I forget who his host family was, but they got him quite a few American clothes but you could still see him wearing obviously Soviet era shirts and pants on occasion. He came from a nation where his parents might be able to buy a little Yugo-like car after waiting on a list for over a decade, and now was at a high school where some of the kids from "the richest suburb nearby" (one of four or five suburbs that fed into same high school) were given new cars for their 16th birthday. One jerk got a new Beamer... like an M5.

They’re always looking for new places to open up, so maybe they’ll get to you eventually. Sorry you don’t have one. The hot dog and soda is pretty darn good. They have a policy that the price will never change on that. And, of course, you can return anything, anytime, no questions asked. (Well, they will ask why you’re returning something, but most people say “I just didn’t want it”, and the return tag actually says “Didn’t want”.)

We live in an area of SoCal that has the largest population of Vietnamese outside of Vietnam. So when we took her to Costco we had her cover her eyes and a few Vietnamese wondered what was happening. They came with us as a group to see her reaction to her first trip to Costco. When we uncovered her eyes, she looked around and the tears started, then the tears started from the group that followed along started as they saw her reaction.

To answer your question, yes, this is exactly what it's like in America. Your reactions are priceless. It's so normal to us here that we're numb to it. The shopping carts have to be that size because you end up filling it without even realizing it. And the store thinks that it’s going to manipulate shoppers into putting more in there because you’re at a store where buying in bulk is king, so if you’re already there…you might as well get things that you don’t necessarily need right now, but you might in the future

It also means that when other people were attacking the regular stores like Target for their toilet paper when Covid first was announced (despite Covid NOT giving you diarrhea normally) some of us just kept slowly chipping away at the monster package of TP we got cheap at Costco long before there was a pandemic. By the time I was running low on that package, stores had begun to carry it again (after nearly a year of being out of stock on such a common item, it was completely insane) - and I never had to consider opening my "6-pack reserve package" left under a sink.

I know where you are coming from. Shipboard is much the same way, only with better hours. The Ship's Store you see videos of where sailors are walking around are found on aircraft carriers. Ours was a little window that you walked up to and made your choices off of an an 8.5X11 sheet taped to the bulkhead. Being able to specify "Foam" or "Gel" on the Shaving Cream was pretty much the most choice you would get.
After a few weeks out, going to a mini-mart "Chip Aisle" and having a choice that consisted of more than "Potato Chips - Regular/BBQ" was almost an emotional event. It's amazing that you can be thousands of miles from home and it's the small things that really start to matter.

Membership line isn't anywhere near as long and the crowds in the store are often significantly more crowded, but the video shows the typical merchandise, layout, experience, food, gasoline, etc. And yes, to answer their question, we do indeed have many Costco locations which also sell gasoline. As an American it's kinda funny seeing other people's first reactions to Costco. We have a Costco just outside of another town about 20 minutes from our place. Definitely an incredible shopping experience for sure. You guys looked like you had fun 🤗👍

@@load7791 It may seem like a positive experience at first. I worked for Costco for over 30 years. What I am talking about is the stupid behavior you are going to be engaging in if you develop a "relationship" with Costco. You have to remember this model came from America and Americans are idiots. So this model will have you drive to a huge parking lot. Spend 30-45 minutes looking for a parking spot. (BTW, NZ is not there yet, but after a few years, you will see the negative effect.) The store they were in was virtually empty by US standards. Spend another 30 minutes walking to the entrance of the store. Now, what are you here to buy? Where is your list? Do you need that amount of mayo or are you going to throw half of it out. Also, how long are you going to wander around the store? Is your time worth something? Wait in line 20 minutes to check out. Wait in line to get out of the building. What do you think is going to happen to that stuffed animal after a year? Are you confusing a retail store for Disneyland? Does any of this sound like normal behavior?

So, Costco's food court is famous for an item that I didn't see on your store's screen, but they might sell them in the freezer section. It's called a "Chicken Bake", and it's basically one of the best things ever. The brand here is called "Kirkland", it's basically their store-brand label. Glad you guys had fun!

The New Zealand countryside was breathtaking! Yes, we are very lucky to be in America - for those that don't know - America is always first to step up and provide aid to many, many countries. Going to Costco is an event for us, too - we always have two shopping carts and load up for several months of meals. They have some wild varieties and world-wide food and the hot dogs are the best !
