- My wife decided she wanted a scooter. She picked out a 2024 Honda Metropolitan. I go over it in this video and take it for a ride.
*disclaimer for those with no understanding of humor: no animals were locked in the storage compartment during the filming of this video, nor were they transported in such fashion. The underseat compartment is not intended for live animals nor should it be used for transport of same.

I have a 2004 metro and i get so many compliments from people at traffic lights and passing by
This one gets a lot of attention. It's sharp looking.
I just bought a 2007...I love it for bopping around town doing errands and going to the gym✨🛵...
It doesn’t matter what you ride,
The wind is always the same❤
Interesting prospective but I dig it.
IMO its definitely a LOT better looking than the Chinese and Korean scooters out there.
It's a very good looking machine. Honda captured the essence of Italian styling, while making it uniquely Japanese.
Oh night and day.
My wife and I are thinking of getting a pair of these for travels around our small city in PA. 40mph is the highest speed limit on any of the roads we would travel. Seems perfect. Thanks for reviewing!
They are good for what they are good for. City use is a perfect application.
You make it look more fun than I remember a 50cc scooter is!
I do ride a (larger) Vespa sometimes, and agree that scooters are fun. I am also a biker, car driver, cyclist and pedestrian. I don't think we have to be just one thing on the road!
Enjoyed your video and the obvious enjoyment you had with that little scooter
One can find joy in anything. :)
This is one of the best scooter videos that I’ve watched. Nice to see you are wearing gloves. I’ve logged 100,000 kilometres 62,000 miles on scooters since 2006. I wore out Suzuki 650 Burgman at 60,000 Kilometres. I have a 250 Piaggio Beverly touring scooter with top and side boxes. It has 30,000 Kilometres of fun long rides. My Yamaha BWs/Zuma has 10,000 k on the odometer.
The Yamaha 49cc is my favourite ride. I’m selling the Piaggio. I want a Giorno or Ruckus to compliment my Yamaha BWs.
The slower you go the further you get.
My scooter experience says a big yes to everything that you’ve stated. Please keep up the great videos.
I’m your Far North neighbour in the boreal forest Precambrian Shield of Northern Saskatchewan Canada.
Thanks kindly and breathe easy
Love this video and the puppy in the storage ;-)
hah! I'm glad. :)
You had me cracking up when you said “ fury from other drivers!!😂😂😂
It’s funny because it’s true
It's 49 cc I'm in nc and I didn't need to get a license for it. Only had it for a little over a month and already adjusted the brakes and throttle so they're more responsive.
Nice. Indeed, brake adjustment was the first thing I did. I adjusted it in the parking lot at the dealer. Throttle I’ve left alone for now because I don’t want that to be too peppy because my wife is still learning
i think it's exciting
They are fun, that is certain
Hah, fun to see Lancaster on CZcams. I'm out in Exton. I've been thinking of getting something with two-wheels and this appealed to me for its looks and price, but that absence of giddyup is going to be too much. This was a good video, though, and thank you for it!
Thanks for watching. I’m glad it was helpful. They are fun and serviceable machines, but indeed, they aren’t for everyone.
Nice review
Thanks kindly
Great video! Very funny! I enjoyed the sarcasm, lol. It's nice that the metropolitan has that little storage compartment. I think you covered all the reasons why to get this type of scooter as well as reasons not too. It all depends on type of roads you want to ride on and what your expectations are. 👍
I am pleased that this video has been a success, and that you enjoyed it. A 50cc really is a truly niche choice, but definitely fun if you accept its limitations...and don't try to carry a dog under the seat. :D
@@honkerman74 haha! Yes, I got a chuckle out of that too!
Thanks!
my pleasure. :)
I have a 15 minute ride through town to work, and mine is the perfect solution. My car stays at home.
This is what they were made to do
How does this do up steep hills? Can it continue going up hill for long stretches?
It’s slow uphill. It will get you there, but it will take a while
Does DMV gave you an M1 or M2 in California if you pass the test? I also have this Honda Metropolitan
I am not in California. I know next to nothing about California motoring regulations. I’d recommend you go to the California dmv website or call them with your questions.
I have a 2023 Honda metropolitan scooter, in which I go everywhere with, I no longer have a car, a lot of times I go anywheres from 30 miles a day, all the way up to 100 miles a day, no problem, now my scooter cruises at 38 mph, even against the wind, no problem at all, but I only weigh 135 lb, maybe that's the reason why, plus where I live it's all flat, with no hill's, or mountains, would I buy this Honda metropolitan scooter again, absolutely yes, 100 percent.
The metropolitan is capable of speeds up to 40, and weight is definitely a factor. They are reliable though and while they don’t go fast, they will always arrive eventually
Are you in Lancaster? I just got a ruckus a couple months ago and these little scooters are so fun
Lancaster County, yes. Not in the city though. Small scoots are a blast indeed.
Hey man i live in hanover im looking to buy a metropolitan, where did you get yours?
Lancaster Honda has a blue one for sale, at least they did on Saturday.
