Nonverbal reading: how to test reading skills when a child is nonverbal

  • This is one of several methods I use when I'm testing a child's reading ability. I first tell her the sentence (on a topic she relates to and loves) and then call out each word for her to select. If the child is fluent in signing, she can sign the finished sentence, or as in this video, simply point to the work she's already accomplished.
