- Praying mantids are the perfect insect science experiment and pet. Education and school lessons are important, so watch our egg sac / ootheca hatch, and watch our nymph praying mantis grow up, eat bugs and get huge! can't wait for my huge praying mantis at the end of this experiment!

I appreciate the video. I found an egg case in my native flora class at school, and was wondering how to properly handle the situation. Answered all of my questions!
5:30 please, please don't kill me
I found one in my backyard and a mantis with it
thats super lucky
It’s FrEsH
Me too! What should I do? I want to watch it hatch but she is hanging upside right by it
@@JeanettePupko I don't really know. My brother took care of them as he loves mantises, spiders, etc.
In my house i found one but i didn't know it so i searched up
Same here
I got a praying mantis a few weeks ago and today when I went to feed her after school.... I SEE AN EGG SACK! This will be my first time ever hatching these things so this video really helped! They were laid in my room, which is always the same temperature so I assume it’s safe, but I am still researching so that I can see everyone’s perspective on raising nymphs, to see what I can do if something doesn’t work or just to try a different technique. This helped a lot! I am honestly stressed about it so I can’t explain how released I am right now.
Same I came home and u was like oh...oh......oh......OOOOOOHHHHHH
they wont hatch unless you have her mated with a male.
I seen a praying mantis eat a hummingbird
@@b.a.m.boyaskman6702I seen a praying mantis eat a puppy🥺
I found two of these in my yard and am so glad I found your video! Thank you!
I can understand where Blathers got his fear of insects from.
I can't believe I had to scroll down this far to find this comment.
Thank u. Very detailed. I myself brought in my plants and found two large sacs on the same plant. So I guess bc it’s freezing outside I should put them in a paper sack with twig into fridge.
I am plagued with soil gnats every fall/spring in my chameleons enclosures so I breed mantids as pest control/ feeders, I hang egg cases in each of my enclosures they fatten up fairly quickly and are a excellent food source for my chams. I've only had a few reach 3/4 inches but they disappear quickly due to the hungry lizards. I breed the survivor's in hopes of making a breed of super mantid lol. I have one very observant male veiled chameleon that sees the egg sack and charges toward it chomping the unhached sack.
I liked the vid, my mom hatched some praying mantises a few years back and now they find the cocoons every year in the fall and protect them until they hatch in spring and then watch em hatch, usually the first or second week of June in Michigan..
This year she found a freshly laid egg case on a 3 foot long 3 inch thick stick laying in the grass that had fallen off a black walnut tree.
She picked it up thinking it might be too moist directly on the ground and leaned it against the house and was going to put it somewhere safe but when she walked away for a few minutes and came back to get it, a bird was standing on the stick pecking the crap out of it and pulled the egg case apart! :(
We found a few more so it's okay, but that one was a nice big one, hope the bird was satisfied with his meal lol.
There's a really small one stuck to the outside wall of the shed and she wants to take a razor blade and slice/gently scrape it off the wall but doesn't want to damage it, anyone think that would hurt it?
Thank you so much for this information this was a great video oh yeah I'm getting into praying mantises but I'm using them as pest control for my garden and my little farm thank you again for taking the time to inform me good info
You don't understand how much this helped me thank you :D
I keep the exotic ones. Right now I have a Ghost Mantis, Orchid Mantis, and a Giant Asian Mantis. They are just as easy as the regular ones we have in the US. :) You just can not release them into the wild.
Dj Minecart, you are wrong, can be released in the Southern part of US
They would become invasive so you can not.
We have them all over our yard here in Nebraska & have gotten to see them hatching a couple of times. I have never seen anything grow sooooo fast!!
I just found a Praying Mantis sack and since I am home schooling my Son it is going to be used for fun and to let some go wherever we will be in the U.S. at the time.
I love when you describe things with your hands because you can't think of a word. I do that too lol. A lot!
Thanks for the information! I can't wait for mine to hatch!
I ordered a packet of 2 eggs and this helped now my garden is nice and healthy.
Thanks for the help
Walked outside and saw a praying mantis that I had seen mating a couple weeks ago. It was laying this frothy substance under a leaf, so now I know
Thanks for all the info to get me started! I'm excited! The egg cases are on their way and flightless fruit flies for food. :)
Im here cause my
mantis is a mother
Edit: my mantis just passed away 😭😭😭
Sorry for your loss!
Lmao
rip
Nooooo
That's so sad, my mantis was laying an egg sack but then the crickets in her habitat ate her and her eggs. I got to wake up to that, knowing that it was ALL my fault. Later I had a dream that she was still alive and I told her I was so sorry.
I am so glad I watched this video. I was about to buy 10 ootheca, that would've been insane!
