That thing is an aux cable. Great reaction, as always. This concert was a free one, given as a thank-you for a fan-led campaign that made Killing in the Name the Christmas #1, beating out the schmaltzy ballad from an X-Factor winner.
Yep it's his guitar cable. So he's pulling it out of his guitar, using the connection with his hand to make what is essentially static, feeding it through his pedal board, and using a tremolo pedal that changes pitch the manipulate the sound. Tom Morello is a genius man

This was a free concert, 40k tickets. There is footage on YT of people rushing the barricades so it was actually 70-80k! This whole concert is on YT. Their concert (Battle of Mexico City) is lit…I have the dvd. Some of their live stuff is amazing, some of it has bad sound quality, that’s how it goes with most live stuff from the 90s. The human body has electricity so he's using the cable to channel that charge while using a whammy pedal to add effects to it. It's a weird trick but it works.

as live performances go, that was a good, accurate rep of the studio version.....i know you get tons of ratm suggestions, but their cover of afrika bambaaataa's "rennegades of funk" is fun, funky, and a respectfully cool nod to music history all in one sweet little jam, orig vid suggested, too...................jus sayin.....................much love, many props

Yes, listen to the studio version! Also, highly recommend you do any RATM reaction video with the lyrics. Even now, decades after first starting to listen to Rage, I’m picking up on new interpretations.

Notice when Tom is touching his guitar cable to his palm he is also stepping on his wah peddle... what you are hearing is static shaped by a wah pedal.
Tom Morello, the lead guitarist playing with one hand. He is a Harvard graduate.
"What is that called?" It's just the end of the guitar cable that plugs into the guitar. He has a wah pedal that he's standing on to make some of the sounds, then he touches the end of the cable to complete the circuit. By doing so, he creates a noise shift. And the wah pedal makes it sing.

I saw Rage Against the Machine in 2008 in Minneapolis... cops everywhere because the RNC convention was in St. Paul a short while away... They called the concert 'The Battle of Minneapolis'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘One of the BEST concerts I have EVER been to!
Tom Morello played the solo on testify w/ his guitar chord which produced static on his palm... usually it just makes this 'white noise' on the amp... but Morello was able to manipulate it (which is true genius!)
I got to experience Prophets of Rage live in 2016 in Virginia - the band was Tom Morello (guitar), Timmy C (bass) and Brad Wilk (drums) of Rage Against the Machine... w/ rappers Chuck D (Public Enemy) and B-Real (Cypress Hill) and DJ Lord of Public Enemy... They did a lot of RATM songs and some of their groups' jams live. Freakin' incredible experience!!!
The sound he makes with his hand and the wire you see is just the guitar aux cable. That wire is the feedback to the guitar amps. You pull it out of the electric guitar and touch your bare skin with it. Your body has electricity in it. I will produce the noise you hear. He also has a guitar effect added to it called a phaser and maybe a flanger. it works well with the vibe of the song and sounds cool but its dead ass simple.
Battle for Mexico City was nuts live performance. Highly recommend.
