in that fusebox or do you need one from the dealer with your vin number ?

      @@funcarsgoodpeople is it only that what can turn the ignition /terminal 15 off ? Can you give another examples what can turn the ignition/terminal 15 off ?