How heavy and tall are you? Because the smaller the bike, the lower the power, the more that matters. I wish they made a Metropolitan with a 125, perhaps the one that is in the SuperCub. That would be an awesome alternative. They could make both. The Metropolitan and Metropolitan S or something.
BTW, I wish they still made and sold small capacity motorcycles here in the USA. Other parts of the world get them, but not here. I always was interested in the MZ RT125.
I am not a terribly heavy dude and I’m just about average height. The metro is a bit too small and light for a bigger engine than it has, though they did sell the Elite 110 here for a while. Yamaha had a 125cc Vino for a while, but it was bigger and heavier than the 50cc. The biggest hurdle is the American market, which is too focused on image to realize the value of small bikes and scooters. It’s changing slowly.
@@honkerman74 I really liked the style and design of the little Metropolitan. But I went with a 150 Vespa instead. One of the big problems in the US is the way our settlement patterns are. We almost always have to travel on higher speed roads and streets to get to anything in this country. Sure there are plenty of people that live in dense urban environments (which is what this bike is really for), but a huge number of Americans live in suburbs. Or the shops and colleges and other places we need to get to are separated by busy, high speed roads. It's not as much of problem is as many places in Europe (or Asia for that matter). Which is too bad, because I have medical problems that would have made a bike 100lbs lighter a godsend.
For the record, I am 5'8" tall and about 162lbs. Think I could have gotten 40mph on level ground?
It really depends on locale. If one lives in a city, especially a city where lane filtering is a legal option, they are ideal. For rural riding, concessions must be made and understanding the limitations of the machine is a must.
Can't find a rear bracket for mine .can't find the mirror thread spec .is it 8mm or 10mm
This I'm not sure of. If you contact your local Honda dealer, they will likely have that information.
@@honkerman74 did that they don't.
Love this video. I’m buying a 2002 metro that needs a little work and quite frankly I’m excited to have my first scoot. Well kind of my first scooter/moped. I’ve been building and selling 2 and 4 stroke motorized bicycles since 2017. Cheap transportation became a hobby that I absolutely love. Like you said “anything on two wheels is for me”
The one I’m buying has one simple issue.. bogging down and won’t reach top speed currently. But it’s all good I’ll fix 😎 and I’ll even slap on some upgrades and keep it reliable. Thanks again for the video, stay cool man.

It's always fun to get your hands dirty with these little bikes. They are heaps of fun.
scooters are now getting the respect they deserve in the citys now . bikers are always waveing at me saying hello . cars look out for me and I show the same courtesy to them . i dont like holding any one back .on the road so I ride far to the right to let them pass .
It depends where you are, but a lot of people want them for the fuel economy. The practicality is epic as well.
@@honkerman74 yes thats what i use mine for too their better for the city than a car .in my opion
Great video. I wanna get one. Im am 320 will this carry me? Im only gonna use it at the pits at the racetrack only going about 20 mph max.
Technically, that’s well over the limit of one of these, but I had a buddy about 6’3” and 350 who rode one of the old style metros and it was fine. I think he may have beefed the suspension up some.
@honkerman74 oh ok dang. Which one would you prefer? Nothing too bulky and heavy tho just something to get around the pits..
There’s always the Grom, or a monkey. Lots of big guys ride them. Might need some suspension adjustment too, but that’s going to be true of any small bike
@@honkerman74 thanks for your insight in going to check those out
Does this scooter have a kick starter besides the electric start?
Yes indeed. It's right there on the CVT.
Loved the video and humor! However, I would caution people about putting a dog in the storage area. It's not meant for pet of any kind. I just purchased a Vespa LVX 150, and I noticed warning stickers in the storage about no pets. I asked the sales guy about the warning stickers, and he said for legal reasons Vespa decided to warn people so that they wouldn't kill their fur-baby and then attempt to sue because they were not warned. It makes sense.
It’s obvious humor, Lucy was in the storage bin with the cover unlatched for only a few seconds, and never rode in it that way. It was just humor. If people aren’t intelligent enough to realize that locking an animal of any kind in a small space of that kind is detrimental to their well being, that is on them. I knew someone was likely to point out the obvious eventually. And yes, there are notices all over the thing about not using the storage space to tote live creatures. It was simple humor.
Very cool video. This looks like a scooter you can have a blast and alot of fun riding but you just don't want your friends to catch you riding it. If I remember correctly this is the same scooter that Kurt Angle tried to give The Undertaker as a gift on wwe's raw
I've never understood that mindset. Too many dudes with their fragile masculinity afraid to have a little fun because they might not look "manly" enough. One misses out on a lot when one is too concerned about the opinions of other people.
It's funny how weak men think that think they have to compensate with a big vehicle, real men ride what they want and don't care about what people think!
what is the top speed on flat surface?
Right about 38mph
Yeah, these aren't meant for rural areas. I have a 2023 Wolf Islander that works perfectly for the suburban/urban part of Greater New Haven, CT where I live, but I can't imagine using one in that area. It seems you're really out there too, we have some areas like that in the central and northern parts of the state.