Lol you would have thousands, but did you buy 1 or 2 and hos did it go?
We were bringing groceries into the house about six weeks ago, and we had the door propped open. All of the sudden my 8 Yr. Old son said "Dad what is that thing?" A large praying Mantis had come in through the door. I picked it up, and it crawled up on top of my shoulder and stayed right there. After my Son marveled over it for a hour, I told him we had to take it back out and let it go. I picked it up and took it outside. It would not leave my hand. I set it down and it flew back up and landed on me several times. We ended up keeping it. I feed it crickets and meal worms. I water it with an eye dropper. We have had it for 6 weeks now, and all of the sudden there was this funny foamy looking thing in the pen yesterday morning. She laid her eggs!! With the information from this video, I am going to place the ootheca in the back yard in a good safe spot and pray for them to hatch in the spring. Hopefully my Mantis will make it through the winter in captivity. She loves to just sit on my hand and clean her claws off. She is so cool. My Son thinks she is awesome too, and his friends at school can't believe the cool videos of her catching and eating crickets.
We just want to see them come out of the sack. And every video is of you taking up that space and you know it. Good job.
Love both ur science and btd channel love
Interesting vid - nicely done! So my fiance found a mantid, and we kept it. This thing is way too attached to us - she hates her aquarium - she only wants to be with us.
Today, she laid an egg pod. I watched the video, but am unsure if I should keep the pod in the refrigerator for the entire winter? How long do they take to hatch? Isn't the fridge too cold? I'm guessing my temp is about 42 - 45 F. I live in Penna., so I know the outdoors is much colder.
Also, will the Mom die, now that she's laid her pod? This morning, she would not move at all. Once the eggs were laid, she's quite active - although she is very "clingy" to people. Is it ok to separate her from the eggs?
Thanks!
Hey please update. I had a similar experience and I have an egg that I am confused about.
Thanks! Great watch.
I just bought three! This is helpful
My big mama is currently laying her eggs now. I'm so excited!
Thank you this was really helpful
I raised some from eggs this year and it was so interesting, today I counted 7 egg sacks in one area here. I had no problems with the striped beetles eating any of my flowers. You can buy them ahead of time just keep them in the fridge
I found this odd case on a bush the other day. Cut it off a bush cause I didn’t have a phone or book with me too look it up. An was psyched to see they were mantids! But now I feel it’s my duty to take care of them cause I messed up where they were laid😅 this is very useful information! I will let some go in my garden for sure!
Update? 🤠
Sniggity Snack they had all hatched! Probably close to 300 and I was able to sprinkle them in my yard and in the compost with lots of fruit flies the hunted! I had just kept my eyes Pom outdoor temperatures and they hatched just fine!!! Totally want to do it again next year if possible!
Thanks for the reupload with better audio xD
I'm a florist and found one in a shipment and now I'm trying to hatch these bad boys. Thank you!
I found one outside and I was wondering if I could just leave it outside in like a container not completely sealed but sealed enough so that other bugs when you come in like eat it and stuff
I can see your shyness, I'm shy to, I don't talk to any of my classmates and I'm 15 and I love your videos haha
and your smile 😆
eyo same, at school i dont talk to anybody at all, but at home i talk non-stop to my family
The reason I’m watching this video is because I found a praying mantis outside, and I got a small aquarium for it . filled it with sticks and leaves , and Loose coconut fiber. A week later, it formed a little coon thing. I looked it up and figure out that she laid eggs. So now I’m trying to figure out how to keep her and the babies alive. What is the next step ?
He's quite endearing.
How long do I wait till they hatch I brought them in Sometime April
My mantis just laid its eggs. Right now it's in the middle of fall for me. I'm keeping them in my room at a temperature of about 70⁰F. Should I take the eggs and put them in the refrigerator, keeping them on the stick? And also for how long should I keep them in there for?
I found one today. I'd like to keep it and watch it hatch. How long will it take to hatch?
You guys are so lucky, we don't have mantis in the UK 😢
Thank you.
Wait, people are actually selling these! The only reason I clicked this video was because I just went outside and found 8 of them in My Bushes around my house!
I found one while trimming my river oak tree today, I will keep them in a ventilated qt container with a damp paper towel. should I put the branch in my fridge? I dont know if they have hatched out yet but the sack looks intact. please advise. thank you. great video.
6:55 listen for his internal vomit
🤮
How does it feel? You just saved about 200 baby's. I found one outside on a piece of bark it was on the ground. I took some wire and put it thru the back and hung it on the jar with holes on the lid. Thank you so much! I'm so excited!!!!
You sir.. are “Times sexiest man of the year”
Thks for sharing!
