Praying Mantis Basic Care - Part 1: What do you do when they hatch?

- I should make it clear that this video applies to those of you who may have bought an already live praying mantis online. When a mantis is shipped to you, it may arrive at a few weeks of age and the same information will apply.
I also would like to stress that you cannot release non-native mantid species into the wild. If you buy an exotic species, understand that you should be prepared to care for it for its entire life.

Praying Mantis, a Garderners best friend. ♥ I found my first egg sack while also picking the first harvest from my blueberry bushes in my little backyard. I am so excite to see the egg sack. I knew we had them in the yard over the years but this is the first egg sack we have ever seen.

Yeah you’re right, in fact I haven’t even thought of that. Many times the natural alternative is healthier in some way.
@PablosProjects Carolina mantises (Stagomanis carolina) are native to the Americas but less readily available commercially as the Chinese variety (Tenodera sinensis). Both have been in the United States for so long that it doesn't really matter which variety you use if you're looking for effective chemical free pest control to help keep our planet healthy 😉
@@mattfisher1905 Yeah Chinese mantids are what generally comes up on eBay when you search for oothecas. I guess even though they aren’t native they’ve sort of become part of things

Very good video 💙 thank you. I usually catch a female end of season and hatch in the spring but I didn't have any luck last year so I needed to make sure I was gluing them the right direction because I don't have to pay attention normally. Thank you for showing a up close shot

So many cold blooded critters (I include reptiles & snakes in the critters category lol) have similar traits, like when my snake is about to shed, even before her eyes turn blue, she has no interest in food, so I always think a close relationship w/ ur critters is important cuz eventually u will know their patterns or schedule, & it's amazing cuz I'm sure furry only pet owners assume u can't have a bond like w/ non exotics, & I've found u absolutely can, it's just in a different way...I rescued a pregnant mantis in the fall who was in the middle of circling birds, she was gorgeous, she was probably pissed, scared & freaked out, but man she was pretty when she's mad 😂 I knew nothing about them, I knew I always liked them tho, I brought her home & put her in something comfortable where she laid her ooth...egg sac...on an ornamental tree knick knack, I of course immediately went into learn mode & read what was her upcoming fate 😢 but I was happy she left me a little part of her 😊 well how crazy that I found 3 more egg sacs a few weeks later out walking & took them home too, so now I'm learning all I can before they hatch 🤞 they have all been outside protected from everything but the cold since I've had them, the 3 I found on the ground outside I put on the same tree thing, held by those mini black rubber bands....it seems I have 2 different kinds of mantis, Chinese & European, so now I'm still learning to prep for when they hatch, I haven't figured out when that happens what the plan is, besides for feeding right away so they don't cannibalize each other, & since I have 2 different kinds, I'm not gonna keep the sacs together, anyhoo thanks for ur videso, I'm going to watch some more of them, I would love to show u the video I took of her after I shoo'd the birds away, she was amazing

What I do with fruit flies is put container in the fridge for 5 minutes to slow them down then tap into the mantis container

If hatching an ootheca, but only want to keep one, I read where it is acceptable to allow them to eat each other leaving stronger mantids to select one from. Also that it provides food before you get fruit flies. Is this true, or not a good practice? Great videos!!!!!
Admittedly, I’ve accidentally “tried” this. I didn’t have access to flies at the time and If you leave them long enough they’ll get hungry and begin to eat each other as you know.
I wouldn’t recommend it just because they are all the same size. At that age they aren’t likely to recognize the others as food when they’re that young even though they sometimes do it. It’s just preferable to have the food be smaller.

I found the ootheca of the Chinese mantis i was watching like a month or 2 ago and i brought it inside and thought it would hatch in the spring
I had it in a tank and was misting it every day and today they hatched
And its the beginning of winter...
My plan was to hatch them and get them to the 3rd instar and release them on the plants on my property in the spring and keep one to raise to adulthood
But now im kicking myself for being dumb and not keeping the ootheca cold and i dunno what to do
Any tips?

opinions on using calcium powder on flies to keep them from escaping 1. and 2. as reinforcement of their diet? i've wondered in the past if it was something important that could make my mantis have a better chance of surviving. it didn't seem to have an effect on them, only in helping keep the fruit flies from escaping. but i'm not entirely sure if this is healthy or not. they were also carolina mantis.
Great question. So I’ve never tried giving them calcium or heard of anyone use it on em. As far as I know it’s not harmful but there is no benefit I don’t think.
In regards to keeping the flies from escaping, I have heard that a very thin film of petroleum jelly along the top inch or so of the cup works really well. The reason I’d recommend this over using a powder is because the latter stays stuck to the fly and I’m not sure how that affects their ability to continue breeding. With the petroleum jelly however, it is such a thin layer that it only contacts their feet so that they can slip, and it doesn’t hinder breeding at all.

How many can you keep together? I found a chrysalis in my yard and I want to save them all. Can I have them in a big container and throw fruit flies in every so often? I guess I'm asking, what's the max I can have cared for without stressing them and causing more harm than good? I want to get them healthy and strong enough to release them all. I don't intend to keep any.
When well fed, they don’t really eat each other at all, especially when they are babies. If you want to keep all of them make sure they have enough space. I would use one of those mesh butterfly habitats, because they’re pretty big, and if you do you could probably put them all in there for like a week or so. It’s unlikely that all will survive in the wild, in fact most die and only the strongest survive, but you’ll boost the chances of all of them if you do this.

@@PablosProjects so, only 2 emerged from my chrysalis. They are in great shape but I don't know why no more came out! I kept temp and humidity at acceptable ranges. And I don't think it looked like an already hatched chrysalis. I'm not sure what to do. Is it possible for hatching to be sporadic?
@@SJ-tb2wq Sometimes a few hatch like the day before. They are known as “scouts” so keep an eye on it, they might all hatch out of the ootheca at once a day later.
Can I feed them something else like ants, dead worm or something else I can find easier???
Ants might work, but their ability to see and hunt depends mostly on movement and shape so something that is dead won’t trigger that hunting instinct. In other words he’s not gonna eat anything dead. I bet he would go for some small ants

They are interested in mating around 3 weeks after becoming an adult. The rate at which they grow up depends on temperature and how much they are fed. And you can tell a few molts after hatching, so pretty young.
Simply put them outside in the wild, they’ll figure it out!
Some of the species available on the internet are not meant to be released because they arent native so this is a guide to help keep them alive as pets
