Agreed. First time I saw him (2012ish) his voice was a whisper on many songs, but he sang this so clearly and it’s so beautiful, tears just washed down my face.

If you get the right one. My sister attended a concert where he complained about not getting enough applause. I also attended which was overall good but hecdid complain about how he wanted to be at a party he had been invited to.

Still playing, but his voice is shot. I've seen both him and James Taylor in concert and while Lightfoot has lost his vocal power, Taylor just gets better.

There's something about this man's voice, the beautiful guitar work, and the strings that you mentioned that really trigger the emotions. So nice to see you react emotionally, I do every time I hear it. There's a lot of poetry in his lyrics too.
I completely agree with everything you just said, particularly about his lyrics. He wrote lyrics that really tugged at the heart. Also, this song is an example of when a string arrangement actually (at least in my opinion) add to the emotions the song is trying to convey. I've often found that certain songs by popular artists end up having a string arrangement that I've thought were completely unnecessary, and that therefore took away from the listening experience. This particular song, however, is an example of strings being completely essential to the track.

The pain you felt while hearing this song is the beautiful suffering of an artist. For me, it’s the ending of my first marriage. And, it also describes the agony of 2020. There’s a truth that we’re all afraid to face, this afternoon, and it is this: 2021 will be worse. More, much more, death is waiting . It will get much worse before it begins to get better. I don’t know how we’re going to bear it. But, God’s love is our greatest hope. May He bless you and give us all the strength that we’re going to need.

Death happens daily non stop. Less than 2% of the population of the world has or has had Covid 19. Don't accept what the media spews to paint everything as doom and gloom is anywhere near the truth. Death is not waiting any more than it does daily.

Try "Beautiful", "Song for a Winter Night", "Did She Mention My Name?", "Don Quixote", and as mentioned, "Canadian Railroad Trilogy".
"Early Morning Rain" and "Carefree Highway" are two songs of his you'll catch yourself humming long after hearing them; they linger like a rich flavor in your mind. GL has a knack of hitting that.

Always loved this song - as a kid I remember how the phrases "castle dark" and "fortress strong" could send a shiver up my spine where "dark castle" or "strong fortress" would not. Poetry v prose. As I got older, I better understood the part about the paperback novels - I read my share of "Harlequin romances" - and to me the song became more of a cautionary tale - beware of casting your partner in the role of the romantic hero; if you do, you'll miss who they really are - they'll become a ghost you can't see.

Hearing this song when it was in the charts, it was probably the first song to ever really move me. It still brings tears to my eyes all these decades later. 'Carefree Highway' is another good song of his.

I've liked Gordon since I was very young, but yet I still feel like I enjoy his music more and more as each year goes by. He only had a handful of really big hits, but his catalogue is as deep as any you'll find and, yes, Canadian Railroad Trilogy is a must!
I believe this song introduced most of us to Gordon Lightfoot. It's Too Late by Carole King is a bit more up-beat (just a bit) but the feeling is about the same. A sad but honest break-up song.
Definitely one of my favorite songs ever. I mean holy crap, that guy's voice! His daughter requested that he change the lyric "feelings that you lack" so that the relationship issues didn't sound one-sided. So in his live performances he sings "feelings that we lack."

I was around 11 when this came out so I’ve heard it many times but it’s only been in the last ten or so years that I’ve come to appreciate what a beautiful song it is and it’s one of my favourites now.

@@Young_Jim Oh yes, absolutely! Didn't quite get it when I was younger. I like it, but didn't get it. Now that I'm older (50s) yeah, it's much more powerful lyrically for me now. Kind of like Johnny Cash singing 'Hurt'. Same song, but seems to come from a different perspective than Trent's version.

Our last concert in March was his. It was his first concert on his to be resumed tour. He still has at least 98% of his voice! Funny someone brought up Fogelberg next. Dan and Gordon were good friends. In fact, Gordon’s ranch in Canada saw MANY greats there. TOGETHER!! Huge parties with WONDERFUL song collaborations!! Lennon, Dylan, Joni Mitchell, so many greats!! Glad you got to hear this song!! It’s quite sad, but quite lovely at the same time!!

You listened to one of the most perfect songs and arrangements ever written. Gord was greatly admired by songwriters from Dylan to Buffett. The second guitar fills are just sublime. The strings never intrude, but enhance the experience. Many claim he never wrote a bad song.

Gordon Lighfoot has a way of weaving words together to entice an emotional response. You need to check out his songs Sundown, Carefree Highway or Rainy Day People... eventually there's a lot of songs to check out.

Daniel, as you heard this song, I could see the pain on your face. From verse to verse and then the chorus with chains on his feet, the feelings lost and just can't get it back. That loss brought tears to my eyes. You have that same reaction to this. So glad that you had the opportunity to hear song. It was one of Gordon's famous songs.

I grew up listening to this track, Sundown and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald but I wasn't exposed to more of his music because mainstream radio only played these. I have enjoyed discovering more of his catalog via Pandora as well as CZcams. I have gone back to review catalogs of artists like Van Morrison as well. Even though I have listened to these artists for 40 years and I thought I knew what they had to offer, I am discovering how much I haven't heard. I have always been a huge Elvis fan and thought I had heard all of his songs, I have discovered differently. He performed over 700 hundred songs and though I watched every movie and had several albums, that didn't even scratch the surface.
I have enjoyed watching people from every age group react to the songs I have spent a lifetime loving. Music is the common denominator that has the ability to bring all ages together regardless of race, gender or ethnicity. So thanks for keeping the music alive. I have always tried to teach my kids but I loved blowing my 15 year old sons mind by introducing him to The Animals, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and essentially gave him an evolution of music in 30 songs. I started with Robert Johnson and moved on from there.