My daughter was capturing lantern flies off of a tree with a water bottle. The people that lived there had the sticky trap wrapped around the tree since there were so many. Luckily my daughter noticed a praying mantis that was stuck on the trap. She saved her & brought her to me. I wet a paper towel and let her drink from it. I offered her a lantern fly as a snack. Since her legs were a little messed up from the trap, I decided to keep her overnight & make sure she was able to go back into the wild. I never took care of one before so I wanted her to survive. She stayed on my arm/shoulder the whole time up until I had to go to sleep. She kept wiggling her butt & at first I didn’t even know what it was that was coming out.. she was trying to lay her egg sack on my sweater right before bed. I thought it was poop. She didn’t want to get off of me which I why I ended up putting her on black shorts similar to the zip up hoodie I had on, and by the morning I looked at where I left her & she just finished laying her egg sac. I didn’t even know until someone on Facebook told me she was pregnant on a photo I posted. Then I put it together like wow that wasn’t poop. 😮 That morning she seemed ok enough that she would be able to hold onto a tree so I put her on a nice big one in a good area for her to survive. She went up the tree & I never saw her again. 🥲 What a cool experience. Now I’m going to try to hatch these babies!
yes it feels great to live in a tropical area oh wait
i cant even leave at daytime the sun is too hot nvm
I recently bought 2 egg sacks from Amazon and should be getting them by next weekend, would it be possible to hatch them early as long as there is a heat source for them?
I bought some on amazon and have no idea how to use them. Thank you!
Are the egg sacs waterproof?
One of the first ways to hang them that I was taught is to sew a thread through it, close to the surface.
Catch a mantis laying eggs on my porch last night. Excited for them to hatch!
When setting up a Mantid "terrarium", do you recommend giving the egg sacs a wee bit of a misty spray with a water bottle (every day or every other day) or is it best not to spray any type of mist and to just let them alone until the nymphs emerge from the egg sac? Thanking you in advance for your response!
Generally you can keep the ootheca at the same temperture and humidity as the adult animals themselfs.
So depending on the type of Mantid you will need to keep the Humidity high enough with misting.
I have four praying mantis eggs that did not hatch over the Summer, I'm guessing it's because the air conditioner kept it too cool inside the house. It is now November and I have the heater on all the time, will they finally hatch? Or will they never hatch now? They are stored in plastic containers with air slits and when I remember, I had a small enough of water at the bottom for humidity. I'm scared they somehow could become duds if that's a thing.
I brought in a mantis a few weeks ago. She just laid a sac. We're going into winter here, shoukd I take the sac out and put it into the fridge for the next 6 months?
I know it's a little late. Like buy a couple of years but what happens if I'm raising them in a controlled environment speaking from a hobbyist point of view.
Thanks 🙏🏽
question I got 2 egg cases in a small jar from a flower shop today in May did they hatch already
Hi, lastly my ghost mantis(phyllocrania paradoxa) have laid an ootheca and I am super excited, I read a lot about hatching ootheca and people write that it will hatch in spring, so in about 5 months. On the other hand people write that it will take about 4-6 weeks after the mantis made an ootheca so what I have to do? Do I have to put it in some cold temperatures around 10-13 degrees and wait until March and then raise the temperature up to hatch in April? Or just put the ootheca in box in appropriate temperature - 25 degrees and wait those few weeks?
So I found that my lovely garden mantis has layeyed her oothica on the top part of my new glass patio table. It obviously didn't stick so I dont know how I should safely hang it upside down since the bottom is flat. (It's a carolina mantis.)
Hey can u let me know what should i do just took out of fridge do i wait til they come to a certain temp and just hang them in my yard to hatch ty any info will help🖤
I caught a mantis yesterday and its laying a sac right now...this is the first time I've ever caught one and now I'm about to have 100s...
A pressing mantis left her egg sack in my bamboo windchime but it's been raining lately and mold started growing on the windchime. Should I try to move the sack to somewhere dry?
depends on the breed but the ones in CT can or should be frozen alk winter tgen hatch in spring
My mantis laid an egg sack and it’s stuck to the top of the cage interlaced within the screen top . Should I still put them in a fridge or leave them be ?
I found 5 egg cases on bushes around my house.I would just let them hatch in the spring outside but I have seen birds find the egg cases and eat the babies while they are hatching. How should I handle that ?
I like how u keep on saying praying matti....
CrazykidFTW Help mantids*
Lol it means multiple praying mantis :D
So I found what I believe to be a European mantis freezing on the concrete in south Dakota 5 days ago. I brought it to Wisconsin for a pet and It ended up laying a egg sac today. I have not idea if it is a fertilized egg and kinda wanted to see if it would hatch. Problem is that I'm not looking to keep them all in separate containers for the winter. I was wondering if there is a time limit on how long they can be refrigerated for? And what would you think the probability of it having fertile eggs would be?
