Budget Interior Transformation! 1992 Chevrolet Silverado! OBS Upgrades!

  • After driving this regular cab shortbed for a few months I've identified some issues that need to be resolve. The main thing is the interior is absolutely disgusting! Also the doors rattle and the wind noise is annoying as all get out. I've also wanted to update the exterior mirrors, diagnose the HVAC and address some leaks. I really like this pickup so I hate to part with it but if someone were to fork out $9500 I'd let it go. As always, thanks for watching!

If you ruled out that you do not have a heater core leak I can promise you the source of your wet carpet is from a condensation drain hose under the HVAC system inside that goes through the firewall that over the years can get covered and clogged from accumulating leaves and debris from the cowling. Once it gets clogged the condensation will roll backwards into the passenger side floorboard underneath the carpet which if not discovered early enough will end up soaking into the soundproofing causing mold and moldy smell. Which is usually the first indication unless someone happens to feel the super soaked carpet, unrecognized and if it doesn't get dealt with right away it will definitely eventually rust out the floorboard. To clear the drain hose out it's not good enough just to try to do it from under the hood you have to be patient take some time and remove the blower fan and take a shop vac with a flexible hose and get in there and vacuum out all the leaves and debris, then flush out it out with some soapy water and degreaser from the inside out through the firewall until it runs clear then take your leaf blower and blow all the water out until it's dry and then replace your blower fan. The little tiny rubber hose is very hard to see it's just below the AC dryer canister under the hood in the very bottom and goes through the firewall.

I'm sure it's mentioned somewhere else in the 2900+ existing comments, but the column shifter has a return spring in it that was used in just about every column-shifted GM vehicle made from about the mid 80s - mid 90s. They are mounted inside the column against the shifter and often break. I just had to put a replacement in my 1994 G20 van. Pop out the pin that holds in the shifter lever and it's right there. Can be removed with a pick. No column removal or disassembly needed. Like $10 on ebay for a new one, or pennies on the dollar at your local salvage yard. I took mine from an early 90s Buick something-or-other. Kind of annoying to put in, but not too bad and worth it.

I agree..the '94-'98 grill looks better than the '88-'93 in the Chevy..on the GMC, however, I think the opposite is true..the '88-'93 GMC grill looks better than the '94-'98 GMC grill..I have an '89 Chevy, a '90 Chevy, a '91 GMC, and a '98 Suburban, and to me the '91 GMC grill looks much better on the truck than the '89 and '90 Chevy..I also think the original('88-'93) Chevy grill was designed to be used with the quad sealed beam headlights..I think my '89 with the sealed beams looks better than the '90 with the plastic headlights..IMHO, the one-piece plastic headlights and the '88-'93 grill used together gives it to much of a "flat" appearance...the '98 Suburban has the newer style grill, and it looks better with the plastic headlights..I'm not going to swap any of the grills, though, as I don't like "mix and match" parts swapping between year models..rather leave them the way they were created... :)

Another option for that carpet that I do to all my vehicles is Tuff Stuff upholstery cleaner and a round brush attachment for your drill. Soak it with the Tuff stuff for 10 mins or so then use the drill brush and 9 out of 10 times any drink based and even some grease based stains go away. Then after the carpet is dry and stiff feeling run that drill brush one more time and the carpet softens up almost like when new. all in all it only takes an extra 15-20 mins over what you did. Just a different option I do. works for me for what it's worth. Like the channel keep up the good content.

+1 for the headlight replacement but if you’re bored sometime I’ve brought several sets back in the same shape. Scotch bright and some scuff stuff (I think it’s made by presta comes in a little white tub) then clear them. Look like new for 30 mins worth of work or so. Pretty budget friendly

      if you do that,
      add a uv protectant ,
as the sctochbrite/cutting compound removes the top layer of plastic and it's factory uv protectant coating
making it turn yellow again.... fast

@@alt7488 have a set that’s been on a truck for 5 years now that lives outside in the weather no garage no awning. Just sunlight.. Still look as good as the day they were cleared. Zero yellowing. Just use a good automotive clear not some 2$ rattle can.

Much improved!! Great job on the interior clean up. A time consuming and often tedious chore, but also very satisfying and worthwhile investment. I think I caught Duff giving you the sideways "stink eye" a few times. Must not have been happy about how long it took to get a ride this week. Or maybe because you took out the seat again, maybe both who knows. He is a handsome fella after his spa day!! Thanks for keeping us entertained again this week.