So happy you have discovered and appreciate Gord. (Lightfoot used to play an annual 7 to 10 day residency every November at Toronto's Massey Hall, famed for its acoustics. It would sell out in hours. The combination of his guitar playing and his golden voice could make the most hardened heart break. There were few dry eyes after one of his shows. Lots of tears of joy too, though.) Canadian here and a fan of Lightfoot since the 1960s. This was one of his softer, more radio-friendly US hits. You ought to try his Canadian Railroad Trilogy next. He wrote it in less than a week on commission from the CBC (Canada's public broadcaster) for Canada's centennial in 1967. Other good ones include Sit Down Young Stranger, Song For a Winter's Night, and Early Morning Rain.
One of my all time favorites. The lyrics are so amazing you can almost miss the gorgeous music.
IT was 1970 and as a ten year old kid I repeatedly listened to Gordon Lightfoot. Grest storyteller and artist. His music was his art. You could follow what he was singing and describing at the same time. 61 years old and still bask in the warmth of his voice.

Gordon was and is underrated
At one point in time, Gordon's daughter asked him to change the line "The feelings that you lack" to "The feelings that WE lack", because both he and his wife shared responsibility for their divorce. From then on in concerts, Lightfoot sang "we lack". Kudos to his daughter. RIP Gordon Lightfoot, writer of so many amazing songs.
In the golden era of the singer-songwriter ('60s and '70s) Gordon Lightfoot was one of the very best. He's one of Canada's national treasures, along with Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Judy Collins and a number of others. The albums he recorded in the early '70s are his best material, IMO.
It's really not sad, it's beautiful, like life itself...It's a commentary on love unfulfilled. You'll have many of those, if you're lucky; young man... I've spent nearly a half century with Gordon's music as well as all the others like him..Jim Croce, Neil Diamond, and so many others...
I'm sorry for your profound losses. I heard him sing this my first-year university at a concert in 1971. It reflected my deep depression. I quit uni the next fall. It brings back the memory and pain of an undiluted solution of a heart drowning in heartache. It's just as beautiful as it is pain-filled. Such is life: beauty and pain. Walk on.

My 3rd favorite song of all time! Because it is actually very autobiographical about his relationship problems at the time, his daughter suggested that he change one line of the song from 'the feelings that YOU lack' to 'the feelings WE lack' --- which he now sings instead.

Gordon Lightfoot. Canadian icon. Back when this was a new song, I was a young kid, but it affected me enough that I remember drawing quite an elaborate picture of the ghost chained up in the castle...I ended up taking up singing as a hobby, and as it happens I sound rather like Lightfoot and can imitate him. Have sung this many times at karaoke...and when I do I usually still remember drawing that picture as a kid.
I have heard this song ++ many times. I have seen him many times sing this in his annual visits to Massey Hall, in Toronto. This song has always touched me, but I think that for today, your reaction touched me even more. I got the feeling that it was an emotional gut punch that captured something that might have been going on in your life. I really don't know what your emotional response was, but your reaction was honest and true.

Gordon has a couple hundred memorable songs. One of the greatest tunesmiths of our time. Every one of his albums has a few classics on it. SHADOWS from around 1980 is a brilliant album. And Gordon is one of those rare writers whose lyrics are as good as his music. Nick De Caro did the string arrangements -- brilliant as always. And as I'm sure many have noted, Whitney Houston's hit "The Greatest Love of All" ripped this one off. How anyone let that slip by I don't know given the fame of Gordon's song.
Edmund Fitzgerald was the Gordon Lightfoot song you reviewed, and proof of a serendipity fate moment, as that was the song that I very first watched your channel a few weeks ago, a random utube search for one of my fave songs, and having just learned what you & others are sharing, reactions to old classic songs heard for the 1st time, clicked on your channel. Enchanted, delighted, subscribed (one of only 3 I subscribe to), you had me at "wow!" ...LOL! That said, Thank you Daniel, you are teaching about so much more than just music/lyrics...your insight, instinct for searching for deeper meanings, along with your very obvious love of learning, exploring the world of music, is priceless. You are teaching others how music, a language shared internationally and that has no boundaries, limits or walls, is open to people of all generations, nations, cultures. Canadian Railroad Trilogy would be my vote for next one. The best version I think would be off Gord's Gold (one of my 10 desert island albums) He re-recorded songs for it and it's got the best instrumentation.
It'll make you want to go buy a 12 string guitar.

What a pure talent and an icon, from our neighbors to the north, Canada 🇨🇦 July 29th of 2020 a documentary came out titled " IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND" focusing on the music, life and career of Gordon Lightfoot with a lineup of friends helping out like, Geddy Lee, Randy Bachman, Anne Murray, Neil Young, Burton Cummings and of course Gordon himself, along with many more honoring this legend. This is something I gotta see. 3 other classic songs by Gordon are Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Sundown and Carefree Highway.

There are a few songs I can't listen to without crying, this is one of them. Another is Oh, Sweet Nuthin' by Velvet Underground. My favorite version of it was done by The Black Crows. The Rolling Stones have songs that make me cry, like Angie, Wild Horses and Time Waits for No One.
Been a Gordon Lightfoot fan fovever. You can hear why.