How do you know if the egg case is dead ? My mantis Laid her egg case about a month ago and it went from bright green to brown then today it detached from the top of her enclosure when I was cleaning it. I've been looking all over the internet and even candles it but I'm not sure if there are any nymphs in there
My sacs came in 2 "prescription like" bottles. No air holes!! Should I take them out and put into a Tupperware container with air holes?
Edit....I took them out and added air holes to plastic container.
I need help with my praying mantis!!! She just laid eggs.. she's been in a little aquarium in my house for about 5 months. It is winter time and I do not want them to die. What should I do
i have a egg sac but it is in a tank at the top and i can not get it off to put it where it has to be how so i get it off
What if I accidently just found it in my house plant? Should I put them in the fridge now? Its already halfway through winter
There is a giant one on my porch. I went to examine it and hundreds of angry stinging insects flew out. Were the mantids raising them for food?
Found a praying mantis egg case hanging by a few threads on a leaf that fell from a tree or got blown into my flower bed from the summer. I would love to see it survive and hatch but not sure what to do with it...🤷♀️ It occ. “vibrates if I place it in the middle of my palm. Now I am just trying to leave it alone......Suggestions?
What should I do if my wild praying mantis laid them indoors on a fake plant? Should I cut the plant and move them outside or just leave them?
I have a locust/grasshopper issue in my garden. Would praying mantises fix this?
I had a PRAYING Mantis lay her eggs today in my room... She road on my back for 8 hours....I thought she was gone . I kept putting her on my tomato plants..
She kept jumping on me so I took her inside my room..... SHE looked pregnant....
It's cool... IT'S SEPTEMBER,FALL,
WHAT DO I DO WITH HER AND THIS BIG EGG SACK.. 9/26/2020
So i have a female mantis living in my garden and i live in Maine. I'm worried that with the temps getting cooler at night that she might die before laying her eggs. I'm also worried that if i bring her inside that the stress will be so much that she won't lay her eggs either! She's not the friendliest mantis we've had in our yard this summer. She Seems shy and jumpy. Any suggestions? I've been feeding her flys today and yes she's loving the food, just not the attention.... Hoping someone has some insight
I live in south america, the winter is not so cold here, it's even hot some days, do I still need to keep them cool if I find an ooth during fall?
I am hoping you can help me. We had a female that we brought in and she laid an egg case. The problem is that she laid it hanging from the top of the aquarium - it has one of those hard metal mesh lids. So the top is imbeded in the mesh. Will I damage it if I remove it? I want to winter it over by putting in the fridge as you explained in your video.
How late can they hatch? I bought some Chinese Mantis eggs and I want to raise them from birth, but I might be going on a long trip in a few months, so I don't want them to hatch until I get back. I believe they were laid last fall. Will they still hatch if I take them out of the refrigerator in November? Freezing isn't relevant, since I plan to hatch them and raise them inside.
What do you hatch them in if they are inside? I have heard they are tiny and will get out of any holes
Wow!! Awesome camera Chris! (Sorry if its Cris and not Chris)
One of mine didn't come with a stick but one did but I didn't see a hole on the none stick one
Hey my kid found two praying mantis has one male one female they bread and lay two different egg sacs and I was just wondering where I need to go to get food for them when they do hatch there currently in my refrigerator and I just want to make sure I am prepared for them when I do want them to hatch for food for them and I just don't know where to go for that
You mentioned Josh's Frogs. There is a location in Owosso, MI too.
Any help for me! We have only had one Mantis hatch? Is this normal? Sometimes do some hatch sooner than others? In the videos I have seen they just keep coming.
Hey, our mantis laid an egg case about three weeks ago. We live in Ontario, Canada where it’s cold out now. What should we do with the babies when they hatch?
good vid thank you
I had two praying mantises on the screen to my carport. The male has left or been eaten (not sure) but the female just laid eggs on my screen. It's been really cold here in Ohio, and we are supposedto have a really cold winter. How can I make sure these babies hatch? Once hatched how can I help them survive winter?
I see for rarer species that you can get adults/ nymphs and pairs of adults to breed, but not really any ootheca for them. Any idea how i can find an "iridenscent bark mantis" ootheca???? :/ those are frickin adorkable!
I didn’t know I had to mist the container for the eggs. I bought them last Thursday? Do you think it’s been too long now :(
found a mantis and it layed a ootheca in its indoor home and its currently october 15th so im going to have to care for them all year and a half
do you keep the wet paper towel inside while your are keeping it in the fridge?
is it normal for a few to pop out and not a whole bunch of them at one time?
very cool
