    It's funny because if you were to only look on social media you'd think Trent was a horrible player. Then you look at quotes from Dani Alves, Cafu, and Roberto Carlos (arguably the 3 greatest full-backs of the recent generations) about Trent, and it really puts things into perspective. Trent is quite literally generational, give respect where it's due.

      You'd come to notice he's not made a real mistake since that early game v Bournemouth and people still try to latch on to that, I think because he's a RB not playing RB in attack people get confused and just don't know where to put him which is silly

      That's because most people commenting on social media don't understand how football works from a tactical point of view so they can't really see that most of the comebacks Liverpool had this season came from tactical changes that gave Trent more freedom to influence the game with the latest example being the fa cup game against Arsenal.

    He coped well defensively without VVD, Gomez and Matip in the 2020/21 season.
    Stats showed he was being dribbled past less per 90 min in comparison to Walker, Trippier and James who everyone claims are better defenders.
    People act like Walker is perfect when I've seen him give away many penalties all due to rash challenges. The one against Palace in 2018/19 season sticks out for me and it's also the game where Andros Townsend scored an absolute screamer.

      This comment nails it. Trent constantly gets criticised for supposedly being very weak defensively when Reece James, who when fit is often branded as the most complete right back in the world, is nowhere near as good going forward and in all honesty, isn't that much better in defense. He's certainly a better defensive fullback than Trent but he's nothing extraordinary either. Kyle Walker is the best defensive fullback in the league and even then he's not perfect defensively speaking (just recently he had a horrible moment against Mitoma this season even though City ended up winning that game)
      When people were trying to justify Trent's admittedly bad form last season due to the lack of any midfield protection, the drop off in quality of Van Dijk that season and constant injuries to Liverpools backline, people dismissed those valid points and branded Trent a system player and without said system, he was absolutely useless
      If Trent is just a useless system player because he played poorly when the entire defense and midfield was falling apart and when the attack was in a transitional phase then what does that make Man City's defense who've been constantly conceding goals and dropping points whenever Rodri is out? By that same logic are Ruben Dias, John Stones and Ederson complete frauds since they're constantly protected by the best cdm in the world?

    I think it's also primarily because Trent doesn't operate within the realms of the fullback/right-back/invert/mesh that we've seen as the primary positions for the majority of the last 5-10 seasons. He's a special talent that takes the skills of passing of the likes of Beckham/Shweinsteiger/Xabi Alonso into a defensive position: almost a blend of multiple positions.
    SAF kinda did a preview of what it was to come when Beckham was the playmaker/drifter for Man United until he moved to Real Madrid, however the play style of football/understanding of football rally remained the same at the time. Klopp is taking what SAF did and is pushing it- as formations are starting to become more fluid and more dynamic, making the static formations slowly becoming obsolete.
    It's just we haven't seen it before in a defender that our fundamental knowledge of football is starting to show its age, and Klopp is fighting against that by making Liverpool so much more fluid this season, hence their current run of form. But, as a result, Trent's mistakes and flaws will be more highlighted to the basic principles of a right defender.

      We don’t have any elite players other than Harry Kane. This expectation of winning tournaments is simply delusional. We say the likes of Saka, Foden, Rice etc are elite, but the truth is they’re not. They aren’t world class.
      World class is Messi, Ronaldo etc. Other than Harry Kane, we have nobody who fits into that bracket.

    Trent is arguably the best passer in the EPL bar KDB and probably the most creative player England have (IMO), his defensive issues are often overblown for the sake of joking on Liverpool and he's definitely better in that regard this season anyway. Given how much his composure has improved and with the absolute dearth of creativity in Southgate's England sides I have no clue how he doesn't play - especially given that Trips and Walker are both in their mid-30's and James is made of glass.

But he is very clever and a good playmaker with great passing and shooting. Maybe he should try the role of TAA in Liverpool. Our national team plays horrible and that could be a new system, that surprise our opponents. Tuchel and Nagelsmann are great coaches and could copy that system. Btw... nice video 👍

    @tobaepebinuade5830 Před 4 měsíci +8

    Trent Alexander Arnold is one of the most divisive players in the premier league. On one hand you have a guy who’s a generational talent one of the best fullbacks we’ve ever seen who’s basically a midfielder playing as a right back with his excellent range of passing and very good crossing, he’s doing things that even guys like Dani Alves and Marcelo couldn’t do in terms of their passing range and the guy has also revolutionized the role of a modern day fullback. Meanwhile on the other hand, people see him as an overrated player, a player hyped up because of English bias and the only agenda that people push towards him as that he’s not a world class right back due to the fact that he can’t defend.
    Defensively he’s not bad but the thing is he can get exposed against pacy and tricky wingers and in big games that leaves Liverpool vulnerable from a defensive aspect of the game, but from an attacking perspective he’s as good as ever going forward and that makes him a player who’s simply too valuable to bench on any team. With the season that he’s having and how consistent he has been for Liverpool, I hope the praise Trent Alexander Arnold is getting much much louder than the criticism he got. A lot of people also believe that Liverpool aren’t playing him in his proper position and when watching him sometimes he can be a little one dimensional in his game, we’ll see if he’s a permanent midfielder or continues playing right back. As a right back on the field, he creates chances from anywhere and that’s an asset for any team and there’s always a debate on who’s the best fullback in the world and they have different strengths and weaknesses which is why sometimes it can be a silly debate and we have to remember that managers prioritize a lot when it comes to the type of fullback their team needs. Some go for more defensive ones like Kyle Walker Kieran Trippier Ben White and Reece James (when healthy), managers would want a creative fullback like Trent Alexander Arnold if their midfielders is all about tenacity energy and defensive cover. He’s not an overrated player and given his attacking output from the right back position for Liverpool, he can reach his potential even without being a very good defender as players have different qualities, strengths and weaknesses and I think we need to take that in consideration when discussing how good a fullback is.