I have a 2002 GMC Yukon Denali that had regular halogen headlights. I hated them so much, especially driving at night. I could barely see anything with them. Sometimes I'd be scared to drive at night. Especially in areas where there wasn't many street lights to light up my way. So eventually I purchased some "inexpensive" LED bulbs & put them in. So far I love them, they work & look amazing. They also made the truck look "more modern". Thankfully the Denali variant of the Yukon comes with Projector headlight housings from the factory, so LEDs & HIDs work perfectly in them. Where as with vehicles that have regular reflector housings that scatter the lights & blind oncoming traffic. It's extremely annoying. But anyway, before I purchased those LED lights I was debating on LEDs or HIDs. But I've always had bad experiences with HIDs. Having to deal with an annoying ballast or modifying something is not my forte lol. I just wanted something that was "plug & play" & i found LEDs to be perfect. also the color that I got imo was the best output option. They're not blue to the point that they start looking like purple (I find those lights useless because they look so dim imo) but they're far from looking "yellow" I find that yellowish light output color to look archaic. I think the color I chose looks more modern & luxurious. I see that color on more expensive vehicles. For example if you notice the color that the new Toyota Corollas have, they're way to blue. They almost start to look purple in certain angles lol. No hate, but that's just not my taste. Also like I said, thankfully the Denali comes with Projector headlights from the factory so I didn't have to mess with the actual housing, because I do not like aftermarket headlights either. Some look ugly af. Same thing with tail lights. I've seen some really ugly LED tail lights. I upgraded my truck to some LED tail lights that look more factory-ish & I really like them. They're all red & have a red LED light bar running through them sort of like the newer model GM trucks. Before it had some aftermarket taillights that were see through plastic. I guess it was trying to look like the 2007-2014 GMC Denali (which looks good on those models) but I just didn't like them on my year model. That was all the craze back in the early 2000s to like late 2010 lol. Everyone wanted to have those see through taillights. Some companies even started putting them on their cars for example the Nissan Altimas have those See through tail lights. The Lexus IS models also used those type of tail lights. Thankfully that trend died out lol. I never really liked it tbh

Now you know why I love my 96 extended cab even though she's a total Farm rust-bucket because the last owner really didn't care about it and he was a farmer he did do all the maintenance stuff which was very important but even he didn't rinse out any of the body after he used it. One thing for sure those Silverados are drivers I have the big sport mirrors electric on my side and they do provide for electric on the right but mine doesn't have that one, just a manual one. I did start buying some of the body panels so that's on the agenda after my 2000 k2500 gets done. Anyhow congratulations 100k Karma Channel just keeps getting better and better

In terms of led bulbs, make sure you get just the two sided bulbs not the ones that are little leds all the way around cause those don’t have a beam pattern. I’ve had good luck with fahren brand since you can get a hi/low beam kit for about $70.

    • @kingjay239

I agree, I put in some "cheap" LED lights in my 2002 GMC Yukon Denali & They look & work great! Before I put in the LEDs it had regular Halogen lights & I could barely see at night. The street lights were a lot brighter that my headlights lol. It was pretty bad. Thankfully the LED lights improved my vision at night & even during rainy nights. Thankfully the Denali comes with factory "Projector headlight housings" so the LED lights aren't just being scattered & or blinding oncoming traffic. I see so many other vehicles with regular halogen reflector housings with LEDs or HIDs in them so when they're close to passing me head on the lights blind the heck out of me. It almost appears like they have their high beams on, but it's just their regular low beams. It's extremely annoying. Even worse when they have those bright ass light bars. Sometimes I feel like purposely crashing into them head on just to let them know that they're blinding the heck out of me lol, just jokinnnnngg. Also, I love the color that they put out. It's not really blue, but it's far from being that ugly yellow color that older cars have. Imo the color that I got is perfect. Looks pretty modern & improves night vision. I've had lights where they were useless because they were way too blue so the light output wasn't great at all. & then I had some where they looked extremely yellow, to the point that they looked old. Idk how to explain it. But anyway, when it comes to HIDs vs LEDs vs Regular Halogen lights. So far I've had the best experience with LEDs. & I've tried expensive HIDs. I find HIDs to be unreliable at times, also sometimes they aren't plug & play. You have to modify something & dealing with a "ballast" finding a good/safe place to put them where they wont move around or heat up to much. It was just annoying for me. The LEDs that I got were just Plug & Play. They worked right out the box. So far haven't had any issues with them (knock on wood lol)

last week, i traded the grill, headlights, marker lights, side lights, sport mirrors, front bumper, and an expanded steel mesh tailgate with a fifth wheel dip, off of my '94 1500 silverado, for a '98 s10 with a blown engine and a t-5 tranny, as a frame to sit under my '36 chevy truck cab, to a kid who hit a deer with his '93 1500 base model. the frame and 4x4 drive line from the '94 is going under a '54 chevy 5 window truck cab, so to me, the parts were basically just junk i had to get rid of. sometimes the universe just lines up and smiles down on a feller. edit; my interior is dark blue and for an extended cab, but you can paint the plastic to match yours if it would fit. the truck is a tiara motor coach conversion, and has some solid oak face plates on the dash, and door panels, and has an oak ceiling storage cubby with custom rope lights behind plastic panels, with a factory installed radar detector from '94 mounted in the switch panel. it has good vinyl sun visors, and the front 60/40 reclining back leather seat has the tmc logo stitched into the headrests and has a flip down center arm rest/back rest. the driver's side seat cushion has some issues, but is pretty still pretty comfy. they're yours if you pay the shipping, or you can take a roady to northern indiana and pick it all up. if you're interested i can email you some pics. the frame and suspension, engine and drive line, fuel system, brake system, radiator, heater box and controls, pedal assembly, steering column, and wiring harness are the only parts i wanna keep. basically, all of the bits to turn the '54 cab into a real truck. i even have a pallet of brand new rubber bed mats, and i'll throw in couple as a bonus.