I rode a 50 for five months. It was my first “bike” and I learned quickly that is was best in stop and go urban/suburban settings. Areas with lots of hills would become highly irritating very quickly.
❤
love how youre spreading the love
2:55 They’re also good for doing food deliveries as well
I'm sure. Not something I do, but I've seen it done.
Had two Metropolitans and they didn’t wobble and stopped well. The second newer one could do 42 mph.
I think you might have the wrong idea of what I mean by “wobbly.” It’s not an issue of anything loose in the vehicle’s structure, it’s a feature of the small wheels that makes a small scooter less stable than something with bigger wheels. They are by nature more twitchy than larger wheeled scooters and motorcycles.
Drums do work well enough on a small, light machine, and those fitted to the metro seem sufficient, but drums are never as effective as discs.
I'm 6'0. Would I fit on one of those?
Hard to say, the best way to know if a bike or scooter will fit your frame is to sit on it
I do, and I am 6'1"
I can't imagine doing a commute with that.
It depends where you are and the length of the commute. It’s perfect for mine, but then, mine is a mile and a half or so and the speed limit is 25 most of the way. For someone in a city such a machine is perfect.
As someone who just wants to ride slip on gravel roads I couldn’t complain
The low torque on something like the Metropolitan makes gravel roads less intimidating. Small wheels and low torque really help a lot.
Where is the spark plug
You have to remove the tub under the seat to get at it.
i dont like them hooks on it . i like the old hooks on the metro .i had a 2008 model good running bike
I think if I lived in an area where I did not own a car and my mode of transportation was a bus, I would much rather buy one of these and have the freedom to go where I wanted faster than the bus could get me there and for probably less money in gas.
That is a perfect scenario for these machines.
@@honkerman74 Yes I would say this is mostly a city machine, and if you lived is a densely populated city where parking is nearly impossible and car insurance rates are sky high and the bus system is slow to get you to your destination, then this scooter would be your #1 option and you would cherish this little scooter.
I found it too small and short for me-knees in the way-serious reduction in turning radius-built for midgets. I would have to use it for Rang back roads in Quebec.
To be fair, it was built by Japanese folks, who don't tend to be terribly tall on the average. As a 5'10" dude, I've found it's fine for me, but for someone of taller stature, I can see how it could be an issue.
@@honkerman74 I'm 5'10" too-I really find my legs in the way. I would want to sit on the back of the seat and have pegs off the floorboards. Spread my legs wide for a turn? I love scooters but not this one.
@@honkerman74 I also have freakishly long arms.
So...like a reverse T-rex?
@@honkerman74 I swear the wheelbase is too short for me! That or the bar is too low.
Like a Vespa but actually reliable
I think they look a bit better than the modern Vespa really.
I ride harleys and i love scooters. People are mean.
They can be, but I think the unkindness comes out of fear of looking less in the eyes of others. Many people are afraid to appear happy because they equate it with weakness.
I have a Metropolitan and a Ruckus. I love both bikes for they are.
According to Hondas website it’s 49cc
Well yes, the displacement is 49 cc (probably 49.5 or 49.9), but they are still called 50cc scooters. It’s the industry standard.
У меня такой мопед 2016 года) тоже видосы делаю)
it is a scooter, not a moped, but still, and excellent machine.
It's a 49.9cc engine, so it is less than 50ccs and you don't need a license in NC to drive it.
Different states, different rules.
You need a driver's license to operate this in Texas believe it or not. Nanny state.
Everyone be glad you don’t live in Minnesota. Here you need a drivers license with the motorcycle endorsement!! So I guess Minnesota looks at the Metropolitan the same as a Suzuki Hyabusa !! I think that the politicians should take it for a ride and then they might reconsider calling it a motorcycle. It says motorcycle right on my license plate.
New York is the same way from what I understand.
Riding across the country on a Ruckus? I'd rather sit in the dentist chair every day for a month.
You do you. There’s something to be said for taking the long way home as it were.
No power !! No can do!!
These machines are about convenience, not speed. Thankfully, most people who ride them aren’t interested in what other people think and ride them for the convenience they offer
That was stupid. Passing a bicycle in a non-passing zone. You're going to get killed on that thing.
You do know what a double yellow line is, don't you?
Well, the huge horsepower reserves of the metropolitan make the speed and acceleration intoxicating. I’ve even passed Amish buggies on it.
There was nothing coming on the other side when he passed. There is no risk of getting killed if nothing is coming.
there are electric bicycles that will do almost 30 mph without a license. seems like the laws for 49cc scooters are extremely outdated, as they can only reach top speeds of 35-40mph when stock.
It varies by jurisdiction. In Pennsylvania, top speed for e-bikes is 20 mph. It seems to me that it is the e-bike rules that are inconsistent with rules for other motorized vehicles. They are essentially an electric moped (mopeds are usually restricted to 25mph) and should be registered in the same way, but political expediency gives them a pass. There’s more to say, but not on a thumb-pad
I'm so in love with this 2024 Honda Metropolitan NCW50 scooter. 😍🛵