      Really enjoyed reading this, I can't disagree with much of what you said. The point of English bias could be a factor, as English players are seem to be easily "overhyped" and the pressure and expectation gets to them. I think the problem is that he's been so good for so long that the standards of what is expected is also so high that when he's having a great season it appears just like a "normal" season for him.

    Elimination round, a goal down with minutes to go, make sure you leave your most creative and most dangerous passer on the bench; Southgate is a football genius.
    Actually, keeping Alexander-Arnold in midfield makes him a better defender, because he's closer to the action, closer to every ball that comes through the field. He's not a sprinter, so being closer puts him immediately in the way of would-be attackers.

  • @DenDave_
    @DenDave_ Před 4 měsíci

    As for Trent's defending, I think in some games it also is just the gameplan to not follow an attacker all the way to the backline. Cause if he does, and he stops the attack, the ball will either go out of play or he's in a terrible position to launch a counterattack. However, as was very clear in the Arsenal game, each time Martinelli cut inside Konate was there to sweep up the ball. And in some cases he delivered it to Trent, who was then in a better position to go forward. Trent is a playmaker at RB, he's in a better position to dictate the play when he has a bit of room to go forward and launch a pass, which he does not get if he follows wingers all the way to the backline.

    hey, a liverpool fan here. i think trent is not the ideal player at the right back, but he is not a defensive liability though..unlike many defenders in this world. his tackling is good, physicality is ok now, speed is also quite good. the thing he lacks in is def awareness, which again makes all the difference there is. but i'm so glad he plays under klopp as he becomes a difensive midfield player also covering the right side of the pitch mostly in our new system.
    so he is a vital player for us as he radiates winning mentality out of him always. i'm not sad that he doesn't get picked so often in national squad. i'm scared he might get injured from there and miss liverpool games. he is so valuable for us. i think a england midfield trio of declan rice and trent in defensive mid and jude bellingham in attacking mid will be devastating. but we'll never see that in reality as people doesn't value trent's quality that much

    Its a difference of systems. Trent works in the Liverpool setup because the way the team play is, to an extent, built around how he plays. The England national team's game isn't built to accommodate how he plays so naturally he wouldn't fit in as smoothly as he does. But this whole thing about how people disrespect his defending is maddening. He's not that bad defensively and hes in the team not just to defend, but also to support the attack.

    As a LFC fan, I don't get why other Liverpool fans are up in arms whenever Trent is caught out of position while defending or when he gets skinned in 1v1. He's playing 2 positions at the same time, ofc he's gonna be caught out of positions a few times and ofc he'll be out of legs in the later half of the game. That's part of the "high risk, high reward" strategy Klopp uses. You cannot have it all, if you want him to control the game centrally as well as be prime Cafu in terms of positioning and defending, that ain't gonna happen. You have to lose some to gain some.
    Also one thing I noticed over the years is fans of the other "Big 6" always prop up someone new to compare it to Trent and hilariously, its always Trent who comes out on top. First it was AWB (who's shit both offensively and defensively), then Reece James (made out of cheese at this point and if you look at his stats, he had his good years at Wigan)and now its Porro (who is still starting out and hasn't showed enough to be in the convo). The only other right back who's better than Trent is Walker coz he's the prototype of a traditional RB. If anything, Trent can be defined as a "quarterback" who controls the game from behind

Trent hasn't made a mistake since Bournemouth and they won that game! Even on the weekend the narrative was Martinelli skinned Trent (he did twice, post match of course we find out he'd done in knee before that) yet on the other side of the pitch Nunez absolutely roasted Ben White for the entire second half - nothing mentioned about that. As a manager Trent would be in my team at right back every single time, and a man who has won it all seems to think the same at Liverpool and that's what matters.

    If Trent was German, he'd be playing every match. He is somewhat the right-backs Thomas Müller. Simply created a new role in his position, we just haven't named that role yet. We Germans fancy intangible shit like that. For one, Trent is kind of a right-back version of a Segundo Volante. The front don't know where to go? Pass it back to Trent and he'll find room.
    AND second, he is a mentality beast! Even if he doesn't play for England because of the match plan or whatever, he should be in the squad for the dressing room atmosphere!
